SET 93 - HIMACHAL PRADESH Information and Photography by Ronald M. Bernier, Professor of Art History, Department of Fine Arts, Campus Box 318, University of Colorado, Boulder, CO 80309. All slides ©AAAUM/Bernier These photographs were made as part of a research project that resulted in publication of Himalayan Towers - Temples and Palaces of Himachal Pradesh, New Delhi 110055, and they will be part of the forthcoming Himalayan Architecture, a pan-Himalayan study of architecture from the Assam foothills in the east to the heights of Pakistan's Hunza in the west. 9301. The remoteness of many unstudied villages in Himachal Pradesh is indicated by this settlement with bhandar temple storehouse in Simla District. 9302. Arki stands for traditions of the Indian plain, including Rajasthan, as they were borrowed in combination with Mughal patterns mountain kingdoms. 9303. The audience of the diwankhana or audience hall is on the upper floor of the small fortress at Arki, and its open balcony commands a fine view. The dry fresco paintings that are found on the Arki fortress walls and ceilings are lively, clear, and often have folk art directness while they also show an eagerness to borrow imported styles and illusionism. 9304. Arki battle scenes are especially fresh and lively as well as based in historical fact, with British forces appearing to be almost comical in their rigid battle formations. 9305. This floral design in the entry hall of the diwankhana is a brittle and bold variation upon Mughal patterns as it shows the band of a very local artist, no doubt. 9306.

Artistic Narration: A Peer Reviewed Journal of Visual & Performing Art ISSN (P): 0976-7444 Vol. IV. , 2013 Hindu Art of Kangra Fort Dr. Jaspal Singh Associate Professor Department of Fine Art Govt. College, Hoshiarpur (Punjab)- 146001 [email protected] Kangra (32’ 54N and 76’ 15E), the glorious kingdom of history and the present district of the state Himachal Pradesh has a rich heritage of art and culture developed and flourished particularly in its vicinity. It was ruled over by the Katoch rajput dynasty from the ancient times as the great epic Mahabharta carries the reference of its founder king Susharma Chandra who had fought against the Pandavas in Mahabharta. The Pandavas named it after Bhima as Bhim Kot (fort of Bhima). However its rule remained dominated by Katoch dynasty. In 326 BC when Alexender the Great invaded Punjab a Katoch prince was ruling this region. Kangra once was a part of the ancient kingdom Trigarta which was formerly also known as Jalandhara. During Gupta period, in the time of Harsha, the known Buddhist pilgrim Huien Tsiang visited to Jalandhar (Jalandharayana - She-Lan-To-Lo) in 643 A.D. that time Trigarta had two main provinces, major one in the plains with headquarter at Jalandhar and next in the hills with headquarter at Nagrkot or Kot Kangra (The present Kangra). He talked about its social stature and life at its bests. Mahmood Ghaznavi after defeating Hindu kings at Lahore advanced towards Kangra. Mahmood looted loads of gold and silver wealth from the Kangra fort and temple. In 1337 Raja Rup Chand lost the fort to Mohd.

  • In the Constant Struggle for Power, Forts and Fortified Settlements Were a Potent Symbol of Authority
In the constant struggle for power, forts and fortified settlements were a potent symbol of authority. Thus, in ancient India as elsewhere, forts were the measure of Monarch's strength. There are many references to Forts and fortifications in ancient and medieval literature dating from the Vedic times. The Rigveda Samhita mentions tribes living in fortifications called Pur, meaning earthworks strengthened by stone walls. The Aiteraya Brahmana refers to the three Agnis, or fires, as three forts which prevent the Asuras (demons) from disturbing the sacrifice. The Ramayana and the Mahabharata also contain account of forts, and the Puranas state that the rampart and ditch are the important elements in the fortification of a castle. Kautilya's Arthashstra gives a vivid account of the fortified city of Pataliputra, capital of the great Maurya empire, 3rd century B.C., which is supported by the subsequent excavations in the modern city of Patna. Durg is the Indian term of fort, and means difficult to trespass, signifying the importance of a strategic site, a strong wall and a moat to make it an impregnable bastion. There are six type of forts: the Dhanva Durg or desert fort; the Mahi Durg or the mud fort; the Jala Durg or the water fort; the Giri Durg or hill fort; the Vriksha or Vana Durg, or the forest fort; the Nara Durg or fort protected by men. Of these the giri Durg is considered the best, though the Mahabharata claims that the Nara Durg was the strongest because a collection of able and trusted men is a king' s greatest asset.

  • Kangra, Sirmaur, and Gorkha Rule in the West
2 Alterity and Myth in Himalayan Historiography : Kangra, Sirmaur, and Gorkha Rule in the West The decades between the Battle of Chinjhiar (1795) and the beginning of British rule (1815) mark the definitive transition of the West Himalayan kingdoms to modernity. As the warring parties at Chinjhiar resumed their individual courses, the geopolitical landscape that surrounded them underwent momentous shifts that would dramatically impact their trajectories: the EIC’s conquest of Delhi (in 1803) introduced the British as the major powerbroker south of the Sutlej River; Sikh unification under Maharaja Ranjit Singh Sandhawalia (r. 1799-1839) gradually absorbed the kingdoms north of the river into the Empire of Lahore; and the expansionist drive of Nepal under the Gorkha Shah dynasty (est. ~1559, r. c. 1768/9-2008) cast shadows over the entire region from as early as the 1790s, when the fledgling empire first crossed the Mahakali River into Kumaon. By 1803, the Gorkhas had invaded Sirmaur, traversed Bilaspur, and laid siege to Kangra. Six years later (1809), the Gorkhas quit Kangra and entrenched their hold on the hills south of the Sutlej for another five years, at which point (1814) they ceded their possessions west of the Mahakali to the EIC following defeat in the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814-16).1 While the politically fragmented elite of the West Himalayan kingdoms tackled these transitions in starkly divergent ways – Kangra as a vassal of Lahore, Sirmaur and its neighbours as EIC allies, and Bilaspur somewhere in between – its experiences of this era assumed a largely uniform narrative that became foundational to the reinterpretation of Pahari Rajput kingship and polity in the modern era.
