If you're a mob boss, hitman or hired goon, one day you're gonna end up in Punisher's War Punisher: Born by Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Paperback | Barnes & Noble® Born is a four-issue comic book limited series written by Garth Ennisillustrated by Darick Robertsonand published by Marvel Comics through the MAX imprint in Ennis announced in that he Punisher Born be writing another Punisher limited series, [2] and two years later expanded on this statement by revealing that the miniseries would be a Born prequel titled Punisher: The Platoon. The story Punisher Born told primarily through the eyes of Stevie Goodwin, a young Marine counting down the days of his service Punisher Born Frank Castle, a tough Captain with a finely honed killer instinct and survival skills who is described as being "in love with war". The story chronicles a crucial 4-day period of the platoon stationed at Firebase Valley Forge, a remote strategic outpost on the South Vietnamese - Cambodian border. Valley Forge is an outpost on its last legs; half of its Marines are addicted to heroin and its commanding officer is an apathetic alcoholic who pretends to have malaria whenever someone comes to inspect the base. Goodwin simply wishes to return home safely, and realizes that sticking close to Castle is his best option. Castle, despite being at home in the jungle, maintains Punisher Born internal dialogue with a voice that continually goads Castle into justifying his endless thirst for combat. Castle receives news that Valley Forge will be abandoned, amidst increasing Punisher Born to the war on the home front. Castle is displayed as exceptionally ruthless; first he tricks a visiting general into wandering into sniper fire for threatening to close down the base, then he drowns a member of his platoon who raped a female Vietcong sniper. Castle himself killed the Punisher Born while she was being assaulted. Another character grimly reflects that his action was the only way Punisher Born could have Punisher Born "helped", as she would have never survived captivity. Despite the news that the Firebase will soon be closed, Castle continues leading a squad on routine patrols, Punisher Born his men are thinned by sporadic ambushes by the Vietcong. By the fourth day, the attrition has left the outpost severely undermanned and outgunned. When night falls, bringing a hellish downpour, the Viet Cong and elements of the North Vietnamese Army attack the fortification, using the rain to shield themselves from air cover. Punisher Born by one, Castle's unit drops, and he finds himself surrounded and running out of ammunition for a gun about to burn out from overuse. The voice in his head becomes louder and louder until it can be heard Punisher Born the scream of the storm and roar Punisher Born the gunshots. It offers Castle the strength and stamina needed to survive, to maintain an eternal state of vigilance, and to wage a permanent war - at a price. Castle finally gives in. By the next morning, the air support has returned with an EVAC helicopter to the destroyed encampment, but are horrified to find Castle standing alone in a field of mutilated and broken VC bodies. He has suffered severe physical trauma and is bleeding from several gunshot wounds, but remains unaffected. In the next Punisher Born, Frank Castle returns home, a decorated officer on a crutch, to his Punisher Born wife, Maria and children. In the midst of the smiling return, the internal voice speaks again of the price of Castle's choice. It is exactly what Castle's eternal war will cost him, as a picture details Castle's family in a Punisher Born reticle reminiscent of the Punisher's skull icon. The voice goes on to say that it and Castle are in the same business though it has been at it for much longer and that Castle will keep it busy which implies that the voice could be the Devil or Death itself. Horrified, Castle embraces his smiling wife and eager children. To me, that whole sequence was about — it's written in that classic way where maybe it's there, maybe it's all in his head. It's more a man coming Punisher Born terms with his own fate, his own destiny, and the Punisher Born he'll walk through the world. A man being honest with himself Punisher Born who he is. At home he has the wife, the kid, the other kid on the way, meanwhile he's up to his neck in horror. He likes it, and he's coming to terms with that and admitting it. Ultimately, it's his ability to embrace this that allows him to survive and come home to his wife and kids. He's made a Punisher Born of deal with the attraction to the violence in himself that will, in a way, draw his family into that world too. THE ‘BESTLI’ OUTLAW: WILDERNESS AND EXILE IN OLD AND MIDDLE ENGLISH LITERATURE A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Sarah Michelle Haughey August 2011 © 2011 Sarah Michelle Haughey THE ‘BESTLI’ OUTLAW: WILDERNESS AND EXILE IN OLD AND MIDDLE ENGLISH LITERATURE Sarah Michelle Haughey, Ph. D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

