Hudson Taylor’s Spiritual Secret FOREWORD This record has been prepared especially for readers unfamiliar with the details of Mr. Hudson Taylor's life. Those who have read the larger biography by the present writers, or Mr. Marshall Broomhall's more recent presentation, will find little that is new in these pages. But there are many, in the western world especially, who have hardly heard of Hudson Taylor, who have little time for reading and might turn away from a book in two volumes, yet who need and long for just the inward joy and power that Hudson Taylor found. The desire of the writers is to make available to busy people the experiences of their beloved father—thankful for the blessing brought to their own lives by what he was, and what he found in God, no less than by his fruitful labors. What the church needs today is not more machinery or better, not new organizations or more and novel methods, but men whom the Holy Ghost can use—men of prayer, men mighty in prayer. The Holy Ghost does not come on machinery, but on men. He does not anoint plans, but men—men of prayer . The training of the Twelve was the great, difficult and enduring work of Christ. It is not great talents or great learning or great preachers that God needs, but men great in holiness, great in faith, great in love, great in fidelity, great for God—men always preaching by holy sermons in the pulpit, by holy lives out of it. -

June 2017 The Church We Didn’t Choose The following article has been written by Jon Bloom, co-founder of the Desiring God website. Further articles can be found on www.desiringgod.org It can be really hard to love the church. Every Christian, who’s been one for very long, knows this. The earthly church has always been a motley crew. It’s never been ideal. The New Testament exists because churches, to differing degrees, have always been a mess — a glorious mess of saints still polluted by remaining sin, affected by defective genes, brains, and bodies, and influenced by life-shaping pasts. This mess rarely looks glorious to us up close. It looks like a lot of sin and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears invested into a lot of futility. It often looks like something we’d rather escape than join. But this is the way it’s supposed to be. Because the mess is what draws out the one thing that advances the church’s mission more than anything else. And this one thing is why we must not, for selfish reasons, leave the church. Jesus’ very first disciples didn’t get to choose each other. Jesus chose them (John 15:16). They just found themselves thrown together. The very next generation of early Christians didn’t get to choose each other either. They too were thrown together with others they likely wouldn’t have chosen: Palestinian and Hellenistic Jews, Jews and Gentiles, educated and uneducated, slaves and slave owners, impoverished and aristocrats, former zealots and former tax collectors, former prostitutes and former Pharisees. -

Chinese Protestant Christianity Today Daniel H. Bays ABSTRACT Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. In many ways it is the most striking example of that resurgence. Along with Roman Catholics, as of the 1950s Chinese Protestants carried the heavy historical liability of association with Western domi- nation or imperialism in China, yet they have not only overcome that inheritance but have achieved remarkable growth. Popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. This article first traces the gradual extension of interest in Chinese Protestants from Christian circles to the scholarly world during the last two decades, and then discusses salient characteristics of the Protestant movement today. These include its size and rate of growth, the role of Church–state relations, the continuing foreign legacy in some parts of the Church, the strong flavour of popular religion which suffuses Protestantism today, the discourse of Chinese intellectuals on Christianity, and Protestantism in the context of the rapid economic changes occurring in China, concluding with a perspective from world Christianity. Protestant Christianity has been a prominent part of the general religious resurgence in China in the past two decades. Today, on any given Sunday there are almost certainly more Protestants in church in China than in all of Europe.1 One recent thoughtful scholarly assessment characterizes Protestantism as “flourishing” though also “fractured” (organizationally) and “fragile” (due to limits on the social and cultural role of the Church).2 And popular media and human rights organizations in the West, as well as various Christian groups, publish a wide variety of information and commentary on Chinese Protestants. -

EM NATIONAL ASSEMBLY FOR WALES STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS 2004 No. (W. ) EDUCATION, WALES The Education (Listed Bodies) (Wales) Order 2004 EXPLANATORY NOTE (This note is not part of the Order) This Order lists the name of every body which is not a recognised body within section 216(4) of the Education Reform Act 1988 but which either— (a) provides any course which is in preparation for a degree to be granted by such a recognised body and is approved by or on behalf of that body; or (b) is a constituent college, school, hall or other institution of a university which is such a recognised body. Every university, college or other body that is authorised by Royal Charter or by or under Act of Parliament to grant degrees and every other body for the time being permitted by these bodies to act on their behalf in the granting of degrees, is a recognised body. The Order updates and replaces the list of bodies contained in the Education (Listed Bodies) (Wales) Order 2002, which is revoked. There are omitted from the Schedule to this Order a number of bodies previously within the list but which no longer provide courses that are approved by or on behalf of a recognised body. The Schedule includes a number of bodies that were not previously within the list but which now provide courses that are approved by or on behalf of a recognised body and incorporates other minor amendments and name changes. The church was organized on Sunday afternoon, A pril 9,1878, into an autonomous, independent Baptist church. The first structure (to be replaced) was built that summer, and is still used as the auditorium today. The first addition was added in 1949, and the second was completed in 1959. The educational building was dedicated in 1976. Wheelersburg Baptist Church has a rich heritage and looks forward to a great future. Max K. McCullough is the Pastor. 1 Inventory to the Helen E. Falls Collection AR 680 Prepared by: Taffey Hall, Archivist Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives August 2003 2 I. Biographical Sketch Dr. Helen Emery Falls, retired professor of Missions at the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) in New Orleans, Louisiana, dedicated her life to the teaching Southern Baptist mission studies. Though Falls never served as a missionary, her expertise in the knowledge and understanding of the history and structure of Southern Baptist missions both at home and abroad make her a connoisseur in the field of mission studies. She served as Professor of Missions and Dean of Women at NOBTS from 1945 to 1982 and has remained active in missions-education across the country since her retirement, serving as a visiting professor of missions at Boyce Bible College (a school of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary), Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. She also contributed articles to the Encyclopedia of Southern Baptists project of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Historical Commission. The daughter of an active Southern Baptist minister, Helen Falls spent much of the early years of her life moving from city to city with her family as her father accepted pastoral positions at various churches across the country. She was born in Bay City, Texas on April 17, 1916 to the Rev. Oswald Benjamin and Glennie Augusta (Parker). Shortly after she was born, Helen’s father accepted the position of pastor at the First Baptist Church of Kissimee, Florida. The Falls family stayed in Florida until 1921 when Helen’s father next accepted a pastoral position in Marion, South Carolina and two years later, a position in Bamberg, South Carolina. -

In the Summer 2014 issue of Japan Harvest magazine, the official publication of the Japan Evangelical Missionary Association (JEMA), we began publishing profiles of our member missions. This has been an ongoing process, both to assemble profiles of existing members, and gather those of new members. As a result, this current booklet is not in alphabetical order, rather in the order in which profiles were published in our magazine. As you read, please note the publishing date on the bottom of each page, and realize that for some missions their goals and activities may have changed since that time. Abstract: Collection of research notes and material related to Baptists and Evangelical Sectarians in Russia and Eastern Europe. The collection includes articles and publications related to early Christian movements in Russia. Collection also contains significant biographical information on evangelical leaders in Eastern Europe, including Russia. Size: 53 linear ft. (121 boxes) Collection #: AR 915 Biographical/Historical Sketch Albert Wardin, Jr. was born March 11, 1928, the first child of Anna and Albert Wardin of Portland, Oregon. He grew up on the family dairy farm in the Portland area. He received his B.A. degree from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, in 1946, and, a year later, he received his M.A. in history from Stanford. After Stanford, Wardin went to Western Seminary in Portland, where he got the bachelor of divinity degree. He completed his Ph.D. in history at the University of Oregon, writing his dissertation on Baptists in Oregon. Wardin taught at Western Seminary in Portland for a total of eight years. In 1967, he began a long career as history professor at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. He started collecting material on Russian Baptists because of his family connection with Russian Baptists. The family interest collection began in the 1960s and grew to a massive collection.
