Costa Rica’s cities, jungles and mountains will be the global classroom of your first year. While living with a local family, you’ll engage in an academic program that includes fieldwork, service learning and independent research. Along the way, you’ll learn Spanish, gain a Latin American perspective on global issues and participate in a renowned Model United Nations program with students from around the world. LIU Global’s Costa Rica Center includes a computer lab with Wi-Fi access, library, classrooms, dining room, garden and community area. As you travel to neighboring countries, such as Nicaragua and Panama, you’ll explore tensions that arise as economic development challenges human and natural environments.

China is a central player in geopolitics and world economics. If you choose to spend a year at LIU Global’s China Center in , you will experience firsthand how the nation’s diverse people make sense of their country’s tumultuous history and its dynamic development. On the campus of the prestigious Zhejiang University, within walking distance of the famous West Lake, you will study the Chinese language in one of the country’s most beautiful settings—just a one-hour train ride from the great world city of .

Comparative Religion and Culture: Taiwan, Thailand and India

Working in three different countries over the course of an academic year, you will be immersed in the teachings, practices and institutional forms of the major world religions practiced in these regions. You will explore the impact of these beliefs on identity, community and cross-cultural communication. LIU Global’s curriculum encourages students to engage with worldviews that differ from their own.

Your base camp will be Byron Bay, an intimate South Pacific beach community located in subtropical New South Wales. Possible topics of study include Australian society and environmental history; Aboriginal ecology; the destruction of old growth forests; land degradation and salt accumulation in soils; irrigation and water resource issues; uranium mining; coastal zone development and ocean pollution; ecological medicine; bio-diversity; and architecture appropriate for desert regions. Rigorous courses are supplemented by integrated field experiences that will take you to a range of environments, including world heritage-listed rainforests, rugged coastlines, ancient volcanoes and high-altitude granite country.

South Africa

South Africa is now on the cutting edge of global development. Your courses will be delivered on the Howard Campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban. You’ll live in comfortable and cosmopolitan dorms overlooking the harbor. In addition, you’ll be afforded independent study and internship options in education, health, arts and community development. Coursework includes an introduction to African Studies, theories of development in an African context, Zulu language and independent research.

Here, at LIU Brooklyn, you will complete a capstone experience—living, study - ing and interning in the world’s capital, New York City.
