Back Brian Barrow, Vince Lawford, Keith Tipping, Stuart Willis, Roger Edge, Percy Woods 237 CHAPTER 1 Ocean Science and the British Cold War State In March 1974, a one-day symposium was held at the Royal Society in London, to reflect on the effect of two world wars on the organisation and development of science in the United Kingdom.1 Listed amongst the speakers were two leading British scientists who feature prominently in this book: Edward Bullard and George Deacon. Bullard believed that important lessons taught to young scientists by the war included: how to use the Government machine, how to get one’s way with commit- tees, how to persuade people with arguments suitable to their backgrounds and prejudices and how realistically to assess the means needed for a given end.2 Following Bullard’s paper, George Deacon (the recently retired director of the National Institute of Oceanography, NIO) noted that ‘Marine

SMITH Department of Earth Sciences, Sedgwick Museum, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EQ, U.K. [email protected] ABSTRACT The first computer fit of the continents had its origins in a controversy over Warren Carey’s visual fit between South America and Africa. Sir Harold Jeffreys denied that there was a fit, but Sir Edward Bullard considered the fit to be impressive. Bullard suggested quantifying the fit to Jim Everett, a graduate student at the time. Everett did so, developing his own method from his mathematical background, and computed the fit for the South Atlantic. Alan Smith, then a research assistant, used his geological knowledge and worked with Everett to fit together all the circum-Atlantic continents. Thus Bullard had the idea of quantifying the fit, and Everett and Smith implemented it. Then Smith extended the method to fits beyond the Earth Sciences History Atlantic. The outcome owed much to Bullard’s leadership, and to the lively v. 27, no. 1, 2008 and open discussions that prevailed during coffee and tea at Madingley pp. Rise, which housed the Department of Geodesy and Geophysics of the University of Cambridge at that time. 1. INTRODUCTION Bullard, Everett and Smith’s (1965) computer fit of the circum-Atlantic continents has become something of a geophysical icon. It gave rise to new ideas and set new approaches in motion, whose consequences are still being worked out today.

    CHAPTER 5 Ecopath with Ecosim: linking fi sheries and ecology V. Christensen Fisheries Centre, University of British Columbia, Canada. 1 Why ecosystem modeling in fi sheries? Fifty years ago, fi sheries science emerged as a quantitative discipline with the publication of Ray Beverton and Sidney Holt’s [1] seminal volume On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations. This book provided the foundation for how to manage fi sheries and was based on detailed, mathe- matical analyses of the dynamics of individual fi sh populations, of how they grow and how they are affected by fi shing. Fisheries science has developed and matured since then, and remarkably much of what has been achieved are modifi cations and further developments of what Beverton and Holt introduced. Given then that fi sheries science has developed to become one of the most data-rich, quantita- tive fi elds in ecology [2], how well has it fared? We often see fi sheries issues in the headlines and usually in a negative context and there are indeed many threats to the sustainability of ocean resources [3]. Many, judging not the least from newspaper headlines, consider fi sheries manage- ment a usual suspect in connection with fi sheries collapses. This may lead one to suspect that there is a problem with the science, but I hold this to be an erroneous conclusion. It should be stressed that the main problem is not to be found in the computational aspects of the science, but rather in how management advice actually is implemented in praxis [4]. The major force in fi sh- eries throughout the world is excessive fi shing capacity; the days with unexploited resources and untapped oceans are over [5], and the fi shing industry is now relying heavily on subsidies to keep the machinery going [6].

At the turn of the 20th cen- tury, Austrian geologist Eduard Suess proposed the theory of Gond- wanaland to account for these similarities: that a giant supercontinent had once covered much or all of Earth’s surface before breaking apart to form continents and ocean basins. A few years later, German meteo- rologist Alfred Wegener suggested an alternative explanation: conti- nental drift. The paleontological patterns and jigsaw-puzzle fit could be explained if the continents had migrated across the earth’s surface, sometimes joining together, sometimes breaking apart.
