International Newsstream (Proquest) Accurate As of 22 September 2018 Self Study Report 1 Part II: Standard 7. Resources, Facilities and Equipment The School’s research and teaching support resources are accessible in a number of ways across a variety of platforms. The resources at the University Library and the School of Communication Library are available to all professors and Communication students. Due to the damages caused to the School’s building, the School’s library is now located at the third floor of the University Library. The collection has been relocated to the same building where the academic community has a variety of areas where they can use computers, access the Internet and study, individually or with groups. Resources to students and faculty are available onsite and online. These resources include academic search engines and on-line databases, which are available both on-site and remotely. An extensive collection of mass communication, journalism, and social sciences journals are available through these databases.     23. Baltic perspectives on the European Security and Defence Policy Elzbieta Tromer I. Introduction Given the choice between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Euro- pean Security and Defence Policy as providers of their national security, the Baltic states—Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania—look to the USA. One reason is their perception of Russia as a source of instability. Another is their lack of con- fidence in the ability of the ESDP to deal with present-day threats. Although these three states are eager to be ‘normal’ members of the European Union and thus to join in its initiatives, their enthusiasm for the EU’s development of its own military muscle is lukewarm. An EU with some military capability but without the USA’s military strength and leadership holds little promise for them. Since the ESDP vehicle is already on the move, the Baltic states see their main function as ensuring coordination between the ESDP and NATO. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania want to be ‘Atlanticists from within the ESDP’.1 The Baltic states see themselves as exposed to challenges similar to those confronting the Nordic countries: notably the challenge of the new transatlantic dynamic, which makes it almost impossible to avoid taking sides between the US and Europe on an increasing range of global and specific issues. Being torn in this way is bound to be especially painful for Scandinavian [and Baltic] societies which have strong ties of history, culture and values with both sides of the Atlantic, and which in strategic terms are relatively dependent both on American military and European economic strength.2 The Nordic countries are seen by the Baltic states as allies in this context.

    Algeria - Researched and compiled by the Refugee Documentation Centre of Ireland on Monday 24 November 2014 Information on whether the Presidential election of April 2014 was considered free and fair including if there were any voting irregularities In April 2014 a document published by The Guardian states: “Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been sworn in for a fourth term as Algeria's president after he won an election that opponents dismissed as unfair and returned to power for another five years” (The Guardian (28 April 2014) Abdelaziz Bouteflika sworn in for fourth term as Algerian president). Reuters in April 2014 points out that: “Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the independence veteran in power for 15 years, won re-election on Friday with more than 80 percent of a vote opponents dismissed as fraud to keep an ailing leader in power” (Reuters (18 April 2014) Algeria's ailing Bouteflika wins re-election). This document also states: “Benflis, a former FLN chief and once a Bouteflika ally, called the vote a fraud and refused to accept the results. But he gave little evidence and the government dismissed his claims” (ibid). The United Nations News Service in April 2014 notes: “Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today congratulated the people and Government of Algeria on the peaceful holding of recent presidential elections and encouraged them to work together to strengthen the democratic process in the country. Incumbent Abdelaziz Bouteflika reportedly won last week’s poll, garnering over 80 per cent of the votes cast in the North African nation. Packer, who was Australia‟s wealthiest citizen, was a sometime newspaper owner (mainly regional newspapers, but also the Canberra Times, 1987-89), and the principal shareholder in Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd (PBL), which runs, amongst other enterprises, the biggest stable of magazines in Australia and the Nine television network. His father, Sir Frank Packer, owned the Daily Telegraph from 1936-72 and started Channel 9 in both Sydney and Melbourne; and Kerry‟s grandfather, Robert Clyde Packer, was a newspaper manager and owner whose fortunes received a wonderful boost when he was given a one-third interest in Smith’s Weekly. On 28 December and on succeeding days, Australian newspapers gave extensive coverage to the death of Kerry Packer and its implications for the future of PBL, but especially the Nine Network.
