JUCS 4 (1+2) pp. 241–261 Intellect Limited 2017 Journal of Urban Cultural Studies Volume 4 Numbers 1 & 2 © 2017 Intellect Ltd Article. English language. doi: 10.1386/jucs.4.1-2.241_1 MARTIN LUND Linnaeus University ‘Every day is 9/11!’: Re-constructing Ground Zero in three US comics ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article analyses three comics series: writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Tony comics Harris’ Ex Machina (August 2004–August 2010); writer Brian Wood and artist Ground Zero Riccardo Burchielli’s DMZ (November 2005–February 2012); and writer Garth 9/11 Ennis and artist Darick Robertson’s The Boys (October 2006–November 2012). archifictions Taking literary critic Laura Frost’s concept of ‘archifictions’ as its starting point, the War on Terror article discusses how these series frame the September 11 attacks on New York and architecture their aftermath, but its primary concern is with their engagement with the larger social ramifications of 9/11 and with the War on Terror, and with how this engage- ment is rooted in and centred on Ground Zero. It argues that this rooting allows these comics’ creators to critique post-9/11 US culture and foreign policy, but that it also, ultimately, serves to disarm the critique that each series voices in favour of closure through recourse to recuperative architecture. The attacks on September 11 continue to be felt in US culture. Comics are no exception. Comics publishers, large and small, responded immediately and comics about the attacks or the War on Terror have been coming out ever since. Largely missing from these comics, however, is an engagement with Ground Zero; after depicting the Twin Towers struck or falling, artists and writers rarely give the area a second thought.

  • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Decapitation. Dismemberment. Serial killers. Graphic gore. Hey, Kids! COMICS!! Since the release of The Dark Knight film series and the 22 movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, comic-book characters have become wildly popular in other forms of entertainment, particularly television. But broadcast TV’s representations of comic-book characters are no longer the bright, colorful, and optimistic figures of the past. Children are innately attracted to comic-book characters; but in today’s comic book-based programs, children are being exposed to graphic violence, profanity, dark and intense themes, and other inappropriate content. In this research report, the PTC examined comic book-themed prime-time programming on the maJor broadcast networks during November, February, and May “sweeps” periods from November 2012 through May 2019. Programs examined were Fox’s Gotham; CW’s Arrow, Black Lightning, The Flash, Supergirl, DC’s Legends oF Tomorrow, and Riverdale; and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents oF S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s Agent Carter, and Marvel’s Inhumans. Research data suggest that broadcast television programs based on these comic-book characters, created and intended for children, are increasingly inappropriate and/or unsafe for young viewers. In its research, the PTC found the following during the study period: • In comic book-themed programming with particular appeal to children, young viewers were exposed to over 6,000 incidents of violence, over 500 deaths, and almost 2,000 profanities. • The most violent program was CW’s Arrow. Young viewers witnessed 1,241 acts of violence, including 310 deaths, 280 instances of gun violence, and 26 scenes of people being tortured.

  • The League Returns
Volume 11 #6 “News, reviews and opinions from the world of comics” December 2007 The League Returns League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier HC I think we can all agree that the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie wasn’t too good, but there’s a history of mediocre adap- tations of Alan Moore projects. But the truth is, the actual comics have all been excellent. If you’ve let that stop you from trying one of the best books of the last decade, it’s your loss. Seriously, go buy volumes 1 & 2, read them, love them, and then get ready for... The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Black Dossier! Many years in the making, and many months in production, the thick hard cover tome is fi nally out. Set in a dark England in the 1950s in which the League have been disbanded, it’s up to Mina Murray and Allan Quatermain to fi nd the legendary Black Dossier (the history of the League throughout the ages), before their enemies do. While not technically the third part of the League series, the Black Dossier is a full-length graphic novel, plus lots of cool DVD-style extras! Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill have outdone themselves on this one. Hopefully DC will keep it in *Editor’s note: Opps, looks print through the holiday season, but I’d like this book is sold out grab a copy now, just to be safe.* at Diamond. Better buy it now before or you’ll be left waiting!!! — Smilin’ Scott Heroes Hits Hardcover Not satisfi ed with only one thirty dollar hardcover this month, DC has also released the Heroes HC, a collection of the super-popular Heroes webcomics.

CAT-TALES SSOMETHING BBLUE CAT-TALES SSOMETHING BBLUE By Chris Dee Edited by David L. COPYRIGHT © 2002 BY CHRIS DEE ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. BATMAN, CATWOMAN, GOTHAM CITY, ET AL CREATED BY BOB KANE, PROPERTY OF DC ENTERTAINMENT, USED WITHOUT PERMISSION SOMETHING BLUE The website Tim Drake was reading was one of the stupidest exhibits of paranoia, conspiracy theories, and urban legends on, he was certain, the entire internet. But it had the best photo available of the patch of desert known as Glow Ground 51. Beneath the image of ordinary-looking wasteland that took on a greenish tint after sundown, were two vitriolic essays arguing that the land was the crash-site of alien spacecraft hidden by the government at Area 51 or else an Indian burial ground desecrated by nuclear testing in the late ’50s. Tim stared at the photos. It was neither. It was Clark Kent’s Bachelor Party. Tim didn’t know all the details. No one did, except those present, and (if they remembered) they weren’t talking. But even in Young Justice one heard things: Hal Jordon was Green Lantern then … Jagermeister … a cocktail waitress called Lola … the Golden Gate Bridge …Oliver Queen… the Space Needle… Tequila… and prominent members of the Justice League told they were no longer welcome in three West Coast cities for anything less than a nine-alarm fire. “The truth is out there!” the website proclaimed. Tim would dearly love to know what it was, now more than ever. He was 17. He was a high school junior. What did he know about planning a bachelor party? Dick said it didn’t matter.

  • Garth Ennis' Preacher and the Western
Hugvísindasvið Garth Ennis’ Preacher and the Western Or how Preacher is a western B.A. Essay Kjartan Fossberg Jónsson January 2010 University of Iceland School of Humanities Department of English Garth Ennis’ Preacher and the Western Or how Preacher is a western B.A. Essay Kjartan Fossberg Jónsson Kt.: 190386-6199 Supervisor: Úlfhildur Dagsdóttir January 2010 The comic book, as it is known today, had its beginnings in the early 20 th century. It is possible to go a long way further back and find stories told with pictures, though. The western genre has been, as with the comic book, around for a while in several mediums, from the novels of Zane Grey to films. It’s in films that the western gained its current reputation. It is, I think; fair to say that the western genre is best known through films, as the first narrative film was a western ( The Great Train Robbery (1903)). In comic books, the western genre is not really prevalent. The best known western character in comic book history is Jonah Hex, a character that has been around for decades and, as of 2009, still has a series going strong. Recent output of westerns in comic books isn’t really long. Brian Azzarello’s short lived series Loveless is an example along with the recent Jonah Hex series. Those are both westerns taking place in the mythical time of the west, the 19 th century. In 1995 Preacher started coming out, a contemporary western. This essay will deal with Preacher as western. How it is a western? What are the signs? I will make a case for Preacher being a western first and foremost.
