My two supervisors, Elizabeth Butler Cullingford and Barbara Harlow, introduced me to much of the literature and many of the ideas that make up this project. Kamran Ali brought both academic rigor and a sense of humor to the defense as he pushed the manuscript beyond its boundaries. Moya Doherty – Curriculum Vitae In 1994 RTE, the Irish National Broadcaster, hosted the Eurovision Song Contest following Irish wins in the previous two years. Moya Doherty was asked to produce an exciting cultural experience for the interval performance during the show. From that decision the world phenomenon known as Riverdance was born. The first performance was produced by Moya Doherty. It featured Irish Dancing Champions Jean Butler and Michael Flatley, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Celtic choral group Anúna with a score written by Bill Whelan. It was so successful that later the same year the BBC commissioned a repeat performance of the act for the 1994 Royal Variety Show. Later that year Moya and her husband John McColgan and their production company, Abhann, created a full length version, “Riverdance – The Show”, which premiered in 1995. It became hugely popular, with tickets selling out for the whole run. Later that year the show started touring the UK and Europe. Its first appearance in the United States was in March 1996 - the start of an eight-week sell-out season at Radio City Music Hall, New York. Riverdance continued to grow in popularity and success, touring the world over, including the Far East and Australia. Since Riverdance began its full length performances, the show has… Played 10,000 performances Been seen live by over 22 million people in over 350 venues worldwide, throughout 40 countries across 4 continents Travelled 600,000 miles (or to the moon and back!) The Abbey Theatre invests in, nurtures and promotes Irish theatre artists. We do this by placing the writer and theatre-maker at the heart of all that we do, commissioning and producing exciting new work and creating discourse and debate on the political, cultural and social issues of the day. SMYTH, Pro- Vice-Chancellor, President, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, on 16 May 2003, on the occasion of the conferring of the Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on MOYA DOHERTY and JOHN McCOLGAN A Sheánsailéar, a mhuintir na hOllscoile agus a dhaoine uaisle, In the closing years of the eighteenth century the Belfast Harpist Festival provided the impetus for the collection and preservation of a musical tradition that was fast disappearing in a rapidly changing Ireland. Almost exactly one century later, in 1897, the first Gaelic League Céilí was held in London and from that event stemmed a process aimed at creating Irish dance as a distinctive style of cultural nationalism with an approved repertoire of steps, styles and costumes. A further century passed, and in 1994 there was born the phenomenon of Riverdance. As with its two predecessors it has come to be regarded as a pivotal point for the projection of group national culture. Like its predecessors, it is situated in the wider global context of its time. Declining folk traditions in the face of modernity lent impetus to the rescue mission of the eighteenth century Belfast Harpist Festival. A rising sense of nationalism, contextualised in the revivalist movement of late Victorian romanticism, may be discerned in the activities of the London-based Gaelic League. Similarly, the self-confident “can do-ism” of the emerging Celtic Tiger is clearly evident in the design and timing of Riverdance. Dispensing with the rigidities of the Canons of Irish dancing, tried and tested in parish hall feiseanna over generations, Riverdance projected itself as what the sociologist Barbara O’Connor has described as a hybrid, drawing inspiration from international dance movements and cultivating a deliberate global appeal. -

Estate Maps of County Limerick The following started life as a simple listing of estate maps of county Limerick, but has evolved to include sale catalogues, rentals etc. We are working on including all the names of tenants, lessees etc. and hope this will make it an important resource especially for those researching their family history. There are more maps yet to be found. If anybody using this list knows of other maps then I am happy to add them, providing a proper reference is given. If there is no link the map or rental can only be viewed at the relevant institution.
