In Defense of Rap Music: Not Just Beats, Rhymes, Sex, and Violence THESIS Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Master of Arts Degree in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Crystal Joesell Radford, BA Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Thesis Committee: Professor Beverly Gordon, Advisor Professor Adrienne Dixson Copyrighted by Crystal Joesell Radford 2011 Abstract This study critically analyzes rap through an interdisciplinary framework. The study explains rap‟s socio-cultural history and it examines the multi-generational, classed, racialized, and gendered identities in rap. Rap music grew out of hip-hop culture, which has – in part – earned it a garnering of criticism of being too “violent,” “sexist,” and “noisy.” This criticism became especially pronounced with the emergence of the rap subgenre dubbed “gangsta rap” in the 1990s, which is particularly known for its sexist and violent content. Rap music, which captures the spirit of hip-hop culture, evolved in American inner cities in the early 1970s in the South Bronx at the wake of the Civil Rights, Black Nationalist, and Women‟s Liberation movements during a new technological revolution. During the 1970s and 80s, a series of sociopolitical conscious raps were launched, as young people of color found a cathartic means of expression by which to describe the conditions of the inner-city – a space largely constructed by those in power. Rap thrived under poverty, police repression, social policy, class, and gender relations (Baker, 1993; Boyd, 1997; Keyes, 2000, 2002; Perkins, 1996; Potter, 1995; Rose, 1994, 2008; Watkins, 1998).

Producer/Director Gunther Kutsch & Ira Bruggmann - Jean Luc Young Here's a nice release that we've enjoyed watching. Since it started back in 1984, Jamaica's Sting Festival, "The Greatest One-Night Reggae Show on Earth", has established itself as the Island's premier one-night reggae show. Held each year in Portmore, Sting is renowned as being a showcase for the best reggae acts, primarily dancehall, which Jamaica has to offer. Its performers invariably rise to the occasion and it has witnessed many memorable performances over the years. This 2-disc DVD set recorded live in Portmore, St. Catherine, Jamaica on December 27, 2003 features vital dancehall acts like Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Vybz Kartel, Assassin, Bling Dawg and Wayne Marshall. There's also a good part filled with reggae vocalists such as Junior Kelly, Sanchez, Anthony B and the German reggae vocalist Gentleman. Rumor has it that the most bottles, clashes and gunshots "rained" at Sting 2003! Fact is that the concert was brought to a dramatic and premature end following an on-stage brawl between the often-controversial 1 of 3 3/30/2009 3:18 PM Review - DVD - Sting Jamaica 2003 http://www.reggae-vibes.com/rev_dvd/sting2003.htm Ninjaman and Vybz Kartel, who subsequently both made up. :::::: Pum Pum Rule Jamaican Dance: An Analytic Response to the Inability to Recognize Female Sovereignty in Dancehall Leslie-Ann Fullerton “All I want to be is a Jamaican Dancehall Queen. If this is not possible, I will be satisfied writing about women in Jamaican dancehall.” - Leslie-Ann Fullerton. Leslie-Ann Fullerton was born and raised in a Christian home in Jamaica. She later became a dedicated lover and participant of Jamaican dancehall as a dancehall “mogela” [model], which played an instrumental role in informing this essay. Leslie-Ann is currently a 4th year student at the University of Toronto pursuing a double major in Caribbean Studies and Political Science. She was the 2012-2013 president and is currently the 2013-2014 Co-President of CARSSU. In reading this essay, Leslie-Ann hopes that the reader takes the advice of Chimamanda Adichie and beware of “The Dangers of Telling a Single Story” about a people and its culture. She implores the reader to look at women in Jamaican dancehall from a positive perspective. Jamaican music has had a close relationship with expressing the island’s various socio-economic and political stages. In Chude- Sokeis’s work, POST-NATIONALIS GEORGRAPHIES: Rasta, Reggae, and Reinventing Africa,1 the author traces Jamaica’s societal changes through music. This includes analyzing the relationship between post-nationalism, Rastafarianism, Dancehall, and women response to these phenomenon. Particularly, the emergence of dancehall introduced a rise African women participating in overt sexual expressions that was considered indecent. In this light, dancehall was rejected by the “ideological underpinnings of the elite culture”2 and their desires to mold nationalism in Jamaica into a replica of European model.

