MESSAGE FROM THE CEO AND CHAIR OF THE BOARD

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

What a year! 2017 was filled with celebrations as Saban Community Clinic commemorated its milestone 50th anniversary. While a lot has changed over the course of the past five decades, one thing remains the same: the Clinic’s steadfast belief that health care is a right, not a privilege.

As you flip through these pages we’ll take you on a trip down memory lane, looking back on how far we have come. From a single storefront on Fairfax to three clinics providing comprehensive medical care, dental care and social services through more than 100,000 patient visits each year — the changes are significant and vital.

We hope you’ll learn something about our historical accomplishments and achievements in the past year. Some highlights from 2017 include:

• Achieved Patient Centered Medical Home Level 3 Recognition, the highest level, at all three sites!

• Our Behavioral Health department flourished with the addition of new group sessions.

• Expanded enrollment of patients in insurance programs under ACA.

• Conversion of the dispensary at the Beverly Health Center to a fully licensed pharmacy.

• A Doctor of Pediatrics was hired to help with expansion of pediatric services.

• Launched the Saban MyChart App, allowing patients to make appointments, see their lab results, send their provider a message and refill prescriptions all from their phone or computer.

We take pride in the successes highlighted in this report. We extend our deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff, Board Members, community partners, generous donors and the Friends Board for the role they all play in the continued success of the Clinic.

With all the positive changes we are making for our patients and staff, we are excited for what’s to come and look forward to expanding services in the near future to meet the growing demands of the communities we serve. Without your steadfast dedication to our mission and patients, none of this would be possible.

Thank you for your continued support,

Julie Hudman, Ph.D. Robert Broder Chief Executive Officer Chair of the Board

PATIENT STORY

Karen Sanchez PATIENT

When Karen first came to the Clinic more than two years ago, she was in a horrible state of depression and had truly lost the will to live. In fact, it took all she had to leave her home and seek medical attention for symptoms that she could no longer ignore. During her medical visit with Nurse Practitioner Ellen Olivar, Karen was sobbing uncontrollably. Noticing that Karen was in a very fragile state, Ellen offered to connect her with the Clinic’s Behavioral Health Team. It was then that Karen met Jose Albert and Rebecca Gillogly who helped to overcome her state of hopelessness and regain the will to live. “Before (I started coming to) Saban Community Clinic, I was just a shell, or a shadow of what I used to be before my Mom’s stroke and my Dad’s death. I cried everyday and struggled to make it through each day. Now with the help of Saban, slowly and gratefully, I am finding my way back out of the pain and darkness that used to overcome me. I started to remember who I am as a person, started to remember my dreams, that I still had dreams and ambitions. With the Clinic’s help, I found my strength to get up again.”

With mental health issues in her family, Karen took it upon herself to get help before it was too late. Through individual and group therapy sessions, Karen has, as she says, “learned to focus on the brighter side of life instead of the darkness.”

Karen’s gratitude extends beyond thanking the staff for everything they have done for her. You’ll often find her volunteering at Clinic events and helping in any way she can. Recently, she was even voted onto our Board of Directors as a consumer member!

PATIENT STORY

A letter of appreciation from a dental patient:

October 1, 2017

Dear Board of Directors and Partners,

I arrived at the Beverly location 12 months ago on public assistance. I [came to] the Clinic with 16 of 32 adult teeth and a chronic history of odontophobia.

Prior to meeting personnel, it was evident from the inception that this was a well organized and meticulous operation. I observed the physical environment; it was without clutter, clean and maintained contemporary equipment.

Next I met with Dr. Dastur (Dental Director). I observed her to be quiet and keen. I was surprised when she opened the interaction with pleasant small talk and continued as she evaluated the task at hand. She fostered an environment that was easy to share my dental traumas beginning in childhood. She then set down the plan of action for restoring my oral health. Her extraction work was unbelievable. I wanted to say she did nothing, except the tooth was no longer present. Needless to say no pain or swelling ensued.

GROW (General Relief Opportunities for Work) is a component of public assistance. The social worker identifies and addresses barriers to employment; for example, transportation, equipment, clothing, etc. Nowhere does public assistance address missing teeth as a barrier to employment. …Saban Community Clinic addressed that very important need for me in the form of a dental partial. The results… have been life changing.

I am receiving positive responses from employers and of course smiling!

I can attest to receiving quality health care in a caring environment at my most vulnerable state.

A. Leigh Coleman PATIENT

PATIENT STORY

Gregory Andrews PATIENT

Gregory Andrews, 56, was born and raised in Los Angeles. Gregory is a kind and reserved man, a ‘gentle giant’ if you will, towering at well over six feet tall with a smile that could brighten anyone’s day.

At any given time, well actually every day, you can find him in his car, parked right outside our Beverly Health Center. You see, Gregory is homeless and lives in his car.

Just last year, Gregory was enjoying a career as a bus driver and living a modest life in the home he inherited from his parents. A series of very unfortunate events caused him to lose his home. In addition, a back injury required surgery, leaving him disabled and out of work.

Without a place to go, he found himself on the streets. A friend introduced him to the Clinic where he now takes showers daily and receives both medical and dental care. “I am not sure where I would be today without the Clinic. It’s the only place I can come to get all my needs met. Knowing the Clinic is here for me gives me peace of mind,” says Gregory.

He has developed a wonderful relationship with Case Manager Chenelle Groomes, who has helped him enroll in Medi-Cal and actively works with Gregory on securing permanent housing. She’s not only a resource for Gregory and others like him, she provides comfort at a time when they are most vulnerable. The Clinic has become Gregory’s “safe haven,”a place he can depend on.

Suki Stone FORMER PATIENT

In 1970, after several doctors in Wisconsin were unable to diagnose some paralysis in her hand, Suki Stone headed to Los Angeles to see a specialist and have surgery. Her original plan was to stay until she recovered and then head back home. However, after falling in love with LA, Suki decided to make it her new home. With a deep passion for giving back, she began volunteering at UCLA where she met two girls with whom she shared an apartment. A few months later, Suki began to experience some health issues but did not have insurance, she didn’t know where to turn… Her roommates suggested she visit The Los Angeles Free Clinic. “I didn’t have anywhere to go and needed to see a doctor. I will never forget Dr. Gold and all the caring staff at the Clinic. They knew me. They called all of us by name. There was respect for the patients. They were all so authentic and cared about everyone who walked through the doors.” Suki Stone in 1972

This past November, Suki attended the Clinic’s 50th Anniversary Dinner Gala. She wanted to give back to an organization that helped her during a time of need. The event and specifically the videos, showcasing the Clinic’s history and a patient story, brought Suki to tears. “So much from that time has changed, but the free clinic has grown and expanded in 50 years. The morals and values are still there. They still provide exemplary medical service. They treat people with respect and don’t pass judgment. That’s what impressed me. Saban Community Clinic is just what it was then, only better. That’s something that the Clinic and all of the people that are connected to it should be proud of.”

Suki has dedicated her life to helping others. Her mission is to teach children with learning disabilities how to read. She gives back to organizations that are close to her heart, including the Clinic!

We are proud to have a lasting impact on Suki and thousands of others who walk through our doors. As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we hold dear the values and the foundation that the Clinic was built upon — healthcare is a right, not a privilege and EVERYONE deserves access to affordable, quality care.
