Yeshiva Gedolah Program YESHIVA OF GREATER WASHINGTON – TIFERES GEDALIAH YESHIVA GEDOLAH PROGRAM “The Yeshiva of Greater Washington has imbued within me the education, motivation and sense of community that is needed to becoming a Rabbi of a shul.” RABBI AVI MAMMON RAV OF CONGREGATION LIGHT OF ISRAEL, ROCHESTER, NY “YGW provided me with the balance I needed to continue learning in Yeshiva while pursuing the degree I required to be successful in the corporate environment.” MR. JORDAN BERKOWITZ ACCOUNTANT, CLEVELAND, OH “R’ Ahron’s approach on how to be mechazek each of us was custom-tailored to each individual. The advice and mussar I received from both R’ Lopiansky and R’ Reingold, privately and personally, have given me (ironically, more- so in recent years despite the fact that my time in Yeshiva was 18 years ago) the strength to continue to balance a life in a very demanding profession while not losing sight of the centrality of Limud Torah and Shmiras Hamitzvos.” DR. JOSE GREENSPON PEDIATRIC SURGEON, CHESTERFIELD, MO WELCOME WHO WE ARE AN ENVIRONMENT FOR TALMIDIM IN THEIR FORMATIVE YEARS TO THE YESHIVA GEDOLAH OF THE YESHIVA OF DEVELOP IN LEARNING GREATER WASHINGTON–TIFERES GEDALIAH is dedicated to guiding young B’nei Torah to become mature and serious talmidei chachamim. It provides an AND CHARACTER AND environment for talmidim in their formative years to develop in learning and character and to emerge with TO EMERGE WITH THE the skills and passions to be a deeply committed Torah Jew. The personal interaction with our talmidim in our close-knit environment enables each talmid to realize SKILLS AND PASSIONS TO his full potential. A major focus is placed on the talmi- dim developing and advancing their own learning skills, through structured and interactive shiurim. The shiurim BE A DEEPLY COMMITTED are challenging, emphasizing the analytical skills re- quired to develop clarity in pshat, along with identifying TORAH JEW essential points of the sugya, to produce self sufficiency in learning. Accordingly, senior talmidim are regularly encouraged to give chaburos, to challenge them to delve deeper into a sugya. Our Bekiyus Seder stresses clarity and retention of the gemara. We offer a warm and unique atmosphere in which bo- churim develop a lifelong love of learning and a passion- ate commitment to yiddishkeit. The Rebbeim develop personal relationships with the talmidim, which are es- pecially significant at the important crossroads of each talmid’s life. In addition to the regular sidrei hayeshiva, a variety of shiurim are offered in Chumash, Mussar, and Machshavah, presenting the Torah as Toras Chayim, a map for life itself. Through hadracha in these areas, our talmidim attain the tools to blossom into true Bnei To- rah. As our talmidim progress, they gain a derech halimud for iyun, an impressive repository of bekius in Shas, and an WELCOME inspired life hashkafa. WE OFFER A WARM AND UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH BOCHURIM DEVELOP A THE ROSH HAYESHIVA’S SHIURIM An integral part of each talmid’s growth in the Yeshiva Gedolah are the yesodos in learning they gain from the Rosh HaYeshiva’s regular shiurim LIFELONG LOVE and chaburos. Based on the mesorah of his rebbe Rav Nachum Partzo- vitz, zt”l, of the Mir, the Rosh HaYeshiva’s depth of understanding and OF LEARNING AND broad application of the sugyos provide bochurim with a greater view of their learning. The periodic Shiur Klali from the Rosh HaYeshiva helps to bring out to the bochurim broader points in the sugya that they may not A PASSIONATE have discussed in their daily shiur. Every bochur has a weekly opportu- nity to participate in a small chabura with the Rosh HaYeshiva, allowing each bochur to speak with him in learning, and have the chance to devel- COMMITMENT TO op a close relationship with him. In addition, the Rosh HaYeshiva often learns b’chavrusa with bochurim and is available to speak in learning and YIDDISHKEIT answer questions throughout seder. Our talmidim are privileged to be guided in hashkafa and yesodei emu- nah by the Rosh HaYeshiva in many settings throughout the week. His distinctive way of sharing insight and opening a person’s mind and per- spective is truly exceptional. The Rosh HaYeshiva gives a nightly vaad on Alei Shur, an ideal springboard for the Rosh HaYeshiva to address many of the challenges that face every yeshiva bochur. Each Friday morning the Rosh HaYeshiva gives a unique parsha shiur that lures one into the depths of Chazal, pulls out profound messages, and provides an inspira- tional and practical lesson for life. To deal with challenges in life, a Ben Torah must have a strong base of hashkafa. With this purpose in mind, the Rosh HaYeshiva gives many regular shiurim elucidating yesodei ha- Torah and Ikrei Hadas. PROGRAMS POST HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM The Yeshiva Gedolah’s first year program is specifically geared toward bochurim coming from high schools to take advantage of their forma- tive years and focus on growing in Torah. YGW has a dedicated staff of rebbeim who are experienced at developing a bochur’s potential in learning and inspiring in them an appreciation for a Torah life. The first year program includes trips and events which provide necessary outlets for the bochurim and are also designed to enhance their overall growth. The shiurim