  • The Riddim Method: Aesthetics, Practice, and Ownership in Jamaican Dancehall1
Popular Music (2006) Volume 25/3. Copyright © 2006 Cambridge University Press, pp. 447–470 doi:10.1017/S0261143006000997 Printed in the United Kingdom The riddim method: aesthetics, practice, and ownership in Jamaican dancehall1 PETER MANUEL† and WAYNE MARSHALL‡ †127 Park Ave, Leonia, NJ 07605, USA ‡88 Holworthy Street, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA Abstract The Jamaican system of recording and performance, from the 1950s to the present, constitutes a distinctive approach to notions of composition, originality and ownership. Emerging from a tradition of live performance practice mediated by (and informing) sound recordings, the relative autonomy of riddims and voicings in the Jamaican system challenges conventional ideas about the integrity of a song and the degree to which international copyright law applies to local conceptions, as enshrined in decades of practice, of musical materials as public domain. With the spread of the ‘riddim method’ to the sites of Jamaican mass migration, as evidenced by similar approaches in hip hop, reggaeton, drum’n’bass and bhangra, reggae’s aesthetic system has found adherents among artists and audiences outside of Jamaica. This paper maps out, through historical description, ethnographic data, and musical analysis, the Jamaican system as a unique and increasingly influential approach to music-making in the digital age. The advent of commercial, mass-mediated popular music genres in the twentieth century has contributed to the spread, in many music cultures worldwide, of a certain conventional ‘mainstream’ form of song, comprising an original, autonomous and reproducible entity with a relatively unique integration of lyrics, melody and chordal accompaniment. In mainstream Western music culture, the thirty-two-bar AABA structure, perhaps repeated twice or thrice with some sort of variation, constituted a quintessential type of this conventional song form.

  • Prejudice and Homophobic Violence in Jamaica
FOR LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER HUMAN RIGHTS F ALL:2004 WHAT HAPPENED TO “ONE LOVE”? PREJUDICE AND HOMOPHOBIC VIOLENCE IN JAMAICA In May 2004, Amnesty International issued a report documenting a serious pattern of homophobic violence in Jamaica. The violence ranges from vigilante attacks to torture and ill-treatment by police. And there appears to be little or no accountability for these human rights abuses. Exhortations to kill and maim lesbian and gay people can even be found in the lyrics of a number of popular Jamaican dancehall artists, such as Bounty Killer, Beenie Man, Buju Banton—a radical departure from Reggae’s musical tradition of preaching “one love” and social justice. Amnesty has called on the Jamaican government to institute law reform and other steps to protect the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Jamaicans from discrimination and violence. The brutal murder in June of Brian Williamson, prominent gay activist and a founding member of J-FLAG (Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All-Sexuals & Gays), and the recent campaign by some LGBT activists calling for the boycott of those Jamaican Reggae stars spouting hate lyrics ignited intense public debate and media interest. In this issue, we talk to the program manager of J-FLAG about the situation for the LGBT community in Jamaica, and what he thinks can be done to address discrimination and violence against LGBT people. We are withholding the name of our interviewee to honor his request to remain anonymous due to fear for his own safety. UTfront: Give us a sense of the conditions of LGBT rights in Jamaica.

  • King Jammy Presents Dennis Brown. Tracks of Life
KING JAMMY PRESENTS Dennis Brown | Tracks of Life A Hero Among Them. On July 1st 1999 Dennis Emanuel Brown, dubbed the Crown Prince of Reggae Music died in Kingston Jamaica and on July 17th he would be laid to rest at the National Heroes Park, a very fitting resting place for a man who’s name would live on forever in the hearts of music lovers for generations to come. Dennis Brown is said to have in excess of 85 albums in his catalog, some of which were released posthumously, music that has become the sound track to the lives of many. Arguably the greatest ever. Blasphemy Again! or is it? new releases were available and was greeted by a beautiful vinyl Dennis Brown is arguably the greatest vocalist Jamaica has album with a 45” record attached to it and the title had me produced and a phenomenal questioning my sensibilities. It read “KING JAMMY PRESENTS: songwriter. It is with deep DENNIS BROWN. Tracks of life”. I asked myself, a new Dennis reverence that his name is Brown album, blasphemy again! or is it? spoken and songs like “Should Curiosity wouldn’t let me walk away I”, “Revolution” and “Here I Come” are as synonymous with without taking a closer look and of course it’s a King Jammy’s Jamaica as are the colors production, that’s validation enough. As I scanned the track listing, I Black, Green and Gold, so was surprised to see it was an album of features, but the choice of whenever true fans hear of collaborators were surely easing my fears.