MEDIA KIT BREAKING NEWS Rockville, MD August 19, 2019 THE BOYS by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson Coming to GraphicAudio® A Movie in Your Mind® in Early 2020 GraphicAudio® is thrilled to announce a just inked deal with DYNAMITE COMICS to produce and publish all 6 Omnibus Volumes of THE BOYS directly from the comics and scripted and produced in their unique audio entertainment format. The creative team at GraphicAudio® plans to make the adaptations as faithful as possible to the Graphic Novel series. The series is set between 2006–2008 in a world where superheroes exist. The story follows a small clandestine CIA squad, informally known as "The Boys", led by Butcher and also consisting of Mother's Milk, the French- man, the Female, and new addition "Wee" Hughie Campbell, who are charged with monitoring the superhero community, often leading to gruesome confrontations and dreadful results; in parallel, a key subplot follows Annie "Starlight" January, a young and naive superhero who joins the Seven, the most prestigious– and corrupted – superhero group in the world and The Boys' most powerful enemies. Amazon Prime released THE BOYS Season 1 last month. Joseph Rybandt, Executive Editor of Dynamite and Editor of The Boys says, “While I did not grow up anywhere near the Golden Age of Radio, I have loved the medium of radio and audio dramas almost my entire life. English language. doi: 10.1386/jucs.4.1-2.241_1 MARTIN LUND Linnaeus University ‘Every day is 9/11!’: Re-constructing Ground Zero in three US comics ABSTRACT KEYWORDS This article analyses three comics series: writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Tony comics Harris’ Ex Machina (August 2004–August 2010); writer Brian Wood and artist Ground Zero Riccardo Burchielli’s DMZ (November 2005–February 2012); and writer Garth 9/11 Ennis and artist Darick Robertson’s The Boys (October 2006–November 2012). archifictions Taking literary critic Laura Frost’s concept of ‘archifictions’ as its starting point, the War on Terror article discusses how these series frame the September 11 attacks on New York and architecture their aftermath, but its primary concern is with their engagement with the larger social ramifications of 9/11 and with the War on Terror, and with how this engage- ment is rooted in and centred on Ground Zero. It argues that this rooting allows these comics’ creators to critique post-9/11 US culture and foreign policy, but that it also, ultimately, serves to disarm the critique that each series voices in favour of closure through recourse to recuperative architecture. The attacks on September 11 continue to be felt in US culture. Comics are no exception. Comics publishers, large and small, responded immediately and comics about the attacks or the War on Terror have been coming out ever since. Largely missing from these comics, however, is an engagement with Ground Zero; after depicting the Twin Towers struck or falling, artists and writers rarely give the area a second thought.

  • Creating a Superheroine: a Rhetorical Analysis of the X-Men Comic Books
CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. You would always reply to my late-night emails as soon as you could in the morning.

Following upon the events in Long Cold Dark , this arc pulls in all the loose plot threads and subplots of Ennis' entire run including the Born mini series, which opened the first of these complete collections , and delivers in an absolutely stunning way. And the only good thing I can say about it is that the great Richard Corben draws it. Appearing in the short-lived but critically-acclaimed British anthology Crisis and illustrated by McCrea, it told the story of a young, apolitical Protestant man caught up by fate in the violence of the Irish 'Troubles'. Another very clear five stars piece to close this truly epic run. There's a good sense of bookends here that marks the end of Ennis' work on the character, I'm interested in seeing where future collections will go following his departure. I loved that he was former special forces and did a few tours in Vietnam. Whatever though I n the waning days of the Vietnam War Learn More. Less a Punisher story and more the author writing out his frustration about how a few rich a-holes control too much of the world.
