Another part of the updated checklist of Finnish flies is presented. This part covers the families Lonchaeidae, Pallopteridae, Piophilidae, Platystomatidae, Tephritidae, Ulididae, Coelopidae, Dryomyzidae, Heterocheilidae, Phaeomyii- dae, Sciomyzidae and Sepsidae. Eight species are recorded from Finland for the first time. The following ten species have been erroneously reported from Finland and are here deleted from the Finnish checklist: Chaetolonchaea das- yops (Meigen, 1826), Earomyia crystallophila (Becker, 1895), Lonchaea hirti- ceps Zetterstedt, 1837, Lonchaea laticornis Meigen, 1826, Prochyliza lundbecki (Duda, 1924), Campiglossa achyrophori (Loew, 1869), Campiglossa irrorata (Fallén, 1814), Campiglossa tessellata (Loew, 1844), Dioxyna sororcula (Wie- demann, 1830) and Tephritis nigricauda (Loew, 1856). The Finnish records of Lonchaeidae: Lonchaea bruggeri Morge, Lonchaea contigua Collin, Lonchaea difficilis Hackman and Piophilidae: Allopiophila dudai (Frey) are considered dubious. C. 20560-0168, USA; e-mail: [email protected] DAVID L. HANCOCK P.O. Box 2464, Cairns, Queensland 4870, Australia Abstract Tephritidae collected from New Caledonia by M.E. Irwin, E.I. Schlinger, and D.W. Webb were stud- ied and identified. The 18 species represented include 3 new species, Austronevra irwini, Ceratitella schlingeri, and Euphranta hardyi, and 6 species reported from New Caledonia for the first time. The total number of Tephritidae from the island is increased from 16 to 25. Introduction D. Elmo Hardy was one of the most prolific taxonomists to study the family Tephritidae. He pro- posed more than 460 tephritid species names, second only to E.M. Hering in this regard, and he named the most valid species (Norrbom et al., 1999a). His large monographic works and cataloging efforts on the Oriental and Australasian faunas have paved the way for continued progress by his suc- cessors. Therefore we are honored to dedicate this paper to his memory. The fruit fly (Diptera: Tephritidae) fauna of New Caledonia is poorly known. Only 15 species were recorded by Norrbom et al. (1999b), 11 belonging to the genus Bactrocera. Euphranta lemnis- cata (Enderlein) was also recently recorded by Hancock & Drew (2003). -
Arthropods Associated with Above-Ground Portions of the Invasive Tree, Melaleuca Quinquenervia, in South Florida, Usa

PRATT, MIN B. RAYAMAJHI AND TED D. CENTER USDA-ARS, Invasive Plant Research Laboratory, 3205 College Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33314 ABSTRACT Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S. T. Blake, the broad-leaved paperbark tree, has invaded ca. 202,000 ha in Florida, including portions of the Everglades National Park. We performed prerelease surveys in south Florida to determine if native or accidentally introduced arthro- pods exploit this invasive plant species and assess the potential for higher trophic levels to interfere with the establishment and success of future biological control agents. Herein we quantify the abundance of arthropods present on the above-ground portions of saplings and small M. quinquenervia trees at four sites. Only eight of the 328 arthropods collected were observed feeding on M. quinquenervia. Among the arthropods collected in the plants adven- tive range, 19 species are agricultural or horticultural pests. The high percentage of rare species (72.0%), presumed to be transient or merely resting on the foliage, and the paucity of species observed feeding on the weed, suggests that future biological control agents will face little if any competition from pre-existing plant-feeding arthropods. Voucher specimens were collected by the authors, Kahoʻolawe island Reserve Commission (KiRC) staff, Maui invasive Species Committee (MiSC) staff, and students in the MiSC Hōʻike environmental curriculum pro - gram. Most of the ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) were collected using peanut butter lures during surveys for the little fire ant ( Wasmannia auropunctata ) and were determined by either the authors or Paul Krushelnycky, University of Hawaiʻi, College of tropical Agri - culture and Human Resources (CtAHR). Non-ant specimens were determined by the authors. Vouchers are housed in Bishop Museum, Honolulu.
