BREWER’S CORNER Miscellaneous Beery News

Beer & Brewing have an article celebrating the fact that 29th November is designated Small Brewery Sunday in the USA. https://beerandbrewing.com/who-needs-black-friday-we-have-small-brewery-sunday/

We know that the 29th was yesterday(!), but there is nothing to stop us all doing something to help our favourite local brewery this coming week. They make a great point, which is even if you have got more beer than you need in your fridge already, we should all think about buying some merchandise or gift vouchers as Christmas presents. Every little helps!

For those in need of a little escapism, The Beer Thrillers have a delightful long-form account of a pre-Thanksgiving hiking trip in Western Pennsylvania, taking in a couple of Taproom visits each day. The whole trip is beautifully photographed and meticulously described.

https://thebeerthrillers.home.blog/2020/11/22/the-trip-to-indianapolis-day-one-1000-steps-trail- juniata-brewing-company-ghost-town-trail-hoodlebug-levity-brewing/

After reading this, you are going to want to check whether your passport has expired or not, just so you are ready for some post-COVID beer travel!

The Guys Drinking Beer Blog have a poignant eulogy to a neighbourhood German Pub in Central Chicago, which has succumbed to the almost impossible challenge of trading through this nightmare year for hospitality.

https://www.guysdrinkingbeer.com/the-huettenbar-is-gone-long- live-the-huettenbar/

Sadly, there will likely be many more similar eulogies to be written for bars and pubs in the UK, before we are out the other side of COVID-19.

Finally, this week in Cloudwater will see Paul and Co. hosting an event with the superb Green Cheek from California.

You have until 9am on Tuesday 1st Dec to place your order for this event.

Here at TWICB, we are not claiming to be the UK's largest lobby group, or even the UK's largest beer lobby group(!), but we do have a growing audience, who we hope might be willing to support the following Craft Beer related causes!

Petition Lambeth Council to permit London Beer Factory to open a new Taproom at their West Norwood Brewery.

London Beer Factory are aiming to create a relaxed, family-friendly brewery taproom within their newly leased warehouse unit on Beadman St, West Norwood. However, their application for license has been impeded, meaning they cannot serve the people of their neighbourhood or sustain their site.

SUCCESS!

London Beer Factory won their appeal and have been granted a licence.

Petition Southwark Council to pedestrianise the Bermondsey Beer Mile on a Saturday.

With pedestrianisation of some of the busiest streets in Bermondsey on Saturdays only, we can get the many bars and restaurants back up to their previous operating levels whilst keeping customers safe with outdoor drinking.

Reverse the change to Small Brewers Relief

The Treasury has announced changes to Small Brewers Relief (SBR) – the progressive tax system that has revolutionised UK brewing. These changes will reduce the 50% duty threshold from 5,000hl to 2,100hl: small breweries will have to pay more duty, whilst larger breweries could pay the same or less.

At the moment, we are conscious that this is very London-focused! Please help us to make this list of causes more UK-inclusive, by suggesting your local petitions for inclusion on this list!
