Paerata Patumahoe Mauku Pukekohe Puni Pokeno Tuakau Aka Aka Te ohanga newhero Pukekawa New Zealand’s Food Story The Pukekohe Hub Prepared for Horticulture New Zealand August 2018 Foreword Horticulture is one of the success stories of New Zealand’s primary industries. In 2017, the industry generated $5.68 billion in value. Export revenue has grown nearly 50% in five years, illustrating the trust the world places in New Zealand-grown food, and the country’s ability to meet that demand. But the industry cannot rest. New Zealand faces opportunities with a growing population and the need to grow fresh produce. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Auckland, and its surrounding rural land. The population is set to rise to 2.3 million by 2043, straining natural resources and infrastructure. And growers are feeling that pressure. The Pukekohe growing hub straddles the Auckland and Waikato District boundaries, and it is key to sustaining the fresh food supply to the country’s largest city. The squeeze on prime growing land in the Pukekohe hub, access to water, and the tensions between the existing industry and new neighbourhoods all mean a more considered and concerted approach to planning is needed. It is the right time to start the conversation about New Zealand’s sustainable food supply with a focus on a growing area experiencing change. Our economic analysis suggests that, over the next 25 years, the Pukekohe hub could face constrained horticulture production. If left unchecked, less production could result in lost economic value, higher prices for customers, and job losses for the industry itself and the sectors it supports. -

Geophysical characterisation of the Onewhero and Kellyville volcanic complexes, South Auckland Volcanic Field A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Science in Earth and Ocean Sciences at The University of Waikato by Kevin Joseph Chase Mullane _________ The University of Waikato 2015 Abstract The Quaternary-aged (1.59 – 0.51 Ma) intraplate, monogenetic, basaltic South Auckland Volcanic Field consists of at least 82 volcanic centres that span an area of 300 km². This study focusses on the volcanic and sedimentary histories of the Onewhero and Kellyville maars, interpreted from additional geological observations, which build upon previous geological studies, and gravimetric and magnetic surveys. New geological observations of the Onewhero maar reveal the presence of diatomaceous sediment, and at least one lava flow, that probably originated from the nearby Klondyke cone to the south, and which occupies a significant area of the crater floor. -

Ngā Tātai Kōrero i Te Kauwhanganui ki Rukumoana A Summer Internship Funded by Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga By Lydia Waharoa (Supervisor: Dr. Mike Ross, Victoria University) 1 Project Aims To research, collect, catergorise and compile material to produce a Booklet for the 2017 Centenary of Te Kauwhanganui ki Rukumoana. To Explore National archives collection and the National Library in Wellington To provide a summary of literature centred around Tupu Taingakawa and Te Kauwhanganui 2 Māori have always had strong connections with the land and out of this arose the struggle for mana whenua and mana motuhake. This paper explores and researches the historical and political context surrounding the establishment of Te Kauwhanganui ki Rukumoana to the present day. Research is made regarding the people who were instrumental in its establishment, how it came to be, its development and the Māori political movements of the time. This paper focuses on Tupu Taingakawa whose upbringing and political career weaves through the Kīngitanga and the Te Kauwhanganui, spanning many decades and changes. He was Te Kauwhanaganui’s first Tumuaki of the House, a strong and ardent supporter of the Kīngitanga movement and instrumental in the building of the Te Kauwhanganui ki Rukumoana. Historical Socio-Political Context In the 1800’s, British colonial threats to Māori sovereignty guaranteed by the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 triggered a series of negative and exploitive events in a short period of time. The increasing number of British settlers were operating in direct competition with the Crown and the growing demand to purchase Māori land led to political and legislative marginalisation of Māori iwi and hapū (Papa and Meredith, 2015). -

British Logistics in the New Zealand Wars, 1845-66' A thesis presented in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy . In History at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand Richard J. Taylor 2004 Abstract While military historians freely acknowledge the importance of logistics - the function of sustaining armed forces in war and peace - the study of military history has tended to focus on other components of the military art, such as strategy, tactics or command. The historiography of the New Zealand Wars reflects this phenomenon. As a result, the impact of logistics on the Wars remains largely unexplored and misunderstood. The British superiority in numbers, materiel and technology has been one of the most consistent and enduring themes in the historiography of the New Zealand Wars. Although more recent, revisionist histories have also highlighted the impact of Maori military prowess as a factor, interpretations of the course and outcome of the Wars are still dominated by accounts which stress the numerical and technological superiority of the British Army as critical. There are several problems with this approach. At its most basic, it ignores the historical reality that small, poorly-equipped forces have occasionally defeated larger and better equipped opponents. More importantly, it fa ils to take into account wider British strategy in New Zealand, and events that took place offthe battlefield, such as the provision of the logistical services that did much to shape the outcome. -

Michael Ross A Thesis submitted to Auckland University of Technology In fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) January 2015 1 Abstract Waikato-Tainui people are descended from an adventurous people who took calculated risks to sail from their warm Polynesian isles to a new land they named Aotearoa1. These new migrants established a society which over time became distinctly Māori as they adapted to their new environment. Their greatest survival tool was their tikanga (important values and protocols), handed down to each generation through legends and practices remembered and recited in the daily activities of community, and given prominence at important tribal rūnanga, gatherings to discuss, debate and consult tribal members about progress, reporting and strategy. These values and protocols which guided cultural relationships included an unshakeable belief in the tapu (spiritual and physical boundaries) which resided in every object, animal, plant and natural phenomenon which could be seen or experienced. It was from tapu, emanating from the atua, that all things and all people gained their power and their position, their mana, in the universe. Mana was something which could wax and wane depending on the success or failure of ventures. Where actions threatened the mana and stability of hapū or whānau, or might give offence to the atua, utu (a reciprocal action) was required to restore balance and achieve harmony once more. -
