Nasher Sculpture Center’s Soundings Concert Honoring President John F. Kennedy with New Work by American Composer Steven Mackey to be Performed at City Performance Hall; Guaranteed Seating with Soundings Season Ticket Package Brentano String Quartet Performance of One Red Rose, co-commissioned by the Nasher with Carnegie Hall and Yellow Barn, moved to accommodate bigger audience. DALLAS, Texas (September 12, 2013) – The Nasher Sculpture Center is pleased to announce that the JFK commemorative Soundings concert will be performed at City Performance Hall. Season tickets to Soundings are now on sale with guaranteed seating to the special concert honoring President Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his death with an important new work by internationally renowned composer Steven Mackey. One Red Rose is written for the Brentano String Quartet in commemoration of this anniversary, and is commissioned by the Nasher (Dallas, TX) with Carnegie Hall (New York, NY) and Yellow Barn (Putney, VT). The concert will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 7:30 pm at City Performance Hall with celebrated musicians; the Brentano String Quartet, clarinetist Charles Neidich and pianist Seth Knopp. Mr. Mackey’s One Red Rose will be performed along with seminal works by Olivier Messiaen and John Cage. An encore performance of One Red Rose, will take place Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2 pm at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Both concerts will include a discussion with the audience. Welcome Anthea Kreston! The Artemis Quartet welcomes its new member Berlin, 18 January 2016 In the past six months, amidst mourning the death of Friedemann Weigle, the Artemis Quartet also came to the decision of continuing its work as an ensemble. Now, the Artemis Quartet is pleased to announce its new member: the American violinist Anthea Kreston, who will take over the second violin position with immediate effect. In a musical chairs scenario, Gregor Sigl will assume the viola position in the quartet. Andrea Kreston, born in Chicago, studied with Felix Galimir and Ida Kavafian at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, as well as chamber music with the Vermeer Quartet and Emerson String Quartet. Anthea Kreston was a member of the Avalon Quartet - with whom she won the ARD Competition in 2000 - for seven years. In 1999, she founded the Amelia Piano Trio. She has given many concerts in the United States and Europe with both ensembles. Eckart Runge and Anthea Kreston have known each other for twenty years. They met, as members of different ensembles, at a masterclass given by the Juilliard String Quartet. Eckart Runge: “Already then, Anthea struck me as an extraordinarily brilliant musician and someone who has a big personality. She applied for the available position, travelled to the audition from the West Coast [of the United States] and impressed us with her warm-heartedness, boundless energy and - above all - her fantastic qualities as a musician and violinist. National Endowment for the Arts Annual Report 1996
TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES: It is my pleasure to transmit herewith the Annual Report of the National Endowment for the Arts for the fiscal year 1996. One measure of a great nation is the vitality of its culture, the dedication of its people to nurturing a climate where creativity can flourish. By support ing our museums and theaters, our dance companies and symphony orches tras, our writers and our artists, the National Endowment for the Arts provides such a climate. Look through this report and you will find many reasons to be proud of our Nation’s cultural life at the end of the 20th century and what it portends for Americans and the world in the years ahead. Despite cutbacks in its budget, the Endowment was able to fund thou sands of projects all across America -- a museum in Sitka, Alaska, a dance company in Miami, Florida, a production of Eugene O’Neill in New York City, a Whisder exhibition in Chicago, and artists in the schools in all 50 states. Millions of Americans were able to see plays, hear concerts, and participate in the arts in their hometowns, thanks to the work of this small agency. As we set priorities for the coming years, let’s not forget the vita! role of the National Endowment for the Arts must continue to play in our national life. The Endowment shows the world that we take pride in American culture here and abroad. It is a beacon, not only of creativity, but of free dom. And let us keep that lamp brightly burning now and for all time. -

Yet this is a true chamber partnership, with K454 demanding a violinist of consummate skill. The opening commences with a stately Largo; it quickly retreats into a tender statement before launching into a swift Allegro with many conversational imitations and parallel lines. An Andante follows in which Mozart achieves a masterly blend of cantabile and beauty. A minor episode darkens the mood while maintaining enchanting lyricism. The concluding movement opens with a statement first spoken by the violin, with intervening episodes sandwiched between reprises of the theme giving opportunities to express Mozart’s penchant for unexpected and delectable melodic twists and turns. Night Flight was originally written as the fourth movement from a sextet called Mephisto in 1990. Ukranian violinist Dmitri Tkachenko commissioned this transcription and debuted it with Kristian Chong in London in 2003. The piece is a danse macabre for the modern age.