and programs have been specially crafted to meet the needs of bochurim during this all important year. COLLEGE ACCREDITATION / OPTIONS The Yeshiva is accredited through the state of Maryland and AARTS (Association of Advanced Rabbinic and Talmudic Schools) enabling us to grant a Bachelor of Talmudic Letters (BTL) degree. Our shiurim earn transferable credits that are recognized by the University of Maryland University College and various other institutions. The Yeshiva provides many opportunities for bochurim in their college endeavors, and has a dedicated advisor to help guide the bochurim through their career de- cision making. SPECIAL EVENTS The Yeshiva Gedolah provides many other activities that help convey the neshama of yiddishkeit which inspire the talmidim. On many Shab- bosim, the bochurim eat at rebbeim’s homes, helping them experience Shabbos to its fullest. Every month there is a yeshiva wide Melave Malka together with the Rosh HaYeshiva. Motzai Yom Kippur, Simchas Torah, Chanuka, Purim and Lag BaOmer have their own unique mesibos, with a ruach reflecting the particular Yom Tov. At the end of the year a Shab- baton retreat is held allowing for reflection and inspiration KOLLEL Kollel Zichron Amram is a significant asset to the Yeshiva. Kollel mem- bers serve as role models illustrating a life of serious devotion to Torah learning. They are available to talk to in Torah as well as to learn b’chavrusa with some of the bochurim. The Kollel members often host the bochurim for Shabbos meals and develop meaningful relationships with them. The Kollel also offers an opportunity for serious talmidim to continue their learning after marriage in a familiar and supportive environment during their formative family years. There is a program for Smicha that is administered by the Rosh HaYeshiva and the Rosh Kollel that has pro- duced notable rebbeim in kiruv and chinuch and rabbonim in commu- nities around the world. Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his.

  • Mattos Chassidus on the Massei ~ Mattos Chassidus on the Parsha +
LIGHTS OF OUR RIGHTEOUS TZADDIKIM בעזרת ה ' יתבר A Tzaddik, or righteous person , makes everyone else appear righteous before Hashem by advocating for them and finding their merits. Kedushas Levi, Parshas Noach (Bereishis 7:1) MATTOS ~ MASSEI _ CHASSIDUS ON THE PARSHA + Dvar Torah – Mattos Keep Your Word The Torah states (30:3), “If a man takes a vow or swears an oath to G -d to establish a prohibition upon himself, he shall not violate his word; he shall fulfill whatever comes out of his mouth.” In relation to this passuk , the Midrash quotes from Tehillim (144:4), “Our days are like a fleeting shadow.” What is the connection? This can be explained, says Rav Levi Yitzchok, according to a Gemara ( Nedarim 10b), which states, “It is forbidden to say, ‘ Lashem korban , for G-d − an offering.’ Instead a person must say, ‘ Korban Lashem , an offering for G -d.’ Why? Because he may die before he says the word korban , and then he will have said the holy Name in vain.” In this light, we can understand the Midrash. The Torah states that a person makes “a vow to G-d.” This i s the exact language that must be used, mentioning the vow first. Why? Because “our days are like a fleeting shadow,” and there is always the possibility that he may die before he finishes his vow and he will have uttered the Name in vain. n Story The wood chopper had come to Ryczywohl from the nearby village in which he lived, hoping to find some kind of employment.

  • The Role of Religious Considerations in the Discussion of Women's Combat Service—The Case Of
religions Article The Pink Tank in the Room: The Role of Religious Considerations in the Discussion of Women’s Combat Service—The Case of the Israel Defense Forces Elisheva Rosman Department of Political Studies, Bar Ilan University, Ramat Gan 5290002, Israel; [email protected] Received: 5 October 2020; Accepted: 21 October 2020; Published: 27 October 2020 Abstract: Women serve in diverse roles in the 21st century militaries of the world. They are no longer banned from combat. The presence of women on the battlefield has raised religious arguments and considerations. What role do religious arguments play in the discussion regarding women’s military service? Using media, internal publications, as well as academic articles, the current paper examined this question in the context of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF): a conscription-based military that conscripts both men and women, religious and secular, for both combat and noncombat postings. Using the case of the pilot program in the IDF attempting to integrate women in the Israeli tank corps, as well as gauging the way religious men view this change, the paper argues that religious considerations serve the same purpose as functional considerations and can be amplified or lessened, as needed. Keywords: military; IDF; female soldiers; religion and the military; religious considerations; religious women’s conscription In November 2016, the issue of integrating women in the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) tank corps began to be discussed. The Israeli national religious caricaturist Yossi Shachar published a caricature of a large pink tank, labeled “feminism”, threatening a small tank with a frightened solider inside it, labeled “the IDF” (Shachar 2016).
