ISSUE68 SIXTY EIGHT JUNE 14th 2021 ISSUE 68 - 14 JUNE 2021

Things are definitely looking up now that taprooms and pubs are open again. In addition there are plenty of Craft Beer Fes- tivals on the horizon. TWICB are looking forward to Hop City next month and keen to network with brewers and drinkers alike over two fabulous days of great beer tasting. It’s been a long time since our last Festival, Friends & Family & Beer in Man- chester early last year when we launched Issue 1.

Though things in the UK are improving, the shock announcements about travel last week are a reminder that nothing in this Covid world of ours is certain. We are disappointed that the start our Grand Beer Tours is de- layed until later this year. However, once our destinations are officially on the ‘green list’ and set to stay there, we’re going full speed ahead. Don’t forget to keep checking the promotional pages in our Newsletters for details, and hopefully we’ll see you on one of our awesome trips.

14 BREWERS CORNER

Jeff at Beervana has a well-written summary of the biggest story in Craft Beer, with an account of how things moved on a pace this week with the publication of an open letter to Brew- dog by a large group of former employees.

https://www.beervanablog.com/beervana/2021/6/10/brew- dog-intersectionality-of-abuse

Jeff must have delved quite deep into his copy of the OED for the word intersectionality, but it is this concept that seems to make the case against Brewdog particularly compelling.

Not content with the above, Jeff also published an amazing piece that seems to sum up the reason that the evil Macros have struggled so hard to homogenise and “Nationalise” Craft Beer.

https://www.beervanablog.com/beervana/2021/6/9/the-diffi- cult-middle-market

Here at TWICB we celebrate the difficult “Middle Market”, if it is that which keeps Craft Beer (relatively) small and independent.

Good Beer Hunting look into the origins of the Cocoa that is increasingly appearing in our Craft Beers, and asks whether it is sourced as thoughtfully and lovingly as hops?

https://www.goodbeerhunting.com/blog/2021/6/8/cacao-brew- ing-and-the-price-of-nostalgia-toward-a-better-future-for-choco- late-beer

Finally, it’s no secret that we are really keen to start doing some beer-tourism here at TWICB. https://brewpublic.com/beer-events/fresh-hop-ale-festival-re- turns-to-yakima-in-october-2021/

Although the 2021 Yakima Valley Fresh Hops Festival is a bit too soon to feature as one of our Grand Tours, rest assured that it’s under serious consideration for inclusion on the 2022 schedule.

taproom review

The Kernel Brewery Taproom, Arch 7, Dockley Road Industrial Estate, Dockley Rd, London

The Kernel Brewery Taproom is situated in a snug railway arch towards one end of the iconic Bermondsey Beer Mile, and is a few minutes walk from Bermondsey Tube Station. Inside there are 6 or 7 tables, each seating up to 6 people, and there is room for outside for additional tables when the weather permits. They take bookings in ad- vance, though half of the indoor tables and all outdoor tables are for walk-ins only.

The premises is clean, tidy and understated, and the table service is decent. The bar comprises of 14 taps, and, when we visited, all were Kernel beers. A good selection of their Pales, IPAs, Sai- sons, Brown ales, Sours and Foeder beers were on offer. A well stocked fridge contained alterna- tive Kernel options and supplies for takeaway.

No food is sold here but luckily, due to it’s lo- cation, you’re unlikely to go hungry for long as there are many fabulous street food places near- by.

19 The only minor frustration was that we had difficulty in checking our beers into Untapped as the site appeared to be a dead zone for several mobile networks (on the day we visit- ed at least). A wifi network was available but the password didn’t appear to be displayed anywhere ( or, if it was, we’d drunk too many beers to see it!)

Overall, a pleasant experience was had and all the Kernel beers slipped down a treat. If you find yourself on the Bermondsey Beer Mile the venue is certainly a good starting point especially as it opens at 11:00 on a Saturday, an hour or 2 before most other tap- rooms on the mile.

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and let us know what you think?! www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research, production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?! A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three or six months at a certain tier.
