The Beatles - Here, There And Everywhere - Revolver (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul while sitting by the pool of John’s estate, this classic ballad was inspired by The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.” Completed in 14 takes spread over three sessions on June 14, 16 and 17, 1966. Paul’s lead vocal is double tracked. Paul, John, and George provide the lush harmony and Ringo drums using brushes. The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his “first real major piece of work.” Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- “Eleanor Rigby” and “In My Life.” Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John’s Mellotron. The gorgeous solo is provided by . To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the . On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP

The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John and Paul ’s stunning ballad “If I Fell” was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from “This Boy” with its similar chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded – at their request – together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of 1964. Completed in 15 takes on February 27, 1964. Flip side of “And I Love Her” in the U.S. On U.S. album: A Hard Day’s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP

The Beatles - Words Of Love - Beatles For Sale (Holly) Lead vocal: John and Paul The Beatles idolized Buddy Holly and performed his songs regularly as part of their club act. So it is a little surprising that “Words of Love” is the only Buddy Holly song the band officially recorded. John and Paul took extra care to make sure their harmonies were perfect, likewise George, in reverence to the material, double-tracked his careful guitar work. This recording was special to the Beatles, and it shows. Recorded on October 18, 1964 in three takes. On U.S. album: Beatles VI - Capitol LP

(Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul Written mainly by Paul with the middle eight by John it was released as a single in the U.S. reaching #12. Recorded initially as a heavier, -tempo number on February 25, 1964, The Beatles attempted two takes and moved on to something else. On February 26 they struggled with the simpler, now acoustic arrangement through 12 more takes and Ringo swapping his drums for congas, ultimately leaving it to be re-made the next day. Finally, on February 27, they had the arrangement to their liking and perfected the song in two completed takes (takes 20 and 21). Wings – – Venus & Mars Written on a 12-string guitar, recorded from the late 1975 EMI sessions engineered by . Also on the track, Paul plays on his newly purchased standup bass, once owned by and used on some of ’s most famous records.

The Beatles - Love You To - Revolver (Harrison) Lead vocal: George George’s first composition written with Indian instruments in mind. The basic track was recorded in six takes on April 11, 1966. The song’s working title was “Granny Smith,” a reference to the name of the green apple popular in the UK. George’s lead vocal was recorded on April 12. A harmony vocal by Paul was omitted in the final mix. The tabla is played by Anil Bhagwat, who is credited on the album’s back cover. It is assumed that plays the sitar on this track. The phrase “Love You To” does not appear in the song. The closest George comes to the title is “I’ll make love to you if you want me to.” Two years later, the Granny Smith apple would become the logo for The Beatles’ company, Apple Corps, and would be featured on their record labels. With the exception of the “Let It Be” album issued in 1970, which had a red apple featured on the label, the standard album and single labels displayed a bright green Granny Smith apple on the A-side, while the flipside/Side 2 displayed the midsection of the apple cut in half. The Beatles - Can’t Buy Me Love - A Hard Day’s Night (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles’ sixth single release for EMI’s Parlophone label. During their 19-day engagement at Paris’s Olympia Theatre The Beatles took time out to record German-language versions for two of their biggest hits. “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” were chosen to get new vocals to increase sales in the German market. This was at the insistence of EMI’s German branch, Odeon, which felt they couldn’t sell large quantities of records unless they were sung in German. With less than an hour left on their booked recording time, The Beatles recorded four takes of a new song by Paul, “Can’t Buy Me Love.” Issued in the U.S. on March 16, 1964, it sold 940,225 copies in the U.S. the day it was released, earning a gold record award that day and shattering all previous sales records.. McCartney has said it was the first song he ever wrote where he had the words before the music. Recorded in 13 takes on July 30, 1963. “All My Loving” is the most commercial Lennon-McCartney song recorded by The Beatles in 1963 that was not released as a single in the UK or U.S. On U.S. album: Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP

The Beatles - You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away - Help! (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Recorded in less than two hours on February 18, 1965. Written entirely by John Lennon, who freely admitted the obvious Bob Dylan influence. Lennon wrote this at Kenwood, his home on the St. George’s Hill estate in Weybridge, Surrey (where the Beatles would be photographed for the cover of their “Rubber Soul” album). John’s original lyric was “I can’t go on feeling two foot tall,” but when it for Paul the first time he accidentally said, two foot “small.” Lennon then laughed and said, “Let’s leave it … all those pseudes will really love it.” The first of their songs since “Love Me Do” in 1962 to feature an outside musician. Johnnie Scott provides the flute solo at the end of the song, though he is not credited on the album jacket. On U.S. album: Help! - Capitol LP

The Beatles - P.S. I Love You – Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: Paul Recorded in ten takes on September 11, 1962, with Andy White on drums. The b-side of “Love Me Do,” released October 5, 1962, in the UK. The Beatles originally intended this to be the A-side of their first Parlophone single but because another song with the same title had been released by Peggy Lee they were persuaded to put this on the b-side. One of the three original compositions they performed during their EMI audition. Written mostly by Paul McCartney in April or May 1962 while The Beatles were in Hamburg, Germany. John has said it was Paul’s attempt to mimic “Soldier Boy” by The Shirelles, which was a hit in April of 1962. One of several Beatles songs Paul McCartney owns with Yoko Ono. Starting with the songs recorded for their debut album on February 11, 1963, Lennon-McCartney’s output was attached to their Northern Songs publishing company.
