Mohd Hazmi bin Mohd Rusli 14 February 2012 i ABSTRACT The importance of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore for the global shipping industry and world trade can’t be underestimated. In 2010, these routes were navigated by more than 74,000 vessels of various types. If the Straits were to be closed to navigation, global trade would be adversely affected, thus, injuring the world’s economy. Issues relating to the marine environment of these Straits have always been contentious. The littoral States may enforce marine environmental protection measures to protect the straits under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982 (LOSC), but their powers are limited by the application of internationally accepted regulations. The national laws of the littoral States governing safety of navigation and control of vessel-source pollution must correspond to the LOSC and other International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions that the littoral States have ratified. This situation makes it difficult for them to effectively manage the marine environment of these shipping routes. Issues relating to vessel-source marine pollution are endemic in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore and with the projected increase of shipping traffic in future years, current protective measures may not be entirely sufficient to safeguard the marine environment of these waterways. This Thesis examines the potential environmental protective measures that the littoral States may, either collectively or individually, adopt in the future. Current and future alternative routes to the Straits of Malacca and Singapore for shipping traffic to use are also identified.     ‹ Countries South China Sea Last Updated: February 7, 2013 (Notes) full report Overview The South China Sea is a critical world trade route and a potential source of hydrocarbons, particularly natural gas, with competing claims of ownership over the sea and its resources. Stretching from Singapore and the Strait of Malacca in the southwest to the Strait of Taiwan in the northeast, the South China Sea is one of the most important trade routes in the world. The sea is rich in resources and holds significant strategic and political importance. The area includes several hundred small islands, rocks, and reefs, with the majority located in the Paracel and Spratly Island chains. Many of these islands are partially submerged land masses unsuitable for habitation and are little more than shipping hazards. For example, the total land area of the Spratly Islands encompasses less than 3 square miles. Several of the countries bordering the sea declare ownership of the islands to claim the surrounding sea and its resources. The Gulf of Thailand borders the South China Sea, and although technically not part of it, disputes surround ownership of that Gulf and its resources as well. Asia's robust economic growth boosts demand for energy in the region. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projects total liquid fuels consumption in Asian countries outside the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to rise at an annual growth rate of 2.6 percent, growing from around 20 percent of world consumption in 2008 to over 30 percent of world consumption by 2035. Similarly, non-OECD Asia natural gas consumption grows by 3.9 percent annually, from 10 percent of world gas consumption in 2008 to 19 percent by 2035.

    BALANCING by Maritha Pottenger A balancing bid occurs when you are in the pass-out seat and an opponent has opened the bidding. Often, it is advisable to bid—hoping to buy or the contract or to push the opponents to a higher level where they might go set. If your LHO opens a suit, partner passes and RHO passes, most of the time your side will have 19-24 HCP and the opponents will have 16-21 points. (LHO could have as few as 11-12 HCP and RHO could have zero, but 13-17 is more likely for LHO and 2-5 for RHO.) You are bidding some of your partner’s values when you balance. The general guideline is that you will have a King less (3 fewer HCP) than you would need to make the same bid in the direct seat. The best times to balance are: 1) If you are short in the suit your opponent opened. (If you are short, partner may have length that made it harder for him/her to bid in the direct seat.) Assume partner does NOT have more than 15 HCP. If s/he did, partner would probably have overcalled one no trump. 2) You have a good 5-card or longer suit. 3) You have length and high cards in the 3 unbid suits. 4) You are not vulnerable. 5) You can bid at the same level (not have to go a level higher to make your bid). The worst times to balance are: 1) You have a very weak hand (usually less than 8 HCP) and/or a very weak suit.

The rapid increase in prices has led economists to believe that a ‘bubble’ has form in the housing market. A housing market bubble occurs when house price increases are not justified by macroeconomic fundamentals and other underlying factors (Xia and Tan 2006).

This commercial port held a golden position in the East - West-trading system in the middle ages. Besides the favorable economic conditions, this is also the place that carries many imprints of cultural interference, the place of exchange between the Eastern and Western civilizations. The multicultural imprints has clearly shown in the life, architecture and religion in Malacca city from the past to the present.
