Brass and woodwind players’ routes into the music profession Helen Barlow This table is a work in progress. More subjects will be added, and the gaps in the data for existing subjects will be filled, as further information is found. The sources include Members of the Royal Society of Musicians 1738-1984, compiled by Betty Matthews (London: Royal Society of Musicians, 1985), Joseph Doane’s A Musical Directory for the Year 1794 (London: Royal College of Music, 1993), and obituaries taken primarily from English broadsheet newspapers (Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent and The Times). In the Dates column: a = ante b = born d = died c = circa fl = floruit p = post Where precise dates are not know, the decades in which the subject is known to have been active are given (e.g., 1730s-1750s fl).
