All quotations have been i distinguished and the source of information acknowledged. i ! i Patricia McLean i February 2002 Abstract \ This thesis is a study of Thai Protestant Christianity, with a focus on cultural and theological interactions among western missionaries of the American Presbyterian Mission (APM) and the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF), and the indigenous i Thai churches that the missionaries created: the Church of Christ in Thailand (CCT) i and the Associated Churches of Thailand - Central (ACTC). I I The thesis offers a comprehensive historical analysis of the growth of Protestant Christianity in Thailand since the arrival of the first American Presbyterian i missionaries in 1840. Recognising that the pre-Second World War history of APM, and the early history of CCT, founded in 1932, already exist, the research concentrates on the post-1945 history of Protestantism inl Thailand. This includes the work of OMF that established itself in Thailand in 1952 jfollowing the closure of the i work of its predecessor organisation, the China Inland Mission, in China. The i primary focus on the more recent history of Protestant Christianity in Thailand means that equal attention is given to the emergence of indigenous Thai Christianity, both in CCT, and in ACTC that was constituted in 1985. j Within this historical perspective, the thesis concentrates on the different ways in which missionaries and indigenous Christians have related Christianity to Thai Buddhist culture within the matrix of Thai Buddhism. The thesis compares and contrasts approaches adopted toward Thai Buddhist culture and Thai Buddhism by the missionaries, analysing differences of perspective between APM and OMF missionaries. It goes on to compare these with the evolving patterns of engagement with Thai Buddhism and Thai Buddhist culture among Thai Christians of CCT and ACTC. The thesis demonstrates that there is a distinct difference of approach between APM and OMF missionaries, but that these differences are being resolved in the emerging consensus among Thai Christians of the twoj traditions as they re­ interpret their Christian faith in the Thai context. i in The research uses both historical and qualitative research methods. The former are employed for the institutional history of the missions and the churches that they founded. The latter are used for a contextual analysis of the beliefs and practices of foreign missionaries and Thai Christians. The main qualitative research method used i has been interviews, but focus groups have also been usbd insofar as they were practically possible and culturally appropriate. | I i The thesis comprises nine chapters and is divided into triree parts. Part One (Chapters 1 and 2) provides a historical and theological background to the study, introducing i Thai Buddhism and the origins of Protestant Christianity in Thailand. Part Two i (Chapters 3 to 6) analyses the post-1945 history of APM and OMF in Thailand, with specific reference to their approaches to evangelism, mission-church relations, and attitudes to Thai Buddhist culture. Part Three (Chapters 7 and 8) examines the engagement of CCT and ACTC Thai Christians with Thai Buddhist culture and j concludes with a comparison and contrast between missionary and indigenous i approaches. The final chapter (Chapter 9) summarises the research findings and i discusses the present state of Thai Christianity's contextualisation in Thai Buddhist culture. !     Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays ABSTRACT Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. In many ways it is the most striking example of that resurgence. Along with Roman Catholics, as of the 1950s Chinese Protestants carried the heavy historical liability of association with Western domi- nation or imperialism in China, yet they have not only overcome that inheritance but have achieved remarkable growth. Popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. This article first traces the gradual extension of interest in Chinese Protestants from Christian circles to the scholarly world during the last two decades, and then discusses salient characteristics of the Protestant movement today. These include its size and rate of growth, the role of Church–state relations, the continuing foreign legacy in some parts of the Church, the strong flavour of popular religion which suffuses Protestantism today, the discourse of Chinese intellectuals on Christianity, and Protestantism in the context of the rapid economic changes occurring in China, concluding with a perspective from world Christianity. Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. Today, on any given Sunday there are almost certainly more Protestants in church in China than in all of Europe.1 One recent thoughtful scholarly assessment characterizes Protestantism as “flourishing” though also “fractured” (organizationally) and “fragile” (due to limits on the social and cultural role of the Church).2 And popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants.

Pruden background: Religion and Trade European Catholics mounted the first systematic effort to convert Chinese to Christi- anity in the late sixteenth century. Their work was part of the Catholic Counter Refor- mation, but by 1750, the glory days were over. Jesuits such as Matteo Ricci (1552–1610) had not only won converts, but gained the respect of influential Chinese and even some emperors in the latter part of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and the early part of the Qing dynasty (1644– 1912). Their success stemmed in part from accommodating the tradition of venerating an- cestors (calling it a civil and not a religious prac- tice) and using Chinese terms to refer to God. A rival monastic order, though, had gained the Pope’s support in condemning those accommodations. This Rites Controversy came to a head during the early eighteenth century. After Pope Clement IX prohibited Chinese Christian converts from taking part in ancestor-veneration ceremonies in 1715, the Kangxi Emperor in 1721 banned all Christian preaching in China. Although Catholic missionaries remained in China, their numbers and influence dwindled. ithin a few decades of the decline of Catholic presence in China, western European merchants arrived in growing numbers, eager for trade. Silk and porcelain—at the time produced only in WChina—fed a growing appetite for chinoiserie among the European elite classes. Tea became a popular beverage, not only for the aristocracy, but also for their affluent, social-climbing imitators among the country gentry and urban merchant class.

    ABSTRACT Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan and Its Impact on the Taiping Movement Sukjoo Kim, Ph.D. Mentor: Rosalie Beck, Ph.D. Scholars of the Taiping Movement have assumed that Liang Fa’s Quanshi liangyan 勸世良言 (Good Words to Admonish the Age, being Nine Miscellaneous Christian Tracts) greatly influenced Hong Xiuquan, but very little has been written on the role of Liang’s work. The main reason is that even though hundreds of copies were distributed in the early nineteenth century, only four survived the destruction which followed the failure of the Taiping Movement. This dissertation therefore explores the extent of the Christian influence of Liang’s nine tracts on Hong and the Taiping Movement. This study begins with an introduction to China in the nineteenth century and the early missions of western countries in China. The second chapter focuses on the life and work of Liang. His religious background was in Confucianism and Buddhism, but when he encountered Robert Morrison and William Milne, he identified with Christianity. The third chapter discusses the story of Hong especially examining Hong’s acquisition of Liang’s Quanshi liangyan and Hong’s revelatory dream, both of which serve as motives for the establishment of the Society of God Worshippers and the Taiping Movement. The fourth chapter develops Liang’s key ideas from his Quanshi liangyan and compares them with Hong’s beliefs, as found in official documents of the Taipings. The fifth chapter describes Hong’s beliefs and the actual practices of the Taiping Movement and compares them with Liang’s key ideas.
