Rabbi Yaakov Sadigh HEAD of SCHOOL HEBREW ACADEMY of NASSAU COUNTY, WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY
Maurice Ralph Julis Principal Training Institute Maurice Ralph Julis Principal Training Institute Maurice Ralph Julis Principal Training Institute anKeeping Eye on PTI SPOTLIGHT ON... Rabbi Yaakov Sadigh HEAD OF SCHOOL HEBREW ACADEMY OF NASSAU COUNTY, WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY CREATING MAGIC IN YOUR SCHOOL Rabbi Yaakov Sadigh is an educator whose name has become familiar to Consortium members during the last few months. He wowed principals with his Creating “Magic” in Your School presentation at the 2019 CoJDS Think Tank, offered a compelling session on creating an action plan to PTI cohort members during their Fall 2019 semester, and enhanced the August 2019 Journal of Jewish Day School Leadership with an article entitled, Is Your School the Happiest Place on Earth? The avid interest in his message comes as no surprise to those who have known Rabbi Sadigh for years and have seen the implementation of his vision at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County-West Hempstead Campuses (hanc) where he serves as Head of School. Together with Mrs. Bar- bara Deutsch, hanc’s Associate Principal, and Rabbi Michael Merrill, the Assistant Principal of the Judaic Stud- ies Department, Rabbi Sadigh has created an environment at hanc where both students and staff can thrive. Rabbi Sadigh joined hanc eight years ago and was charged with growing the school and creating a school vision. He sought to create a culture that reflected the simple values combined with the rich emphasis on education found in the welcoming West Hempstead community to which the school belongs. Additionally, Rabbi Sadigh had always been intrigued by best practices that he experienced on a trip to Disneyland, and started attending seminars at the Walt Disney Company in order to learn The Business Behind the Magic. -

I. Maot Chitim II. Ta'anit Bechorim, Fast of the Firstborns III. Chametz
To The Brandeis Community, Many of us have fond memories of preparing for the holiday of Pesach (Passover), and our family's celebration of the holiday. Below is a basic outline of the major halakhic issues for Pesach this year. If anyone has questions they should be in touch with me at h[email protected]. In addition to these guidelines, a number of resources are available online from the major kashrut agencies: ● Orthodox Union: http://oukosher.org/passover/ ○ a pdf of the glossy magazine that’s been seen around campus can be found here ● Chicago Rabbinical Council: link ● Star-K: link Best wishes for a Chag Kasher ve-Sameach, Rabbi David, Ariel, Havivi, and Tiffy Pardo Please note: Since we are all spending Pesach all over the world (literally...I’m selling your chametz for you, I know) please use the internet to get appropriate halakhic times. I recommend m yzmanim.com or the really nifty sidebar on https://oukosher.org/passover/ I. Maot Chitim The Rema (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayim 429) records the ancient custom of ma'ot chitim – providing money for poor people to buy matzah and other supplies for Pesach. A number of tzedka organizations have special Maot Chitim drives. II. Ta’anit Bechorim, Fast of the Firstborns Erev Pesach is the fast of the firstborns, to commemorate the fact that the Jewish firstborns were spared during m akat bechorot (the slaying of the firstborns). This year the fast is observed on Friday April 3 (14 Nissan) beginning at alot hashachar (i.e. -

Page 4 YOSS MEMORABLE MOMENTS Sharing the excitement .......................... Page 10 PAGE 2 MESSAGE FROM THE ROSH YESHIVA Sefer Shemos is the story of the emergence of Klal Yisrael from a small tribe of the progeny of Yaakov, to a thriving nation with millions of descendants, who accepted upon themselves the yoke of Torah. It is the story of a nation that went out to a desert and sowed the seeds of the future – a future that thrives to this very day. More than sixty years ago, my grandfather Rav Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, charged my father and mother with the formidable task, “Go to the desert and plant the seeds of Torah.” What started as a fledgling school with six or seven boys, flourished more than a hundred fold. With institutions of tefilah, and higher Torah learning, all the outgrowth of that initial foray into the desert, my father’s impact is not only eternal but ever-expanding. This year’s dinner will mark both the commemoration of those accomplishments and a commitment to the renewal, refurbishment and expansion of the Torah facility he built brick by brick in 1964. Whether you are a student, an alumnus, a parent or community member, my father’s vision touched your life, and I hope that you will join us in honoring his. -
