There is Gno conceivable situation in which it is not safe to trust Him utterly. Such is the thesis of this book. For six decades the apostle of faith of the last century, George Muller, conducted five large orphan homes in dependence on God alone, neither making nor permitting any appeal to man. Thousands of orphans were given home and education and brought to the Saviour. But beneficent as was this ministry, he did not conceive it to be the primary object of these institutions. To him they· provided a unique opportunity of bringing home to a generation to whom He had become remote, the unfailing faithfulness of God. "The supreme object of these institu tions," he wrote, "is to prove God's faithfulness and the perfect safety of trusting solely to His promises ... to lead those who are weak in faith to see that there is reality in dealing with God alone." In the materialistic intellectual climate of our times, when the intervention of God in personal affairs is hardly expected, the message of this book is singularly appropriate and well-timed. Its objective is not to laud a missionary society or to exalt persons who may be incidentally mentioned. Rather does it aim to demonstrate that in our own day and generation God responds magnificently to the trust of His people. Its message is calculated to inspire those who have never been "shut up to God alone" to welcome that experience with a calm, well founded confidence. The quarter-century covered in this record, years of 8 PROVING GOD war and revolution on an unprecedented scale, was probably the most disturbed and tumultuous in the ninety years history of the China Inland Mission. Hardly any year of the twenty-five was normal for missionary work. But the very darkness of the background only serves to enhance the wonders of Divine superintend ence and deliverance experienced during those days. The deliverance is signal only in proportion as the danger is serious, and is most significant when apart from God we face despair. It would seem as though the sovereign Lord deliberately allowed desperate and impossible situations to arise in order that His servants might have new and unmistakable evidence of His activity on their behalf. Had Lazarus not died, Mary and Martha would not then have realized their Lord as the resurrection and the life with what tragic impoverishment to themselves and succeeding generations. The very dashing of their hopes and flowing of their tears provided the necessary back ground for a new revelation of their Master. Divine love permits severe testing, not for its own sake, but because in this crucible alone can faith be purified and strength ened. To grasp the full significance of this record, the principles upon which the C.I.M. Overseas Missionary Fellowship operates must be understood. Implicit in its constitution is the conviction that we are dealing not with a God who is remote or disinterested, but who always responds to faith and will without fail and in good time meet every need of the worker whom He has called into His harvest-field. Going into debt either as a Mission or as individuals is regarded as being inconsistent with the principle of entire dependence on God. If this is indeed God's work, He is bound to support it. The Mission does not function on the budget system; expenditures are determined by funds received. As to the method of FOREWORD 9 support, "the needs of the work are laid before God in prayer, no person being authorized to solicit funds or take collections on behalf of the Mission." Thus, when the stupendous task of evacuating the 600 missionaries and 200 children scattered over the whole of China was faced, an operation involving the expenditure of £113,000, towards which there was only £1,500 in the Mission treasury, urgent though the need was, no appeal what ever was made. All over the world, however, missionaries and friends laid it before God in prayer. With what result? Not one missionary was detained one day, either in China or on their journey to the homelands, through lack of funds. Every obligation was promptly met. "He abideth faithful," wrote the founder of the Mission. "Ifwe are really trusting in Him and seekingfrom Him, we cannot be put to shame; if not, perhaps the sooner we find the unsoundness of any other foundation the better. The Mission funds or the donors are a poor substitute for the living God." In this fascinating record we are presented with some striking illustrations of the attributes and activity of our God. The sovereignty of a God who uses even His enemies to fulfil His beneficent purposes. When all available Mission funds in Communist China had been used and every conceivable source from which money could be imported into the country had dried up, who would have dreamed of the possibility of the Communist Government itself being the unwitting instrument of supplying travel funds for hundreds of missionaries it was expelling from the land? And yet such was the case. Who would have expected urgently needed premises to be provided at a fraction of their cost as the result of a vivid dream which came to a Chinese Buddhist? How safe we can feel when all our IO PROVING GOD affairs are in the hands of a God who is free through friend or foe to work His sovereign will-a will which always moves in the highest interests of His children. The foreknowledge of a God who is never taken by surprise. In the presence of the famishing multitudes our Lord addressed the question to Philip, "Whence shall we buy bread that these may eat?" This did not imply that He was at a loss to know what to do, for "this He said to prove him, for He Himself knew what He would do," as subsequent events revealed. The apparent impossibility of the situation was quite irrelevant in the presence of the prescient Son of God who always knows what He will do. It is one thing to hold the Divine foreknowledge as an article of belief, but quite a different matter to be the subject of its operation. The greatest degree of human sagacity and foresight could never have anticipated with accuracy the fluctuations of exchange in a world aflame, and made provision accordingly. And yet this has been the experience in the Mission treasury on numerous occasions. Even in the midst of fantastic inflation such as occurred during the Nationalist regime in China, there can be perfect rest of heart with our affairs in the hands of a God who is never taken at a disadvantage. The accurate timing of a God who is never too late. There are prayers which must be answered by a certain time or not at all. Hundreds of missionaries and two hundred children were to be evacuated to Hongkong, but Mission premises, in that city crowded with refugees, could house only half a dozen, and despite diligent search no further accom modation could be found. How God made the provision in the nick of time is told in these pages, as also what He did just when a pegged exchange was making it absolutely impossible to carry on the work of the Mission. Will not those most vitally concerned be eternally grateful for the opportunity to prove Him as the God who is never too FOREWORD II late? It is only by using faith that we are kept from losing it. The particulariry of God's care for His children is writ large on these pages. He does not conduct His work on the assembly-line principle, but evinces an intimate and personal interest in the members of His great family. An elderly missionary, travelling on foot with thousands of other refugees, came to the end of her endurance and was about to fall by the roadside, when strong hands reached down and complete strangers pulled her into an already overcrowded truck. Beleaguered missionaries had for long been without meat. A chicken flew into their isolated compound. A family returning to China found themselves without any money whatsoever as they set out to cross the Pacific. The very day the pooled tips were due an anonymous gift for the exact sum was received. He whose eye is on the sparrow is lovingly concerned with the intimate detail of the daily lives of His children. The variery of God's method of supply is in keeping with the infinite diversity of His activity in nature. A widow gives a few sacrificial shillings and the gift is multiplied a hundredfold; property is bought in an area where values suddenly increase just prior to its being sold; there is a hitch in a banking procedure; the pressure gauge of an aeroplane goes awry; in no two emergencies does the answer to prayer take the same form.
