He and his sister Sabine were twins. His brother Walter Gaeilge was killed during World War I, while his other brother, Klaus Bonhoeffer, was killed during World War II. Galego His sister married Hans von Dohnanyi and was the mother of the conductor Christoph von Dohnanyi and the later mayor of Hamburg, Klaus von Dohnanyi. His father, Karl Bonhoeffer, was a prominent Hrvatski German psychiatrist in Berlin. His mother, Paula, home-schooled the children. Though he was Bahasa Indonesia expected to follow his father into psychiatry, Bonhoeffer decided to become a theologian and later a Italiano pastor. He attended college in Tübingen and later at the University of Berlin, where he received his עברית doctorate in theology at the age of 21. Although Bonhoeffer would never totally abandon liberal theology, he did feel it was too constraining and responsible for the lack of relevance in the church. Bonhoeffer and Barth became main figures of the "neo-orthodox" movement mid-20th century in German- and English-speaking Protestantism. Bonhoeffer lectured on theology in Berlin and wrote several books. Bonhoeffer, Martin Niemöller, Karl Barth and others established the Confessing Church. In August 1933, he co-authored the Bethel Confession with Hermann Sasse and others. Between 1933 and 1935, he served as pastor of two German-speaking Protestant churches in London: St. Paul's and Sydenham. He traveled to India to study non-violent resistance with Gandhi, and returned to Germany to head a seminary for Confessing Church pastors, first in Finkenwalde and then at the vonHolder, Blumenthal estate of Gross Schlönwitz, which v. 3, 2009 was closed at the outbreak of World War II. He called for church resistance to Hitler's policies towards the Jews. The Confessing Church was not large, but it represented a major source of Christian opposition to the Nazi government. In 1939, Bonhoeffer joined a secret group of high-ranking military officers in the Abwehr (Military intelligence Office), who planned to end the National Socialist regime by killing Hitler. Bonhoeffer was arrested in April 1943 after money used to help Jews escape to Switzerland was traced to him. He was charged with conspiracy and imprisoned in Berlin for a year and a half. Imprisonment and execution [edit] After the failure of the July 20 Plot on Hitler's life in 1944 and the discovery of secret documents relating to the conspiracy by the Gestapo in September 1944, Bonhoeffer's connections with the conspirators were discovered. He was transferred from the military prison in Berlin Tegel, where he had been held for 18 months, to the detention cellar of the house prison of the Reich Security Head Office, the Gestapo’s high security prison. Zu diesen gehört jener, der mit dem Namen des Generalfeldmarschalls Werner von Blomberg, des Reichskriegsministers und Oberbefehlshabers der Wehr- macht, sowie des Generalobersten Werner Freiherrn von Fritsch, des Oberbefehls- habers des Heeres, verbunden ist. Der Anlaß für Blombergs Entlassung am 4. Februar 1938 war seine Heirat mit einer Frau, deren Vorleben als kompromittiert galt. Fritsch aber war der Homose- xualität, des Vergehens nach § 175 Strafgesetzbuch, beschuldigt worden. Auch er erhielt am selben Tage, dem 4. Februar, seinen Abschied. Um die gegen Fritsch er- hobenen Vorwürfe aufzuklären, ermittelte sowohl die Geheime Staatspolizei als auch das Reichskriegsgericht. Dies waren die Tatsachen, die im Frühjahr 1938 indessen nur wenigen Perso- nen verlaßlich bekannt waren. Der Öffentlichkeit war mitgeteilt worden, die Ver- abschiedung von Blomberg und Fritsch sei aus gesundheitlichen Gründen erfolgt.     Karl Barth’s contribution to the German Church struggle against National Socialism Ramathate Dolamo Department of Philosophy and Systematic Theology, University of South Africa, Pretoria, South Africa Abstract Germany was under a totalitarian regime led by Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1945. This article looks at the responses of the churches in Germany during that period. In particular, Karl Barth’s theology on church and state is examined to determine to what extent it did assist Germany in fighting National Socialism and in rebuilding Germany after the war. The author is of the view that most of Barth’s insights could be relevant and would be applicable today especially in those countries that are still being ruled by autocrats and dictators. Introduction Not only do theologians differ as to whether the (divine) com- mand should be grounded in the Christology or in the “orders of creation”, but also some theologians appear unwilling to recognise that the command is the ground and the instrument of God’s creative will of love both in originating and in sustaining creation in its historical development (Maimela 1984:158). Karl Barth’s views on sociopolitical matters especially those on church and state relations that he started to formulate during his Safenwil pastorate in 1911 were put to the harshest and rigorous test during the reign of Adolf Hitler from 1933 to the end of World War II in 1945. This article is an appre- ciation of the insights of Barth as a theologian and as an activist during the church struggle in Germany against National Socialism.

The meeting was chaired by Franz Gürtner, the Reich Minister of Justice, and attended by officials who in the coming years would play central roles in the persecution of Germany’s Jews. Among those present was Bernhard Lösener, one of the principal draftsmen of the Nuremberg Laws; and the terrifying Roland Freisler, later President of the Nazi People’s Court and a man whose name has endured as a byword for twentieth-century judicial savagery. The meeting was an important one, and a stenographer was present to record a verbatim transcript, to be preserved by the ever-diligent Nazi bureaucracy as a record of a crucial moment in the creation of the new race regime. That transcript reveals the startling fact that is my point of departure in this study: the meeting involved detailed and lengthy discussions of the law of the United States.

(3) Dem niedersächsischen Beispiel – mit Verbesserungen – sollten alle Länder folgen, die über keine vergleichbare gesetzliche Regelung verfügen. Es kann heute juristisch im Grunde als unbestritten gelten, dass die Geschäftsordnungsautonomie des Parlaments nicht als ausreichende rechtliche Grundlage dienen kann, das Verhalten der Abgeordneten außer- halb des Parlaments zu reglementieren15. Alle Geschäftsordnungs- und Verhaltensregeln auf dieser Basis können daher nur als Anstandsregeln, nicht aber als Sanktionsnormen begriff en werden. Politisch dürfte auch weitgehender Konsens darüber bestehen, das „Modell VW“ – womit nicht ein Produkt des Konzerns angesprochen ist – für nicht akzeptabel zu hal- ten16. Parlamentspräsidenten als Politiker mögen zwar die Aufgabe, gegen Kollegen vorzu- gehen, scheuen, was im Prinzip nachvollziehbar ist. Dies kann aber kein Grund sein, demo- kratisch nicht tolerables Verhalten folgenlos zu stellen – sieht man von der eventuell drohenden Nichtwiederaufstellung bei der nächsten Wahl ab. STORY OF THE PLAY The play tells the true story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor who led the resistance to Hitler in the German church. Narrated by Eberhard Bethge, his personal friend, companion and biographer, the play follows Bonhoeffer from his years as a seminary professor in northern Germany, through the turbulent challenges presented by Hitler’s efforts to seize and wield power in both the state and the church. Bonhoeffer is seen leading his students to organize an underground seminary, to distribute clandestine anti-Nazi literature, and eventually to declare open public defiance of Hitler’s authority.
