There were new faces this year, new members for whom this was a new experience – Pete Smith, son of Tom Smith (23 Squadron), Chris and Heather, whose father Francis Jones served with 192 Squadron, and Liz Ingham, daughter of author Ron James, who recently re-published her father’s writings. All new members were made very welcome, and we do hope you enjoyed your time with us and we’ll see you next year. There were also a notable number of families who came to share the occasion … the Forsyths, the Barrons, the Dobsons, the Witts, Linda and her parents … It’s a wonderful feeling to know that the stories of those who served under Bomber Command during the war in RAF 100 Group are being passed on through generations, to remain a living memory for all who come after. -

NNAS Lecture 1st February in the Town Close Auditorium, Norwich Castle Museum. Dr Richard Maguire, Senior Lecturer in Public History, School of History, University of East Anglia, on the Cold War Anglia project. Once again the projection equipment let us down so Richard had to begin his lecture without illustrations but gallant efforts by Sophie Cabot eventually enabled the pictures to be shown. His theme was the culture of the Cold War and he gave a brief outline of the early UK weapons programme to combat the threat from Soviet Union bombers and to launch retaliatory attacks. He chose four locations to illustrate its effects on the landscape of East Anglia. (a) RAF Bawburgh nr. Norwich (b) RAF Feltwell (c) RAF Barnham nr. Thetford (d) RAF Orford Ness in Suffolk All of these were highly classified in their time, which means accurate details about them are still sketchy. Bawburgh This was a virgin site. pristine farmland, before it became part of a radar defence network, imposed by Government without being integrated into the local community. It altered centuries of agricultural use and the surrounding landscape. Whereas Bawburgh pre-WWII was in the middle of nowhere now it is adjacent to the A47 and filled in with development. The original station was part of the 1950s Rotor Radar System to modernise the United Kingdom’s radar defences. At one time 40 airforce personnel worked there but little is left except an underground bunker with a bungalow built over the top (a similar example exists at Trimmingham). Feltwell The airfield was part of a network built in the late 1930s with a curved array of hangers, similar in layout to many of the other RAF airfields of the period (for example RAF Marham, RAF Watton and RAF West Raynham). -

The Tornado Years
Continuing our brief history of RAF Honington, Part 4b. The Tornado Years (As mentioned last time, I had originally planned that ‘Part 4’ would include both the Buccaneer and the subsequent Tornado years but lack of time to research and space in the ‘Rag’ to tell the tale meant that I had to separate the two periods. This time we will take our delayed look at the Honington Tornados.) We concluded the previous episode of our tale when the last Buccaneer left Honington in 1984 but to ‘set the scene’ for the next phase we need to wind the clock back to the 1960’s. At that time, the United Kingdom had cancelled the procurement of the TSR2 and the US-built F-111, as previously discussed, but still needed replacements for the ageing Vulcan and Buccaneer strike aircraft. At the same time, aeronautical engineers were looking at variable-geometry, (or ‘swing-wing’), designs - as used on the F-111. These gave the manoeuvrability and cruise-efficiency of ‘straight’ wings with the speed-capability of swept wings. Britain and France had initiated the AFVG, (Anglo French Variable Geometry), project in 1965 but the French pulled out two years later. Britain continued to develop the project and sought new partners to achieve it. Whilst several other nations initially showed interest, ultimately it was only Britain, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands who, in 1969, eventually agreed to form a multi-national company, Panavia Aircraft GmbH to develop and manufacture the MRCA - or Multi-Role Combat Aircraft as it then became known. (The following year the Dutch withdrew from the project citing that the aircraft would be too complicated and technical for their needs.) The new company was owned 15% by the Italians and 42.5% each by Germany and Britain. -

The badge: ‘A sun in splendour divided by a flash of lightning’ was approved by HRH King Edward VIII in May 1936. And there were so many lovely letters written by hand amongst them that I’m still catching up … so forgive me if you haven’t yet had a reply. I promise one is on its way! I also received a card from Horsham St Faith where, each year, we gather for the final event of our Reunion each year, a very special Service of Remembrance with a village tea to follow before saying our fond farewells. The card wished members on the Association a very Happy Christmas, and every happiness for the New Year. -
