• Tungo Sa Pagsasakasaysayan Ng Isyung Tasaday
SA IBAYO NG MGA FOOTNOTE: TUNGO SA PAGSASAKASAYSAYAN NG ISYUNG TASADAY Michael Charleston B. Chua Carlos P. Tatel, Jr. The 20th anniversary of the controversial "International Anthropological Conference on the Tasaday Controversy and Other Urgent Anthropological Issues" in 2006 was a great opportunity to. revisit the publications, broadcasts and exhibits on the so-called "Stone-Age' tribe discovered?" by Manda Elizalde in 1971. The paper gives a survey of these publications: from the National Geographic article and photos announcing to the world the discovery, to the "footnote" exposes ofZeus Salazar and other "hoax" proponents, to books revisiting the controversy in the new millennium by Hemley and Hagedorn. The controversy enchanted academics, journalists, writers, and even a former first lady in her Imeldific rhetoric. The paper offers a periodization of the trends in the discourse: dominance of the "Stone age narrative" (1971-1986); dominance of the hoax proponents (1986-1989); and revisiting the Tasaday beyond the polemic debate (1989-2006). The trends of the discourse reflect the political changes in the Philippines and the major players in the debate, offering us a view of the history of the anthropology ofthe Tasaday.
