Before finishing studies at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts, where he was a pupil of Alexander Moyzes and Jan Cikker, he left for Poland to continue studying with Boguslaw Szabelski and Witold Lutostawski at the State Academy of Music (finishing in 1965). He worked in the Czechoslovak Radio in Kosice, later as the programming adviser in the Czechoslovak Television in Bratislava, since 1967 as the programming adviser of the SILK Dance and Music Company. Salva lectured at the Teacher's Training College in Nitra and he was the chairman of the Association of Slovak Composers within the Slovak Music Union. Salva's music bears characteristic features of folk music, especial ly its modal melodies, his compositions employ a free approach to rhythm and meter, stressing the diversity of sound combinations and counterpuntal layers. He wrote major works for instrumental forces, yet his horizontal thinking is more adequately highligh ted in compositions for voice, where his sonoristic endeavours are better accommoda ted. In terms of form, Salva's compositions present a sequence of discreet blocs. His contribution to Slovak music is the imaginative, emotional form of a ballad. Works (selection): 4 string quartets (1959-1988), Canticum Zachariae (1961), Concerto for clarinet, speaker, 4 male voices and percussion (1964), Concerto for cello and orchestra (1966), Requiem aeternam for tenor, speaker, children's and mixed choir, wind and percussion instruments (1967), Glagolitic Mass (1969), Burlesque (concerto) for violin and chamber ensemble (1970), Margita a Besnd, opera (1971), Ballad-Fantasy for piano, soprano and orchestra (1971), Good after noon, my dear dead for soprano and male choir on a text by MUan Rufus (1973), Magniftcus vita salutis for baritone and female choir (1974), BalladTor flute (1975), quadrophonic radio opera Tears (1977), Musica in memoriam A. • The Inspiration Behind Compositions for Clarinetist Frederick Thurston
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND COMPOSITIONS FOR CLARINETIST FREDERICK THURSTON Aileen Marie Razey, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 201 8 APPROVED: Kimberly Cole Luevano, Major Professor Warren Henry, Committee Member John Scott, Committee Member John Holt, Chair of the Division of Instrumental Studies Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Razey, Aileen Marie. The Inspiration behind Compositions for Clarinetist Frederick Thurston. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2018, 86 pp., references, 51 titles. Frederick Thurston was a prominent British clarinet performer and teacher in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the brevity of his life and the impact of two world wars, Thurston’s legacy is often overlooked among clarinetists in the United States. Thurston’s playing inspired 19 composers to write 22 solo and chamber works for him, none of which he personally commissioned. The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive biography of Thurston’s career as clarinet performer and teacher with a complete bibliography of compositions written for him. With biographical knowledge and access to the few extant recordings of Thurston’s playing, clarinetists may gain a fuller understanding of Thurston’s ideal clarinet sound and musical ideas. These resources are necessary in order to recognize the qualities about his playing that inspired composers to write for him and to perform these works with the composers’ inspiration in mind. Despite the vast list of works written for and dedicated to Thurston, clarinet players in the United States are not familiar with many of these works, and available resources do not include a complete listing.

The thyroid gland is found in the neck, below the thyroid cartilage (which forms the laryngeal prominence, or "Adam's apple"). The isthmus (the bridge between the two lobes of the thyroid) is located inferior to the cricoid cartilage. The thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes proteins, and controls how sensitive the body is to other hormones. It participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the principal ones being triiodothyronine (T ) and thyroxine which can sometimes be referred to as tetraiodothyronine (T ). These hormones 3 4 regulate the rate of metabolism and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. T and 3 T are synthesized from both iodine and tyrosine.

  • Odraz Myšlienok Jozefa Kresánka V Súčasnej Muzikológii a Estetike Slávka Kopčáková
Odraz myšlienok Jozefa Kresánka v súčasnej muzikológii a estetike Slávka Kopčáková Abstract: In this paper musicological, pedagogical and artistic dimensions of Jozef Kresánek (1913-1986), a founder of Slovak musicology and one of the most important figures of Slo- vak music culture, are analysed. In terms of a threefold unity of composer, scientist and tea- cher we try to outline his exceptional contribution to creation of Slovak music culture and to development of systematic and historical components of musicology. We exemplify his au- thentic ideas and thoughts on the aesthetics of music field, and we also emphasize his initiati- ve and his active cooperation in the formation of aesthetic education as a field of study and as a school subject at the turn of the 1960s and 1970s in Slovakia. Since Kresánek’s theoretical work and ideas are still up to date and challenging, we examine their transformation and re- flection in the current musical aesthetic thinking in Slovakia and the Czech Republic and pro- vide examples of several theoretical scientific works and professional books published in the last decade. Osobnosť Jozefa Kresánka - vklad do hudobnej kultúry V roku 2011 si pripomíname 25. výročie úmrtia významného slovenského muzikológa a hudobného skladateľa Jozefa Kresánka, jedného z budovateľov našej novodobej hudobnej kultúry a zakladateľa slovenskej hudobnej vedy.
