Roger Hodgson, einer der kreativ-komponierenden Köpfe der Gruppe, trennte sich 1983 nach den FAMOUS LAST WORDS zugunsten einer Solokarriere und tourt unermüdlich um den Globus, um mit seinen Evergreens gute Laune zu verbreiten. Dabei reduziert er die komplexen Songs oft auf eine einfache Klavier- oder Gitarrenbegleitung und: Es funktioniert! SUPERTRAMP FOR CHOIR bietet nun erstmalig fünf der bekanntesten Klassiker in Arrangements für gemischte Stimmen, teils a cappella, teils mit Klavierbegleitung. Carsten Gerlitz PREFACE The British band SUPERTRAMP has thrilled millions since the release of its album CRIME OF THE CENTURY (1974). Catchy melodies packaged in rich, colorful harmonies with sophisticated and lively band arrangements and all this produced in a timeless manner. These are songs that continue the Beatles’ legacy expertly. Roger Hodgson, one of their creative brains in composing, left the group in 1983 after the FAMOUS LAST WORDS album in favor of pursuing his own solo career and now tours tirelessly around the globe in order to spread mood of happiness with his evergreens. In the process he often reduces the complex songs to a simple piano or guitar accompaniment and: it works! SUPERTRAMP FOR CHOIR offers five of the most popular classic songs for the first time in arrangements for mixed voices, partly a cappella, partly with piano accompaniment. Chord symbols allow for an additional guitar accompaniment (12-stringed, that sounds best!). Roger’s music cannot be summarized in the notation in just a few bars. The choral arrangements presented here adhere to the original formal development. But not to worry – it is easier than it looks at first. Exactly because the melodies are so catchy and so songful. But the soft-spoken and willowy singer-songwriter, who is best known for applying his otherworldly falsetto to a string of progressive pop hits in the 1970s and '80s with his band Supertramp, seems genuinely excited that producers have asked him to be an official mentor on the show. Come August, the former Supertramp frontman, who was 19 when the band's first album was released in 1969, will be shepherding Idol's surviving singers through some of Supertramp's most beloved songs. And the near legendary songwriter admits he is curious to see how the young singers negotiate some of the trickier vocal gymnastics required to master tunes like Dreamer and Take the Long Way Home. "It will be interesting to find contestants who can sing in my register," Hodgson said. "It will be something different for me." Hodgson's appearance on Canadian Idol is another reminder of the long-term relationship the British-born musician has had with this country. Although Hodgson has lived in California since the 1980s, he says Canada's long-standing devotion to Supertramp has always made it seem like a second home. At one time, it was estimated that one in every 20 Canadians owned the band's Breakfast in America and Crime of the Century albums.

    „Take the long way home“ Supertramp-Cover-Band „Cannonball“ spielte am Freitagabend im Universum Von Nicolas Bröggelwirth Bünde. Den halben Kontinent haben sie schon begeistert. Die belgischen und französischen Musiker um den Keyboarder Walter Prevoo hinterließen in den Benelux-Staaten und Frankreich schon häufig ein begeistertes Publikum. Jetzt führt der Weg der Supertramp- Tribute-Band, die als sehr originalgetreu gepriesen wird, weiter durch Europa. Am Freitagabend waren „Cannonball“ im Universum zu Gast. Universums-Chef Dirk Kaiser hatte an jenem Abend eine neue Idee: Teilbestuhlung. Vor der Bühne konnte man nah an der Band stehen, doch im hinteren Bereich des Saales gab es noch genügend Möglichkeiten, sich auch hinzusetzen. So verteilten sich die Gäste auch zu Beginn ganz unterschiedlich. Die Bühne war vollgerammelt mit Instrumenten und Technik. „Cannonball“ bestand an diesem Abend aus Schlagzeug, Gitarre, Baß, Saxophon, zwei Keyboards und einem Sänger. Supertramp hat so viele Hits produziert, dass Klassiker wie „Logical song“ und „School“ schon sehr früh präsentiert wurden. Die Musiker hatten dabei sichtlich Spaß an ihrem Auftritt, lachten stets einander an, und das mag nicht zuletzt der Grund dafür gewesen sein, dass sie Swing, Groove, Mood und Feeling von der ersten Minute an ins Publikum transportieren konnten. Auch die sitzenden Gäste wippten mit den Füßen, Klatschten und Schnippten mit den Fingern, bisweilen sangen sie mit. Und mit dem größten Erfolg von Supertramp auf dem deutschen Markt „It’s raining again“ ging es nach kurzweiliger Zeit in die Pause. Manche mögen die Melodieverläufe einiger Supertramp-Songs als ziemlich infantil bezeichnen. Gerade bei ihren größten Hits lässt sich das schwer bestreiten, und ein einziger Sprung in eine parallele Tonart rettet die Kompositionen nicht wirklich.

    2 MIX NEW | duben 2018 Hity SUPERTRAMP zazní 27. dubna v brněnském Sono centru Logicaltramp jako následný derivát Supertramp poprvé v Brně Skupina Supertramp vznikla již koncem šedesátých let na britské hudební scéně. Třebaže jejich první album vyšlo už v roce 1970, na respekt hudebních kritiků si musela kapela nějaký ten rok počkat. Tehdy je zastínily jiné progresivní kapely jako Pink Floyd, The Who, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Black Sabbath – převážně tvrdší hudba. Jejich stylové směřování se dalo označit jako blue-eyed-soul. V českém prostředí by se jejich hudba nazývala bílý soul. Sestava Supertramp prošla personálními pro- měnami až se ustálila v sestavě Roger Hodgson (kytara, klavír, elektrické piano, zpěv) Rick Davies (elektrické piano, klavír, varhany, fou- kací harmonika, zpěv), John ní. De slog igenom under en era där naket självutlämnande, djupt melankoliska och närmast andligt sökande låtar kunde toppa listorna. En era då ironi och mobbing inte dominerade media. Där man kunde släppa två floppande album men ändå få förtroende nog av sitt skivbolag för att få göra ett tredje – och då slå igenom. En era då en grupp kunde ha långa, vindlande låtar med akustiska partier och solon av saxofon eller klarinett och ändå spelas på de stora popstationerna. Supertramp är också något av ett mysterium. Medlemmarna är så mediaskygga att de får gentlemännen i Pink Floyd att kännas som wannabes. Faktum är att ingen har riktig koll på huruvida bandet i dag finns. Inte ens deras skivbolag vet. Och frågan är om den kvarvarande ledaren Rick Davies heller bestämt sig. Men det spelar ingen roll. För det var åren 1974-1982 som den klassiska sättningen av den brittiska gruppen gjorde fem album som fortfarande kan hittas på många musikälskares listor över de bästa någonsin. Bandet grundades av två låtskrivare, sångare och klaviaturspelare med helt olika röster och temperament. Rick Davies kom från en R&B-bakgrund och spelade ett bluesigt boogiepiano som hade mer gemensamt med Dr John än ”progressive rock”. Hans röst var lite grötig och hans låtar jordnära betraktelser av vardagslivet. Den mer hippieliknande Roger Hodgson var några år yngre och hade växt upp med The Beatles och gillade Pink Floyd, Genesis och Elton John (som för övrigt spelat piano på hans solosingel, utgiven under namnet Argosy).
