Andy Clarke, League President 2 AmericanBicyclist chair’smessage [Hans van Naerssen] THE THUNDERHEAD RANCH THE THUNDERHEAD RANCH IS a place of many superlatives. Located 100 miles east of the majestic Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, Thunderhead Ranch is bordered by the dramatic Absaroka and Wind River Mountains. It’s a huge area etched by the appropriately named Windy River – as bicyclists discover while pumping uphill against the Trelentless wind heading west on Adventure Cycling’s Trans Am Route. The nearest town is 20 miles away, and the last 10 miles to the ranch is via a bumpy, dusty dirt road along the East Fork of the Windy River. It’s a vivid view and a jarring introduction to the endless stark western terrain. What does all of this have to do with the League of American Bicyclists? In June, more than 40 local, state and national bicycling advocacy leaders, including four League board members, met at the Thunderhead Ranch. We assembled in the barn-classroom to review the significant progress we’ve made since the first such gathering in 1996, which resulted in the creation of the Alliance for Biking & Walking, to assess the status of the bicycling movement 15 years later and to identify major issues and goals for the next 15 years. Discussions at the workshop confirmed the value of the League’s programs, highlighted a few areas that we need to revisit, and showed potential for more growth and impact. It was timely input for the 10-year strategic plan the League is drafting – the plan will be made public and available for comments later this year. There was interesting discussion about the ways to improve the effectiveness of the bicycling movement and its many organizations, and we will follow-up with a few of the groups to explore those ideas. We also played; hiked and biked; shared tall stories around the campfire; and most valuable to me, met with the many talented individuals who are working to make a difference. I hope you will each make a difference by contacting your elected officials when asked to ensure that bicyclists, pedestrians, Safe Routes to School, Complete Streets, and other non-motorized transportation programs are not excluded from federal transportation funding. Executive Summary This report was undertaken to examine the health effects of membership in the Capital Bikeshare program. Methods of analysis include a review of major research and scholarly works within the transportation field and other pertinent issue areas such as health and economic policy. In addition to analyzing prior survey data of Capital Bikeshare members, we developed and, working closely with Capital Bikeshare staff, administered a new survey that allowed us to better understand the health benefits, both realized and unrealized, of the four-year-old program. Although the survey results suggest Capital Bikeshare members tend to be healthier than the population at-large and would therefore not be expected to derive substantial health benefits from the program, we pinpointed several promising findings in the response data.

We depict the inner workings of the program and its problems, focusing on possible causes. We include analyses of public bicycle systems throughout the world and the design rationale behind them. Our report also examines the technology underlying “smart-bike” systems, comparing the advantages and costs relative to coin deposit bikes. We conclude with recommendations on possible allocation of the City Bike Foundation’s resources to increase the quality of service to the community, while improving the publicity received by the city of Copenhagen. 1 Acknowledgements We would like to thank the following for making this project successful. The Strong Unearths Rare Atari Footage through Digital Preservation Efforts While digitizing U-Matic tapes (an analog videocassette format) in The Strong’s Atari Coin-Op Division collection, museum curators and library staff recently discovered a wide range of never-before-seen footage—including video of Atari’s offices and manufacturing lines, its arcade cabinet construction practices, and company-wide staff celebrations. The footage also includes gameplay of many of Atari’s popular titles, as well as video concepts for games never released. The video collection offers an unprecedented look at the inner-workings of Atari at its height at a time that it helped to lay the groundwork for the modern video game industry. Among those methods in encouraging cycling implementing public bicycle schemes is one. The public bicycle schemes are also known as bicycle sharing systems, community bicycling schemes etc., The main idea of a public bicycle system is that the user need not own a bicycle but still gain the advantages of bicycling by renting a bicycle provided by the scheme for a nominal fee or for free of charge (as in some cities). Most of these schemes enable people to realize one way trips, because the users needn’t to return the bicycles to the origin, which will avoid unnecessary travel. Public bicycle schemes provide not only convenience for trips in the communities, they can also be a good addition to the public transport system. Encouraging public bike systems have shown that there can be numerous short that could be made by a bicycle instead of using motorised modes. Public bike schemes also encourage creative designs in bikes and also in the operational mechanisms. The current document is one of the several efforts of GTZ-Sustainable Urban Transport Project to bring to the policymakers an easy to access list of available material on Public Bike Schemes (PBS) which can be used in their everyday work. The document aims to list out some influential and informative resources that highlight the importance of PBS in cities and how the existing situation could be improved.
