Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Music › News Features Reviews Playlists Live Review: Within Temptation @ O2 Academy Birmingham 9/11/18 Within Temptation are absolutely mesmerizing on their latest world tour, writes Helena Senior Tuesday 20 November 2018 PHOTO: Neon Tommy; Flickr 8/10 This is the second time I’ve seen Dutch metal band Within Temptation live at Birmingham’s O2, a symphonic metal group formed in 1996 fronted by the ever-incredible Sharon den Adel. If you’re a fan of bands like Nightwish and Evanescence, then the operatic, gothic sounds of Within Temptation will be just up your street. Within Temptation opened their set with not one, but three songs from the new album Resist (due to be released 14 December)! Usually, opening with a block of new tracks that your audience may not be familiar with would be a bad idea in my books, but these guys make it work. The moment Sharon stepped out onto that stage, to ‘Raise your Banner’, waving a large white flag she had the entire audience under her spell. Her vocal talents will never cease to amaze me, considering she’s never had formal training. The operatic elements of Within Temptation sound amazing on their studio albums, but hearing it live absolutely blows me away every time. ‘Stand My Ground’ is an old favourite of mine, from The Silent Force album, and it’s definitely a favourite for the entire crowd. -

BIBLIOGRAPHY GENERAL ISSUES RELIGIONS AND PHILOSOPHY FIORANI, ELEONORA. Friedrich Engels e il materialismo dialettico. Feltrinelli Editore, Milano 1971. 272 pp. L. 3000. Engels's Anti-Diihring, Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy and Dialectics of Nature are the writings most elaborated upon by the author, who, refuting efforts to draw a line between Marx and Engels as regards their later followers, stresses Engels's contribution to Marxism. She argues that his contribution to dialectical materialism is still important for a clarification of topical issues, and makes some comments on the vicissitudes of diamat in the USSR. A chronology of Engels's life and an annotated bibliography are appended. HARTMANN, KLAUS. Die Marxsche Theorie. Eine philosophische Unter- suchung zu den Hauptschriften. Walter de Gruyter & Co, Berlin 1970. xii, 593 pp. DM 78.00. The author of this learned study undertakes a re-appraisal of Marx's theory from a purely philosophical angle. He criticizes Popper's theses (and lack of understanding of Hegelianism), but his own refutation of Marxian views brings him closer to Popper's. It is denied that a dialectical process going on in reality could justifiably be made to fit in the chain of historical necessity. Besides Marx's more philosophical writings all his major works, especially Capital, come up for discussion. Interesting are the comments on Marxist and non-Marxist evaluations of our time (Sartre, Habermas etc.). WILDERMUTH, ARMIN. Marx und die Verwirklichung der Philosophic. 1 Unmasking the Fake Belgians. Other Representation of Flemish And
Unmasking the Fake Belgians. Other Representation of Flemish and Walloon Elites between 1840 and 1860 Dave Sinardet & Vincent Scheltiens University of Antwerp / Free University of Brussels Paper prepared for 'Belgium: The State of the Federation' Louvain-La-Neuve, 17/10/2013 First draft All comments more than welcome! 1 Abstract In the Belgian political debate, regional and national identities are often presented as opposites, particularly by sub-state nationalist actors. Especially Flemish nationalists consider the Belgian state as artificial and obsolete and clearly support Flemish nation-building as a project directed against a Belgian federalist project. Walloon or francophone nationalism has not been very strong in recent years, but in the past Walloon regionalism has also directed itself against the Belgian state, amongst other things accused of aggravating Walloon economic decline. Despite this deep-seated antagonism between Belgian and Flemish/Walloon nation-building projects its roots are much shorter than most observers believe. Belgium’s artificial character – the grand narrative and underpinning legitimation of both substate nationalisms - has been vehemently contested in the past, not only by the French-speaking elites but especially by the Flemish movement in the period that it started up the construction of its national identity. Basing ourselves methodologically on the assumption that the construction of collective and national identities is as much a result of positive self-representation (identification) as of negative other- representation (alterification), moreover two ideas that are conceptually indissolubly related, we compare in this interdisciplinary contribution the mutual other representations of the Flemish and Walloon movements in mid-nineteenth century Belgium, when the Flemish-Walloon antagonism appeared on the surface. -
Dutch - Indonesian Language Mixing in Jakarta
Dutch - Indonesian language mixing in Jakarta Herman Giesbers 1. Introduction Within the field of language contact and language change we see an increasing interest in the phenomenon of language mixing or language intertwining (Bakker 1992). See e.g. Bakker & Mous (1994) for a recent overview of several mixed languages. Bakker (1992:187) proposes a definition of a mixed language as '(•••) a language which shows positive genetic similarities, in significant numbers, with two different languages.' Such mixed languages can be related to two different language families. However, they differ from Pidgins and Creoles in that they combine the grammar of an existing language A with the lexicon of a language B. Thus, the central process in language intertwining is not replacement, but combination. Which language is language A or B is totally determined by social factors. Language A providing the grammatical system for the mixed language, is always the better known language, which is also the language of the closest outsiders. In general, this language A is the language of the mothers in mixed families while language B providing the lexicon, is the language of the fathers. Bakker predicts from this model of intertwining that in a mixed language the grammar (syntax, morphology, phonology) is from language A, the lexicon from language B, and "free grammatical morphemes" or "function words" from both or from either of the languages. Another way to look at the process of language mixing is suggested by Myers-Scotton (1992). She claims that her Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model of code-switching can also account for other manifestations of language contact including the formation of 'new' languages. -
