Coleman, IV This dissertation analyzes the process of state building by Qing imperial representatives and Republican state officials in Batang, a predominantly ethnic Tibetan region located in southwestern Sichuan Province. Utilizing Chinese provincial and national level archival materials and Tibetan language works, as well as French and American missionary records and publications, it explores how Chinese state expansion evolved in response to local power and has three primary arguments. First, by the mid-nineteenth century, Batang had developed an identifiable structure of local governance in which native chieftains, monastic leaders, and imperial officials shared power and successfully fostered peace in the region for over a century. Second, the arrival of French missionaries in Batang precipitated a gradual expansion of imperial authority in the region, culminating in radical Qing military intervention that permanently altered local understandings of power. This volume illustrates the plurality of approaches to studying history and current research in the making. It compiles contributions – very different in length and in style – from researchers from a variety of disciplines: linguistics, tibetology, anthropology, history, art and archaeology. Their sources include linguistics, archaeological and artistical evidence; Tibetan chronicles, Persian biographies and European travel accounts; government records and private correspondence, land titles and trade receipts; oral tradition and reminiscence of survivors' recollections. The majority of the papers were first presented at the International Association of Ladakh Studies (IALS) conferences held in 1999, 2001 and 2003, and these have been supplemented by a few additional contributions. -

I. Foundation of Jammu and Kashmir State The State of Jammu and Kashmir known for its extravagant natural beauty is the northernmost State of the Indian Union. It can be aptly described by famous farsi; couplet of Hazrat Amir Khusrau which states: Agar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, Hameen ast – o hameen ast – o hameen ast. It means if there is a paradise on earth it is this, it is this, it is this. Jammu and Kashmir which occupies an extremely strategic position on the Indian frontiers, is the only State in the Indian Union with a Muslim majority. It shares international with Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China. It is bounded on the south by Himachal Pradesh and the Punjab, on the north by Chinese Turkistan and a little of Russian Turkistan, and on the east by Chinese Tibet. On the west lies Pakistan and to the northwest, Afghanistan. Causes for the foundation -In 1846 Kashmir experienced a unique development with enduring consequences. The development was that three distinctive political, geographical and cultural entities i.e. Kashmir valley, Jammu and ladakh were merged into one political entity. At no stage in the history of the state, the three regions formed a single political entity. It was only Kashmir which claim the position of an empire and on the contrary Jammu & Ladakh were small states each under a local ruler or tributaries of powerful rulers emerged either in Kashmir or elsewhere in neighborhood. On the eve of 1846, Kashmir, Jammu as well as Ladakh were under the control of Lahore Darbar. -

Any disbursement of funds from ADB. So, I request to the Government to take necessary step to identified the said Heritage sites like temples, Monuments, forts, ponds, lakes etc.” Hon’ble Speaker : The Government of Himachal Pradesh in its endeavor to protect and preserve the rich Heritage of Himachal Pradesh has taken a leap forward in declaring/identifying its Villages, Forts, Palaces, ASI Monuments and National Park as Heritage, which are of immense importance from Heritage and tourism point of view. Till today, the Government in Tourism Department, has identified/notified the following Sites/Villages as Heritage sites:- 1. Paragpur in Tehsil Dehra of District Kangra as Heritage Village vide Notification No. Tsm-F(2)-2/1993 dated 9-12-1997. 2. Garli in Tehsil Dehra of District Kangra as Heritage Village vide Notification No. Tsm-F(1)-3/2001-I dated 7-3-2002. 3. Naggar including the Roerich Estate situated in District Kullu as Heritage Village vide Notification No. Tsm-F(1)-3/2001-I dated 18-7-2003. 4. Kalpa including its hamlets Sario and Raduley situated in District Kinnaur as Heritage Village vide Notification No. Tsm-F(1)-3/2001-I dated 22-10- 2003. 1 The Government, in the Language and Arts Culture Department, has Identified 56 Forts in 12 Districts, 36 Palaces in 11 Districts (except Bilaspur District) and 40 Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) Monuments (except Solan, Una, Kinnaur and Bilaspur Districts). -

ANCIENT MONUMENTS AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES AND REMAINS RULES 1959 CHAPTER I PRELIMINARY 1. Short title, date and commencement: (1) These rules may be called the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959. (2) They extend to the whole of India, but rules 24, 25, 27, 28, 29 and 30 shall not apply to the State of Jammu and Kashmir. (3) They shall come into force on the 15th day of October, 1959.1 1. Sikhism Reinterpreted: The rC eation of Sikh Identity Abstract The iS kh identity has been misinterpreted and redefined amidst the contemporary political inclinations of elitist Sikh organizations and the British census, which caused the revival and alteration of Sikh history. This thesis serves as a historical timeline of Punjab’s religious transitions, first identifying Sikhism’s emergence and pluralism among Bhakti Hinduism and Chishti Sufism, then analyzing the effects of Sikhism’s conduct codes in favor of militancy following the human Guruship’s termination, and finally recognizing the identity-driven politics of colonialism that led to the partition of Punjabi land and identity in 1947. Contemporary practices of ritualism within Hinduism, Chishti Sufism, and Sikhism were also explored through research at the Golden Temple, Gurudwara Tapiana Sahib Bhagat Namdevji, and Haider Shaikh dargah, which were found to share identical features of Punjabi religious worship tradition that dated back to their origins. -

It comes as a surprise to many that half the population of this region is Muslim, the majority belonging to the Twelver Shi‘i sect and living in Kargil district. This article will discuss the importance of being Ladakhi for Kargili Shias through an ethnographic account of a journey I shared with a group of cultural activists from Leh to Kargil. -

MEDIEVAL HISTORY OF PUNJAB BATTLES OF GURU GOBIND SINGH JI Battles of Guru Gobind Singh: Guru Gobind Singh assumed Guruship in 1675 when he was only nine years old.He had to fight many battes against the hill Rajas and Mughals His battles may be described under the following heads: A.Battles of the Pre-Khalsa Period(1675-1699) B.Battles of the Post-Khalsa Period(1699-1708) Battles of the Pre-Khalsa Period(1675-1699): 1.Battle of Bhangani(1688): Guru Gobind Singh fought his first battle at Bhangani(situated on the bank of river Giri)(about 10kms from Paonta)in 1688.On the one side was Guru Gobind Singh and on the other side Raja Bhim Chand of Kahlur(Bilaspur)&other hill chiefs.Guru Gobind Singh came out victorious.After this battle Bhim Chand and other Rajput Rajas became friends of the Guru. 2.Battle of Nadaun(1690): As the hill Rajas had now refused to pay annual tribute to the Mughals a force was sent against them under Alif Khan.Guru Gobind Singh sided with the hill Rajas.A battle was fought in 1690 at Nadaun(situated on the banks of river Beas,about 30kms in the south of Kangra).In this battle,Alif Khan was defeated and the Guru and his allies carried the day. Battles of the Post-Khalsa Period(1699-1708): 1.First Battle of Anandpur(1701): Two years after the creation of Khalsa(1699),Raja Bhim Chand and other hill chiefs attacked the fort of Anandpur.Guru Gobind Singh and his Sikhs offered a stout resistance.At last hill Rajas made a compromise with the Guru and later retired to the village Nirmoh.
