  • The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960S
The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960s By Zachary Saltz University of Kansas, Copyright 2011 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Film and Media Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John Tibbetts ________________________________ Dr. Michael Baskett ________________________________ Dr. Chuck Berg Date Defended: 19 April 2011 ii The Thesis Committee for Zachary Saltz certifies that this is the approved version of the following thesis: The Green Sheet and Opposition to American Motion Picture Classification in the 1960s ________________________________ Chairperson Dr. John Tibbetts Date approved: 19 April 2011 iii ABSTRACT The Green Sheet was a bulletin created by the Film Estimate Board of National Organizations, and featured the composite movie ratings of its ten member organizations, largely Protestant and represented by women. Between 1933 and 1969, the Green Sheet was offered as a service to civic, educational, and religious centers informing patrons which motion pictures contained potentially offensive and prurient content for younger viewers and families. When the Motion Picture Association of America began underwriting its costs of publication, the Green Sheet was used as a bartering device by the film industry to root out municipal censorship boards and legislative bills mandating state classification measures. The Green Sheet underscored tensions between film industry executives such as Eric Johnston and Jack Valenti, movie theater owners, politicians, and patrons demanding more integrity in monitoring changing film content in the rapidly progressive era of the 1960s. Using a system of symbolic advisory ratings, the Green Sheet set an early precedent for the age-based types of ratings the motion picture industry would adopt in its own rating system of 1968.

INFORMATION TO USERS This was produced from a copy of a document sent to us for microfilming. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the material submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or notations which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or “target” for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is “Missing Page(s)”. If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting through an image and duplicating adjacent pages to assure you of complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a round black mark it is an indication that the film inspector noticed either blurred copy because of movement during exposure, or duplicate copy. Unless we meant to delete copyrighted materials that should not have been filmed, you will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photo graphed the photographer has followed a definite method in “sectioning” the material. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand comer of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. If necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. For any illustrations that cannot be reproduced satisfactorily by xerography, photographic prints can be purchased at additional cost and tipped into your xerographic copy.

  • Adventures in Film Music Redux Composer Profiles
Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).

  • Martin Denny and the Sounds of Exotica
Martin Denny and the Sounds of Exotica This in an updated version of an article originally published in Film Score Monthly (Vol. 2, No. 4, June 1997). A look at the unique circumstances of Forbidden Island. The mysteries of the tropics await! by Kerry J. Byrnes, Okemos High Class of 1963 Some twenty years ago John Bender=s article (“First Dive...Into the Dark Pool of ‘Soundtrack Related’”) published in Film Score Monthly (FSM#69) prompted me to pick up the I, Swinger CD by the musical group Combustible Edison, especially as Bender had referred to the CD as a “knock off” of a number of musicians, including Martin Denny, one of my all-time favorites. But I was most intrigued by Bender’s statement that Denny had “even managed to get one film score under his belt.” Bender=s next sentence added the needed clarification: “Let’s hope Denny=s music for Forbidden Island isn’t as hopelessly lost as the film itself seems to be.” But Forbidden Island, as later clarified, is not lost (though not yet commercially available on DVD). Produced by C.B. Griffith in 1959, Forbidden Island was shown on cable’s TNT in August of 1992 as part of a package of films TNT licensed from Columbia, now owned by Sony (film not included in the current package of newer films Sony has licensed to TNT). Fortunately, a video of TNT’s screening of Forbidden Island was preserved by none other than the Maestro of Exotica – Martin Denny – who kindly loaned his copy so I could make a dub.

  • January, 2021, Listening Calendar
January, 2021, Listening Calendar Friday, January 1: The Choral Scholars of Dublin’s Auld Lang Syne (4:01) “Auld Lang Syne” comes from an old Scottish poem. The song is well-known around the world. The song is traditionally sung as a farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Best wishes to all in 2021! Saturday, January 2: Claude Debussy’s Arabesque (4:06) French composer Claude Debussy wrote this lovely and popular piece early in his musical career. It was originally written for the piano. Enjoy this beautiful, calm arrangement. Sunday, January 3: The Beatles Let It Be (3:54) As the story goes, Paul McCartney has said that "Let It Be" was inspired by a dream he had about his mother, Mary. In the dream, she assured her son that everything would be all right despite all the turmoil going on in his life. This is a song offering great hope and comfort. Monday, January 4: John Philip Sousa’s Washington Post March (3:30) “Washington Post March” is a very popular march written by the march-king, John Philip Sousa. I hope this toe-tapping lively music might be a great way to start the week. Tuesday, January 5: Benny Goodman’s Sing, Sing, Sing (5:23) “Sing, Sing, Sing is a popular song from the Big-Band/Swing jazz period of the 1930s made famous by clarinetist and band leader Benny Goodman. Fifth-grade students will be “sing, sing, singing” this song in January! Wednesday, January 6: The Little Mermaid’s Under the Sea (3:26) This popular Disney song (and movie) needs no introduction! Feel free to sing along! Thursday, January 7: Jacque Offenbach’s Snowflake Ballet (11:07) Close your eyes and imagine falling snowflakes dancing gracefully through the air as you listen to this beautiful classical music.

  • The Forging of a White Gay Aesthetic at the Saint, 1980–84
The Forging of a White Gay Aesthetic at the Saint, 1980–84 Feature Article Tim Lawrence University of East London Abstract An influential private party for white gay men that opened in downtown New York in 1980 and closed in 1988, the Saint was a prolific employer of high-profile DJs, yet their work has gone largely unanalysed. This article describes and contextualises the aesthetic of these DJs, paying particular attention to the way they initially embraced music recorded by African American musicians, yet shifted to a notably “whiter” sound across 1982 and 1983, during which time new wave and Hi-NRG recordings were heard much more regularly at the spot. The piece argues that this shift took place as a result of a number of factors, including the introduction of a consumer ethos at the venue, the deepening influence of identity politics and the encroaching impact of AIDS, which decimated the venue’s membership. These developments led Saint DJs to place an ever-greater emphasis on the creation of a smooth and seamless aesthetic that enhanced the crowd’s embrace of a synchronized dancing style. DJs working in electronic dance music scenes would go on to adopt important elements of this approach. Keywords: The Saint, DJing, whiteness, neoliberalism, AIDS Tim Lawrence is the author of Love Saves the Day: A History of Dance Music Culture (1970–79) (Duke, 2003) and Hold On to Your Dreams: Arthur Russell and the Downtown Music Scene, 1973–92 (Duke, 2009). He is currently writing a book on New York club culture, 1980–84, again for Duke, and leads the Music Culture: Theory and Production programme at the University of East London.
