REVIEWS 473 his distrust of scholastic methods a sincere desire to touch ' the hem of the garment which enshrouded the Immortal and the Divine'. But the interference of the hierarchy and the Governments in the life of the University was not all that it had to suffer. London as well as Westminster exerted its influence, and the Citrus Londinensh in an age of pluralism included several Cambridge men whose contribution to academic developements operated more from the City than in Cambridge. For instance Mr Mullinger complains rightly of Lazarus Seaman's non-residence and indifference as (the Intruded) Master of Peterhouse. But Seaman, who held the City benefice of All Hallows, did not hesitate, though he was admitted Master of Peterhouse in April 1644, to Downloaded from accept office as junior dean of Sion College, London, in April 1645,and to serve the office of President for two years, 1651-2. Among his colleagues on the Court were Arthur Jackson (Mullinger, p. 227) and Thomas Horton, President of Queens'. As Sion College had been founded by a Puritan at the outset of the period covered by this volume for the promotion of 'love in conversing together', it became the meeting- http://jts.oxfordjournals.org/ place of many academic divines whose benefices gave them the right of fellowship; Richard Holdsworth, Master of Emmanuel, Brian Walton, of the Polygloti, Sidrach Simpson, of Emmanuel and Arnheim, Simeon Ashe, Manchester's chaplain, and John Arrowsmith, Master of Trinity, are only a few of Mr Mullinger's personae who could use the college in London Wall as a place in which to lay their plans and push their particular men. -

Abstract In the seventeenth century, in England, a remarkable number of small, religious movements began adopting demonstratively Jewish ritual practices. They were labelled by their contemporaries as Judaizers. Typically, this phenomenon has been explained with reference to other tropes of Puritan practical divinity. It has been claimed that Judaizing was a form of Biblicism or a form of millenarianism. In this thesis, I contend that Judaizing was an expression of another aspect of the Puritan experience: the need to be recognized as a ‘singular,’ positively- distinctive, separated minority. SCHNEPPER Dissertation Director: Alastair Bellany My dissertation, “Jonas Cast Up at London: The Experience of New World Churches in Revolutionary England,” offers a completely new way of approaching the history of religious struggle and debate during the English Revolution--blending the history of religious polemic and identity-formation with the history of the book and of print culture, and, for the first time, placing these epochal struggles over church government and religious freedom within a dynamic Atlantic context. With over one hundred printed books and pamphlets as my research base, my project uncovers the hitherto under-explored importance of English Atlantic colonial churches on the fiery debates over further reformation of the Church of England, and reveals a bustling world of preachers, polemicists and printers who refashioned the experiences of religious life in the Americas for English readers eager to recreate their own church according to what they took to be God’s will. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS While this dissertation bears my name, an entire village participated in its creation. -

English book owners in the seventeenth century: a work in progress listing How much do we really know about patterns and impacts of book ownership in Britain in the seventeenth century? How well equipped are we to answer questions such as the following?: • What was a typical private library, in terms of size and content, in the seventeenth century? • How does the answer to that question vary according to occupation, social status, etc? • How does the answer vary over time? – how different are ownership patterns in the middle of the century from those of the beginning, and how different are they again at the end? Having sound answers to these questions will contribute significantly to our understanding of print culture and the history of the book more widely during this period. Our current state of knowledge is both imperfect, and fragmented. There is no directory or comprehensive reference source on seventeenth-century British book owners, although there are numerous studies of individual collectors. There are well-known names who are regularly cited in this context – Cotton, Dering, Pepys – and accepted wisdom as to collections which were particularly interesting or outstanding, but there is much in this area that deserves to be challenged. Private Libraries in Renaissance England and Books in Cambridge Inventories have developed a more comprehensive approach to a particular (academic) kind of owner, but they are largely focused on the sixteenth century. Sears Jayne, Library Catalogues of the English Renaissance, extends coverage to 1640, based on book lists found in a variety of manuscript sources. The Cambridge History of Libraries in Britain and Ireland (2006) contains much relevant information in this field, summarising existing scholarship, and references to this have been included in individual entries below where appropriate. -

The Historic Collections of Lambeth Palace Library Transcript Date: Wednesday, 20 March 2013 - 6:00PM 20 March 2013 The Historic Collection of Lambeth Palace Library Giles Mandelbrote I would like to begin by thanking Gresham College for its very kind invitation to deliver this lecture and also to thank all of you for choosing this event rather than the competing attraction of the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s austerity plans for the next year. My talk this evening might have been subtitled “A Tale of Two Libraries” because I will be discussing the collections and early growth of two ecclesiastical libraries, Lambeth Palace Library and Sion College Library, both founded in the seventeenth century, whose development has run in parallel for much of their history, but also offers some sharp points of contrast. I should say, I am also very pleased that a number of members of Sion College, including the President, are here this evening. First of all, by way of orientation, Lambeth Palace Library, which you see before you, nowadays lies within a quadrilateral formed by the Underground Stations of Westminster, Waterloo, Lambeth North and Vauxhall, all about ten minutes’ walk away, but in the seventeenth century, as Hollar’s mid-century view makes plain, although surrounded by fields, gardens and Lambeth marsh, it was in many respects on the main line. You can see here the busy traffic on the river. Just going off the edge is the horse-ferry, running over to Westminster. Lambeth Marsh, over here, and here are the main buildings of the Palace itself, with the Great Hall and the Chapel behind, and the Cloister, which I will show to you in a minute, is just down behind the roof of the Great Hall. -

Jake Griesel May 2019 ii Jake Griesel Peterhouse, Cambridge John Edwards of Cambridge (1637-1716): A reassessment of his position within the later Stuart Church of England Abstract This study focuses on John Edwards of Cambridge (1637-1716) and the broader Reformed tradition within the later Stuart Church of England. Its central thesis is that, contrary to the claims of older scholarship, Edwards was not a marginalized figure in the Church of England on account of his ‘Calvinism’. Instead, this study demonstrates that Edwards was recognized in his own day and in the immediately following generations as one of the preeminent conforming divines of the period, and that his theological and polemical works, despite some Arminian opposition, enjoyed a very positive reception among significant segments of the established Church’s clergy, many of whom shared his Reformed doctrinal convictions. -
