I am doubly fortunate to leave graduate school with not only a Ph.D., but a partner. iv “Strangers in the House”: Twentieth Century Revisions of Irish Literary and Cultural Identity Publication No._____________ Colleen Anne Hynes, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2007 Co-Supervisors: Elizabeth Butler Cullingford, Barbara Harlow This thesis, Strangers in the House, illuminates how “strangers in the house”— unconventional women, Travellers, emigrants and immigrants—have made significant contributions to the evolving traditions of Irish literature and culture. I trace the literary and creative contributions of groups that were silenced during the early twentieth-century nation-building project to review the impact of the Irish Revival, from the politics of Arthur Griffith and Eamon de Valera to the writings of Yeats, Gregory and Synge, on the establishment of an “authentic” Irish identity. I draw on scholarship that establishes Ireland as a postcolonial nation, suggesting that contemporary identity is closely linked to the national, religious and gender expectations reinforced during the periods of colonialism and decolonization. My scholarship considers individuals who continue to be peripheral in the “reimagining” of what it means to be Irish in a post-Celtic Tiger, E.U. Bohlman) My dissertation analyzes cultural production at the Studio di Fonologia (SdF), an electronic music studio operated by Italian state media network Radiotelevisione Italiana (RAI) in Milan from 1955 to 1983. At the SdF, composers produced music and sound effects for radio dramas, television documentaries, stage and film operas, and musical works for concert audiences. Much research on the SdF centers on the art-music outputs of a select group of internationally prestigious Italian composers (namely Luciano Berio, Bruno Maderna, and Luigi Nono), offering limited windows into the social life, technological everyday, and collaborative discourse that characterized the institution during its nearly three decades of continuous operation. This preference reflects a larger trend within postwar electronic music histories to emphasize the production of a core group of intellectuals—mostly art-music composers—at a few key sites such as Paris, Cologne, and New York. Through close archival reading, I reconstruct the social conditions of work in the SdF, as well as ways in which changes in its output over time reflected changes in institutional priorities at RAI.

    This year I spent a very special summer holiday, the best I've ever experienced!!! I was in Sarah Clark's Irish Dance camp: CAMP RINCE PROVENCE Let me tell you, it was simply amazing! I spent 6 days doing what I love to do!! My feet were terrible in the end but I enjoyed every single minute of it!! We could learn from 4 of the world's best Irish dancers: Breandán de Gallaí - Sarah Clark Joanne Doyle - Stephen Scariff and that was really incredible!!! You had those people, that you normally see on stage, right in front of you and could learn from them!! I mean, I knew that we would have instructors, who had (among others) been with Michael's shows Riverdance or Lord of the Dance, but I wasn't really aware of what that would actually mean! We had some of the most incredible Irish dancers directly in front of your eyes!!! Never before I had so marvellous teachers! Everyone of us, doesn't matter which level or age, could learn so terribly much from these amazing instructors.... and they haven't only been brilliant teachers to us, but also very lovely people, you could have a lot of fun with!! The general organisation was also very well done! Don't ask me how Sarah managed all that, I can't imagine!! Everybody's arrival and departure was arranged to his/her best satisfaction, we had an amazing schedule of dancing classes where we could even choose between different bonus classes each day, dinner & lunch were very well organized as well as the evening program and the shuttle busses each time from the apartments to the dancing halls and back!! Moreover Sarah cared about everybody's additional wishes & problems, as big or small they might have been, and that was really remarkable!! Honestly, I was wondering sometimes if she had another twin sister somewhere helping her to get all this done!! :-) So, we spent an incredible week dancing all the time and meeting many like-minded people from all over Europe!! I remember Michael saying once about Feet of Flames having successfully performed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in front of 80.000 people, that..

The Development of Grassroots Football in Regional Ireland: the Case of the Donegal League, 1971–1996 Abstract This article assesses the development of association football at grassroots’ level in County Donegal, a peripheral county lying in the north-west of the Republic of Ire- land. Despite the foundation of the County Donegal Football Association in 1894, soccer organisers there were unable to develop a permanent competitive structure for the game until the late 20th century and the more ambitious teams were generally forced to affiliate with leagues in nearby Derry city. In discussing the reasons for this lack of a regular structure, this paper will also focus on the success of the Donegal League, founded in 1971, in providing a season long calendar of games. It also looks at soccer administrators’ rivalry with those of Gaelic football there, and the impact of the nationalist Gaelic Athletic Association’s ‘ban’ on its members taking part in what the organisation termed ‘foreign games’. In particular, the extent to which the removal of the ‘ban’ in 1971 helped to ease co-operation between organisers of Gaelic and Association football will be explored. The objective is to determine what this history reveals about the changing roles of both the national language and national cinema in Ireland. The study of Irish- language film provides an illustrative and significant example of the participation of a minority perspective within a small national cinema. It is also illustrates the potential role of cinema in language maintenance and revitalization. Research is focused on policies and practices of filmmaking, with additional consideration given to film distribution, exhibition, and reception. Furthermore, films are analysed based on the strategies used by filmmakers to integrate the traditional Irish language with the modern medium of film, as well as their motivations for doing so. Research methods included archival work, textual analysis, personal interviews, and review of scholarly, popular, and trade publications. Case studies are offered on three movements in Irish-language film. First, the Irish- language organization Gael Linn produced documentaries in the 1950s and 1960s that promoted a strongly nationalist version of Irish history while also exacerbating the view of Irish as a “private discourse” of nationalism. Second, independent filmmaker Bob Quinn operated in the Irish-speaking area of Connemara in the 1970s; his fiction films from that era situated the regional affiliations of the language within the national context.
