In the present paper the genus is redefined to in- clude two new species collected in Colombia. This genus apparently is restricted to feeding on members of the Bromeliaceae, and specimens were collected on the heart of Ananas comosus and Aechmea bracteata. -

MCCOY2 1Entomology & Nematology Department, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611-0620 2Biology Department and Center for Urban Ecology, University of South Florida, Tampa, FL 33620-5150 ABSTRACT An excessive proportion of adventive (= “non-indigenous”) species in a community has been called “biological pollution.” Proportions of adventive species of fishes, am- phibia, reptiles, birds and mammals in southern Florida range from 16% to more than 42%. In Florida as a whole, the proportion of adventive plants is about 26%, but of in- sects is only about 8%. Almost all of the vertebrates were introduced as captive pets, but escaped or were released into the wild, and established breeding populations; few arrived as immigrants (= “of their own volition”). Almost all of the plants also were in- troduced, a few arrived as immigrants (as contaminants of shipments of seeds or other cargoes). In contrast, only 42 insect species (0.3%) were introduced (all for bio- logical control of pests, including weeds). The remainder (about 946 species, or 7.6%) arrived as undocumented immigrants, some of them as fly-ins, but many as contami- nants of cargoes. Most of the major insect pests of agriculture, horticulture, human- made structures, and the environment, arrived as hitchhikers (contaminants of, and stowaways in, cargoes, especially cargoes of plants). No adventive insect species caus- ing problems in Florida was introduced (deliberately) as far as is known. -

RESUMEN Se presenta una recopilación de más de un millar de taxones de nivel género o especie, de los que 486 corresponden a fósiles y 595 a organismos actuales, que fueron nombrados a partir de personajes reales o imaginarios, objetos, compañías comerciales, juegos de palabras, divertimentos sonoros o expresiones con doble significado. Entre las personas distinguidas por estos taxones destacan notablemente los artistas (músicos, actores, escritores, pintores) y, en menor medida, políticos, grandes científicos o divulgadores, así como diversos activistas. De entre los personajes u obras de ficción resaltan los derivados de ciertas obras literarias, películas o series de televisión, además de variadas mitologías propias de las diversas culturas. Los taxones que conllevan una terminología erótica o sexual más o menos explícita, también ocupan un lugar destacado en estas listas. Obviamente, el conjunto de estas excentricidades nomenclaturales, muchas de las cuales bordean el buen gusto y puntualmente rebasan las recomendaciones éticas de los códigos internacionales de nomenclatura, representan una ínfima minoría entre los casi dos millones de especies descritas hasta ahora. -

Elmo Hardy, including notes pre- sented at meetings, is given in chronological order. Additionally, a complete list of the new taxa of Diptera described by Hardy is presented. Introduction Over his exceptionally long and productive career of 65 years, D. Elmo Hardy published over 437 articles and notes proposing 1,867 new species-group names in 34 different families of Diptera. His proclivity in publishing and describing species is amazing when one considers the amount of time Elmo spent each year traveling on sabbaticals, attending international meetings, visiting family on the mainland U.S. almost every Christmas, and still meeting his teaching responsibilities. We pres- ent here as complete a list as possible of every published item attributed to his authorship or co- authorship. We include his many published notes that were presented at various meetings of the Hawaiian Entomological Society. These were not listed by Elmo in his own tracking of his publica- tions, but in many cases, new state records or other novel biological observations are included in those notes and no where else and thus are essential literature references.
