Skrede1,*, T. Carlsen1, T. Schumacher1 Key words Abstract Helvella is a widespread, speciose genus of large apothecial ascomycetes (Pezizomycete: Pezizales) that are found in terrestrial biomes of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. This study represents a beginning on molecular phylogeny assessing species limits and applying correct names for Helvella species based on type material and specimens in the Pezizales university herbaria (fungaria) of Copenhagen (C), Harvard (FH) and Oslo (O). We use morphology and phylogenetic systematics evidence from four loci – heat shock protein 90 (hsp), translation elongation factor alpha (tef), RNA polymerase II (rpb2) and the nuclear large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) – to assess species boundaries in an expanded sample of Helvella specimens from Europe. We combine the morphological and phylogenetic information from 55 Helvella species from Europe with a small sample of Helvella species from other regions of the world. Little intraspecific variation was detected within the species using these molecular markers; hsp and rpb2 markers provided useful barcodes for species delimitation in this genus, while LSU provided more variable resolution among the pertinent species. We discuss typification issues and identify molecular characteristics for 55 European Helvella species, designate neo- and epitypes for 30 species, and describe seven Helvella species new to science, i.e., H. alpicola, H. alpina, H. carnosa, H. danica, H. nannfeldtii, H. pubescens and H.

Abstract: In all 143 fungal taxa collected in the years 1971 and 1974 are presented from different habitats of the Arctic and Subarctic tundra in the Keewatin and Franklin areas of N.W.T., Canada and at Fort Churchill, Manitoba. Of the 143 species reported, 122 species are new in N.W.T. and Fort Churchill. The diversity of mycorrhizal species was highest in drier lichen-moss and moss tundra heaths, and in late snow patches, the most common genera being Cortinarius, Inocybe, Hebeloma, Lactarius, and Russula. The most frequent saprobic fungi were Hygrocybe, Arrhenia, Clitocybe, Galerina some of which are bryophilous and Helvella species. In the forest tundra, numerous species typical of conifer forests were found as mycorrhizal symbionts of Picea and Larix. These collections remain the primary source of information on macrofungi in this region. MORPHO TAXONOMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL STUDIES OF MACROFUNGI OF TRANS-HIMALAYAN LADAKH Konchok Dorjey Department of Botany, EliezerJoldan Memorial College, Leh, Ladakh, India Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper gives an overview of the unique diversity of mushrooms in the cold desert of Ladakh. The paper further describes the fungal phenology pattern and substrate preference of macrofungiin the cold arid region of Ladakh. Ecological adaptation strategies of this group to overcome extreme high-altitude’s climatic conditions of freezing temperature, dryness and intense solar radiations are also discussed. While most of the reports on larger fungi are from tropical areas where the weather conditions are favourable, very few of them are reported from extreme inhospitable cold arid zones of the globe. This survey heretofore enlists 32 species of macro-fungi with discussion on fungal morphotaxonomy and ecological aspects including diversity, distribution, phenological patterns, substrate preferences and cold adaptive strategies, from the cold arid desert of Ladakh. Keywords: Mushrooms, Cold desert, Morphotaxonomy, Distribution, Phenology, Substrates, Adaptive-strategies, Ladakh. Mushrooms form a large distinct epigeous or with taxonomical and ecological discussion on 32 macrofungal hypogeous fleshy fruiting body when the climatic conditions species (Table 1). • Macrofungi of the Columbia River Basin
Report on Macrofungi of the Columbia River Basin By: Dr. Steven i. Miller Department of Botany University of Wyoming November 9,1994 Interior Columbia Basin Ecosystem Management Project Science Integration Team - Terrestrial Staff S. L. Miller--Eastside Ecosystem Management Project--l, Biogeography of taxonomic group Macrofungi found within the boundaries of the Eastside Ecosystem Management Project (EEMP) include three major subdivisions--Basidiomycotina, Ascomycotma and Zygomycotina. The subdivision Basidiomycotina. commonly known as the “Basidiomycetes”, include approximately 15,000 or more species. Fungi such as mushrooms, puffballs and polypores are some of the more commonly known and observed forms. Other forms which include the jelly fungi, birds nest fungi, and tooth fungi are also members of the Basidiomycetes. The majority of the Basidiomycetes are either saprouophs on decaying wood and other dead plant material, or are symbiotic with the living cells of plant roots, forming mycorrhizal associations with trees and shrubs. Others are parasites on living plants or fungi. Basidiomycotina are distributed worldwide. The Ascomycotina is the largest subdivision of true fungi, comprised of over 2000 genera. The “Ascomycetes”, as they are commonly referred to, include a wide range of diverse organisms such as yeasts, powdery mildews, cup fungi and truffles. The Ascomycetes are primarily terrestrial, although many live in fresh or marine waters. The majority of these fungi are saprotrophs on decaying plant debris. lMany sapronophic Ascomycetes specialize in decomposing certain host species or even are restricted to a particular part of the host such as leaves or petioles. Other specialized saprouophic types include those fungi that fotrn kuiting structures only where a fire recently occurred or on the dung of certain animals Xlany other Ascomycetes are parasites on plants and less commonly on insects or other animals.
