Dual naming of sea areas in modern atlases and implications for the East Sea/Sea of Japan case Rainer DORMELS* Dual naming is, to varying extents, present in nearly all atlases. The empirical research in this paper deals with the dual naming of sea areas in about 20 atlases from different nations in the years from 2006 to 2017. Objective, quality, and size of the atlases and the country where the atlases originated from play a key role. All these characteristics of the atlases will be taken into account in the paper. In the cases of dual naming of sea areas, we can, in general, differentiate between: cases where both names are exonyms, cases where both names are endonyms, and cases where one name is an endonym, while the other is an exonym. The goal of this paper is to suggest a typology of dual names of sea areas in different atlases. As it turns out, dual names of sea areas in atlases have different functions, and in many atlases, dual naming is not a singular exception. Dual naming may help the users of atlases to orientate themselves better. Additionally, dual naming allows for providing valuable information to the users. Regarding the naming of the sea between Korea and Japan present study has achieved the following results: the East Sea/Sea of Japan is the sea area, which by far showed the most use of dual naming in the atlases examined, in all cases of dual naming two exonyms were used, even in atlases, which allow dual naming just in very few cases, the East Sea/Sea of Japan is presented with dual naming. -

GMJ: Mediterranean Edition 2(1) Spring 2007 63 The Communication Imperative in an Era of Globalization: Beyond Conflict-Conditioned Communication Harry Anastasiou Introduction The idea that a nation, an ethnic group, a class, or a society can protect itself or refrain from communicative interactions with other nations, ethnic groups, classes or societies is no longer tenable. The emerging complex conditions of globalization wrought by modern technology are rapidly affecting a global implosion by which historically distinctive people, cultures, values, religions, identities, civilizations and their respective socio-economic and political structures inadvertently come into increasing contact with each other (Ellul, 1980; Falk, 1999; Castells, 2000). Diverse people and cultures are rapidly confronted with the fact or the prospect that they will inevitably encounter, mix, overlap, and conflate at various levels with “the others”, despite their preferences or wishes. Under these conditions, communicating effectively and meaningfully across national, ethnic, religious, cultural, and class lines is no longer a matter of choice but an imperative of life in the emerging post-modern world. According to Bohm (2004), while the electronic mass media integrate the world’s mass communication networks, the world is confronted with a communication crisis. An essential component of this crisis is that the matrix of on-going international, inter-religious, inter-ethnic, and likely inter- civilization conflicts has effectively eroded the conditions for effective and meaningful communication. The simultaneous and instantaneous electronic transference of information does not suffice for meaningful communication, as communication breakdown occurs despite the high efficiency of the electronic media world. The particular manner in which conflict impacts inter-group communication thus warrants attention. -

Tauris (London, 2015), xviii and 288 pp. ISBN: 978-1-78076-752-9 In April 2004, in the weeks leading up to the referendum on the Annan Plan, numerous events were held across Cyprus to discuss the relative merits and, more usually, drawbacks of the proposals for the island’s reunification. One of these events, which took place in Nicosia, involved the then Irish Ambassador to Cyprus. Like many other European Union diplomats based on the island at the time, he openly supported the Plan. He therefore used the opportunity to call on people to vote ‘Yes’ in the forthcoming poll. At the end of his speech, a Greek Cypriot man got up from his seat and launched in to a full scale condemnation of the ambassador’s position. In doing so, he uttered an immortal line. In all seriousness, he asked the ambassador what he could possible know about conflict and division. The rest of the audience was left utterly dumbfounded. It simply defied belief that anyone could have made such a comment. Indeed, it was almost impossible to quite take in what had just been said. If anything, most Greek Cypriots were more than aware of the apparent commonalities shared by the two islands. Indeed, to most Greek Cypriots, it is almost as though the people of Cyprus and Ireland are spiritual kin. Against this backdrop, it is perhaps surprising that there has been remarkably little written on the relationship between Cyprus and Ireland. -

In between these north and south parts lies the well-known Cyprus Buffer zone that to this day expresses the realities of the armed conflict that took place there four decades ago. This buffer zone rep- resents the lack of communication and mistrust that exists between the two ‘rival’ sides. As a Cypriot designer I felt the need to come up with an appropri- ate project that will bring people closer together, giving them the chance to communicate, debate, exchange knowledge and views and generally understand the needs of each side leading to a better and smoother social and cultural blend thus making it easier for the people to digest any future plans of total reunification. In order to get inspiration and a better understanding of how to deal with such situations I examined borders and their evolvement at differ- ent scales and contexts, but also looking at various peace-promoting projects in conflict zones. -

Das International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) erhebt jährlich Umfragedaten zu sozialwissenschaftlich relevanten Themen. Der vorliegende ISSP Data Report – Religious Attitudes and Religious Change beruht auf ISSP-Daten, die zu drei verschiedenen Zeitpunkten innerhalb von 17 Jahren in bis zu 42 Mitgliedsländern zu Einstellungen gegenüber Kirche und Religion im weitesten Sinne gesammelt wurden. Jedes Kapitel wurde von unterschiedlichen Autoren der ISSP-Gemeinschaft geschrieben und beleuchtet mit Hilfe der ISSP-Daten spezielle Aspekte religiöser Einstellungen und religiösen Wandels im internationalen Vergleich. In der Gesamtschau ergeben sich sowohl Einblicke in das religiöse Leben verschiedener Länder, als auch insbesondere Erkenntnisse zu den Einflussfaktoren religiösen Wandels innerhalb von fast zwei Dekaden. INFORMATION PAPER United Kingdom Overseas Territories - Toponymic Information United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs), also known as British Overseas Territories (BOTs), have constitutional and historical links with the United Kingdom, but do not form part of the United Kingdom itself. The Queen is the Head of State of all the UKOTs, and she is represented by a Governor or Commissioner (apart from the UK Sovereign Base Areas that are administered by MOD). Each Territory has its own Constitution, its own Government and its own local laws. The 14 territories are: Anguilla; Bermuda; British Antarctic Territory (BAT); British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT); British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands; Falkland Islands; Gibraltar; Montserrat; Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands; Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha; South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands; Turks and Caicos Islands; UK Sovereign Base Areas. PCGN recommend the term ‘British Overseas Territory Capital’ for the administrative centres of UKOTs. Production of mapping over the UKOTs does not take place systematically in the UK. Maps produced by the relevant territory, preferably by official bodies such as the local government or tourism authority, should be used for current geographical names. National government websites could also be used as an additional reference. Additionally, FCDO and MOD briefing maps may be used as a source for names in UKOTs. See the FCDO White Paper for more information about the UKOTs. ANGUILLA The territory, situated in the Caribbean, consists of the main island of Anguilla plus some smaller, mostly uninhabited islands. It is separated from the island of Saint Martin (split between Saint-Martin (France) and Sint Maarten (Netherlands)), 17km to the south, by the Anguilla Channel. -
Ethnic Nationalism and Consociational Democracy in Cyprus
BUJSS 9/2 (2016), 99-115 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18221/bujss.33634 * ETHNIC NATIONALISM AND CONSOCIATIONAL DEMOCRACY IN CYPRUS 1 Pinar Erkem ABSTRACT The 1960 Cyprus Republic, which had a bi-communal power-sharing system, could not have lasted for long and it turned from consociational democracy to majoritarian in 1963 after ethnic conflict. Attempts to find a solution to Cyprus problem still focus on ethnic power-sharing but the conditions and bi-communal relations prior to 1960 system, which are conducive to its failure, are not adequately consumed. The paper argues that, the reasons for the prolonged conflict derive from ethnic rivalry and lack of an overarching loyalty. Modernization, kin-state relations and colonial policies are the contributing factors. This paper aims to contribute to future institutional designs for not only Cyprus but for all divided societies.
