S. J. Sparks F.R.S. The Prestwich Medal is given for major contributions to earth science, and provides an opportunity for the Society to recognise achievements in areas that can lie outside the terms of reference of its other awards. This year, the Prestwich Medal has been given to Mary Fowler for the contribution of her book, The Solid Earth, which has had an enormous impact. The book has been acclaimed by today’s leading geophysicists. There is consensus that, although there are many books covering various aspects of geophysics, there are only a small number that can be seen as landmarks in the subject. Mary’s book has been compared to Jeffreys’s The Earth and Holmes’s Physical Geology. The Solid Earth is recognised by her peers as a monumental contribution. In this book she displays a wide knowledge of a very broad range of geological and geophysical topics at a very high level. The book provides a balanced and thoroughly researched account which is accessible to undergraduates as well as to active researchers. The book has been described as one of the outstanding texts in modern earth sciences. M. R. Fowler Frontmatter More information Preface to the first edition Geophysics is a diverse science. At its best it has the rigour of physics and the vigour of geology. Its subject is the Earth. How does the Earth work? What is its composition? How has it changed? Thirty years ago many of the answers to these questions were uncertain. We knew the gross structure of our planet and that earthquakes occurred, volcanoes erupted and high mountains existed, but we did not understand why. Today we have a general knowledge of the workings of the planet, although there is still much to be discovered. My aim in writing this book was to convey in a fairly elementary way what we know of the structure and dynamics of the solid Earth. The fabric of geophysics has changed dramatically in the decades since the discovery of plate tectonics. The book places a strong emphasis on geophysical research since the initial formulation of plate theory, and the discussion centres on the crust and upper mantle. It also outlines the recent increases in our knowledge of the planet’s deeper interior. To whom is this book addressed? It is designed to serve as an introduction to geophysics for senior undergraduates in geology or physics and for graduate students in either subject who need to learn the elements of geophysics. My hope is that the book will give them a fairly comprehensive basis on which to build an understanding of the solid Earth. Part of the challenge in writing a geophysics text is to make the book accessible to both types of student. For instance, some students enter the study of geophysics from a background in the Earth sciences, others from physics or mathematics: only a few enroll directly in geophysics programmes.

Sir Harold Jeffreys denied that there was a fit, but Sir Edward Bullard considered the fit to be impressive. Bullard suggested quantifying the fit to Jim Everett, a graduate student at the time. Everett did so, developing his own method from his mathematical background, and computed the fit for the South Atlantic. Alan Smith, then a research assistant, used his geological knowledge and worked with Everett to fit together all the circum-Atlantic continents. Thus Bullard had the idea of quantifying the fit, and Everett and Smith implemented it. Then Smith extended the method to fits beyond the Earth Sciences History Atlantic. The outcome owed much to Bullard’s leadership, and to the lively v. 27, no. 1, 2008 and open discussions that prevailed during coffee and tea at Madingley pp. Rise, which housed the Department of Geodesy and Geophysics of the University of Cambridge at that time. 1. At the turn of the 20th cen- tury, Austrian geologist Eduard Suess proposed the theory of Gond- wanaland to account for these similarities: that a giant supercontinent had once covered much or all of Earth’s surface before breaking apart to form continents and ocean basins. A few years later, German meteo- rologist Alfred Wegener suggested an alternative explanation: conti- nental drift. The paleontological patterns and jigsaw-puzzle fit could be explained if the continents had migrated across the earth’s surface, sometimes joining together, sometimes breaking apart.

    Memorial to Edward Crisp Bullard 1907-1980 J. TUZO WILSON Department of Physics, University of Toronto Toronto, Canada Sir Edward Bullard, a professor of geophysics at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and former professor of geodesy and geophysics at Cambridge, was one of the most brilliant and successful geophysicists of this century. His quick mind, his warm and generous personality, and his keen sense of humor made him a natural leader and teacher; he attracted many friends and admirers, all of whom knew him as Teddy. With their help, he broadened the long tradition of theoretical study of physics of the earth at the University of Cambridge into an outstanding program of both experimental and theoretical geophysical research. He made notable contributions to the study of gravity, geomagnetism, and heat flow; his work also enhanced our knowledge and improved computational methods in most branches of physics of the solid earth, including studies of the ocean floors, seismology, and age determinations. He was born on September 21, 1907, at Norwich, England, where his family had for three generations owned and operated a brewery. His grandfather, Sir Harry Bullard, had been mayor of Norwich and twice elected to Parliament. On the first occasion, as Teddy Bullard was fond of relating, Sir Harry had been refused his seat on account of election irregularities, but after waiting the statutory ten years, he ran again and was re-elected. His father succeeeded to the family business but, although kindly, he was argumentative and dyslexic; dyslexia also slightly affected Teddy in his youth. Thus, Teddy’s early life was unhappy except for summer visits to a large country house that his maternal grandfather, Sir Frank Crisp, had built near Henley.

    Appendix A Seismological Monitoring of the World’s First Nuclear Detonation— The Trinity Shot of 16 July 19451 Seismology played a modest role in the Trinity test, thereby establishing, at the very birth of the “atomic age,” a mutual interaction between seismology and nuclear testing that would become of increasing significance to both technologies as the century pro- gressed. Because the Trinity “gadget” was designed to be an atmospherically detonated military weapon for which principal damage effects were expected to be air blast and accompanying ground shock of intensities heretofore unexplored, extensive new effects data were needed to plan military applications. When the need for a full-scale test of the implosion design became clear by late 1944, Los Alamos scientists began to devise field experiments to measure both air blast and ground shock.Also, they wanted to esti- mate how each would scale with explosive energy release (yield), range, and height of burst within a principal target area (nominally, within about 20 km of ground zero). In March 1945, Herbert M. Houghton, an exploration geophysicist with Geophys- ical Research Corporation (GRC) and Tidewater Oil, was recruited to work with Los Alamos physicist, James Coon, to perfect earth shock instrumentation for the 100-ton TNT calibration rehearsal shot of 7 May 1945, as well as the unique multikiloton Trin- ity nuclear event planned for July. Houghton and Coon modified a dozen GRC Type SG-3 geophones to record both vertical and horizontal-radial components of strong ground motion at ranges between 0.75 and 8.2 km from both the calibration and nuclear shots, which were air bursts suspended on towers.

The collection documents Munk's scientific career and some of the subject areas where he was an influential theorist, including wave forecasting and acoustic tomography. It includes: correspondence; an incomplete assortment of Munk's writings and lectures; collaborative research with Harald Sverdrup and the U.S. Navy on wave forecasting during World War II, including drafts of reports and photographic prints of waves and coastlines; Munk's files from government consulting (JASON and the National Research Council); and Munk's papers on UC San Diego, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP).
