BWTB March 15Th 2015 1 Breakfast with The Beatles Playlist America’s Longest Running Beatles Radio Show! March 8th 2015 As we begin Daylight Saving Time (DST) on Sunday, March 8, 2015. Our annual ALL SOLO BEATLES Show. No songs performed by the Beatles for the next 3 hours…but plenty of songs performed by Beatles! 9AM/OPEN 2 John we’d like to begin with you if yer ready? John Lennon – Look At Me - Plastic Ono Band ‘70 A song written around the time of “Julia” during the White Album sessions, it was never offered for that particular record. George Harrison – Let It Down (acoustic) - All Things Must Pass ‘70 Also written during the “Let It Be” sessions, this track shows Phil Spector running rampant with the Wall of Sound. Paul McCartney – Every Night – McCartney ‘70 Paul had been playing with the first two lines of the song since ’67, he finished Every Night while on holiday in Greece in 1969. Paul played guitar, drums and bass, with Linda on backing vocals. 9.10 BREAK No songs performed by the Beatles …but plenty of songs performed by Beatles! 3 NEW! Ringo – Postcards From Paradise - Postcards From Paradise 2015 John Lennon/Ringo – I’m The Greatest - Anthology ‘98 John’s recording and composition for Ringo – who used as the lead track on his “Ringo” solo album. George Harrison – I Dig Love - All Things Must Pass ‘70 Some idiots have considered this the most “throwaway track” of the album. But for this master class in songwriting, this track is far from a throwaway. Homer Simpson /Wings Peter Fonda clip Wings – Getting Closer This song had been lying around since 1974 in an unfinished form. This was the first time in five years that a leadoff single from the album was a “rocker.” This may have had to do with why the single didn’t perform as well, as the audience who had expected some lighter material. John – Tower Records Spot LA 1974 4 John Lennon – Whatever Gets You Thru The Night Credited to “John Lennon with the Plastic Ono Nuclear Band,” this track was recorded with Elton John (who at the time was the biggest star in the world). This would be John’s first #1 single, making him the last of the Beatles (solo) to have a number one song. The song’s composition was heavily influenced by the melody of George McCrae’s spring of ’74 hit, “Rock You /Baby.” No songs performed by the Beatles …but plenty of songs performed by Beatles! 9.40 BREAK No songs performed by the Beatles …but plenty of songs performed by Beatles! Paul - Yvonne's the One (Paul McCartney, Eric Stewart) – Press To Play sessions John - India, India – 1980/Signature Box 2010 India, India had its première as part of the musical 'Lennon', which ran briefly in San Franciso and New York City in 2005…then again box set 2010 for the first time on CD 5 George Harrison – Let It Be Me (demo) - Early Takes Vol.1 ‘12 A song orig. a hit in 1955 in France …made famous by the Everly Brothers in 1960 where it got to #7 John Lennon – Gimme Me Some Truth – Imagine ‘71 This was also composed in the Spring of ’68 in India. It was also “rehearsed” during the Get Back sessions. The song had contemporary lyrical additions, in reference to “Tricky Dicky” (Richard Nixon) and a desire for such people to give John the truth. Paul & Linda McCartney – Monkberry Moon Delight – Ram ‘71 Many have also considered this to be another dig at the Beatles and the problems with fame. But in true McCartney fashion, it’s just a fun, rocking tune with throwaway lyrics. Read back… NO BEATLES NEWS TODAY… NO BEATLES MUSIC NO BEATLE NEWS! INSTEAD Let’s play… Who’s singing that McCartney song from RAM? 800-955-KLOS FAB FOUR AT CITY NATIONAL GROVE OF ANAHEIM 4/11 BEATLES FAIR AT THE QUEEN BEE IN SAN DIEGO 3/28 10.12 BREAK 6 BWTB/KLOS/Bumper George Harrison – Sue Me, Sue You Blues - Living In The Material World ‘73 Inspired the Beatles legal problems, George wouldn’t let a good fight go unrecorded. In characteristic good humor, George put the frustrations of Paul suing his former band mates to song (while Lennon reportedly threw bricks through Paul’s windows – though this is highly, highly disputed!). This song had some lyrical modifications for his 1974 US Tour, brining the story up to date to include the litigation against Allen Klein (Paul told you so, George!). Paul McCartney & Wings – Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-Five – Band on the Run ‘73 A fantastic ending to a flawless album, the hook had been floating around Paul’s head for months prior to the composition. There was a mastering error on the song (and CD versions) that remained for many, many years where the beginning was affected by a “quick fade up.” 7 John Lennon – Imagine - Acoustic ‘04 Live at the Apollo Theater, December 17th, 1971. From Anthology. Wings – Blackbird (McCartney-Lennon) - Wings Over America ‘76 Recorded in Boston, MA – May 22nd. The acoustic set continues with the crowd favorite tune. Wings – Yesterday (McCartney-Lennon) - Wings Over America ‘76 QUIZ #2 SOLO QUICK MIX …where we play you 6 solo Beatles songs and you call 800-955-KLOS and tell us the names of those 6 solo songs. Letem karma life? ohmy jet odell 10.42 BREAK Its an all solo show today no songs preformed by the Beatles…but many preformed with 2 Beatles or half the Beatles as I like to say…and here’s a set with just that …2 Beatles on 8 each of these following songs…. starting w/ Ringo & Paul. Songs with 2 Beatles set Ringo – Six O’Clock – RINGO 1973 Personnel : Ringo - Lead vocals, drums Paul McCartney - Piano, synthesizer, backing vocals, string and flute arangements Linda McCartney - Backing vocals Klaus Voorman - Bass Vini Poncia - Acoustic guitar, percussion 9 An obvious Wings throwaway from Red Rose Red Rose Speedway era John Lennon – How Do You Sleep – Imagine ‘71 The most scathing outward song directed towards Paul McCartney. As John responded to a number of songs written on Paul’s Ram LP. This was song was all about Paul, but later John said it was really about himself. George offers a blistering guitar solo. It’s said that even Allen Klein contributed some lyrics towards Paul McCartney, because at the time, Paul was suing Klein and the other Beatles. Paul McCartney – No Values/No More Lonely Nights (Ballad Reprise) - Give My Regards to Broad Street ‘84 No Values is a song inspired by a dream. In the dream, Paul saw the Rolling Stones playing this track. Although it originated as a very Stones-like tune, Paul changed it to a more of a “Beware My Love” type track. The LP version differs from the CD. 10 Originally written and rehearsed with Wings in the late 70's. Paul : Bass and vocals /Linda : Keyboards and vocals Ringo :Drums Dave Edmunds : Guitar Chris Spedding : Guitar George Harrison – When We Was Fab (Harrison-Lynne) - Cloud Nine ‘87 While attending the Australian Grand Prix with Jeff Lynne in November 1986 – this track started out as “Aussie Fab.” George and Jeff would pull out the song every so often, tinkering with the sound and the now-famous piano riff (Jeff’s concept). “Ausie” was soon replaced with “When We Were,” which was then refined by Derek Taylor to “When We Was.” To cement the “Fab” concept, Ringo added his first drumming contribution to a George record since “All Those Years Ago.” The song was released as the second single off the album, and did quite well, reaching the Top 25 in the Billboard charts. 11 George Harrison – All Those Years Ago This particular track is a puzzle still somewhat unsolved. Originally written for Ringo with different lyrics, (which Ringo didn’t think was right for him), the lyrics were rewritten after John Lennon’s murder. Although Ringo did provide drums, there is a dispute as to whether Paul, Linda and Denny did backing vocals at Friar Park, or in their own studio – hence phoning it in. But Paul insists that he had asked George to play on his own track, Wanderlust, for the Tug Of War album. Having arrived at George’s Friar Park estate, they instead focused on backing vocals for All Those Years Ago. It became George’s biggest hit in 8 years, just missing the top spot on the charts. 3 Beatles on that last track w/ Wings Linda & Denny… 11.12 BREAK 12 BWTB/KLOS/Bumper John Lennon – Tight A$ - Mind Games ‘73 This track was an interesting turn for John’s songwriting, as this was the first song that wasn’t about “something.” Paul McCartney & Wings – Get On the Right Thing – Red Rose Speedway ‘73 Originally written & recorded during the Ram Sessions. And was part of the intended double-album that Red Rose Speedway was supposed to become. 13 Ringo Story Ringo – Back Off Boogaloo - Single 1972 BREAK HERE/Call Micky Dolenz Give me some dialing music Jordan (Gay Sprits) 14 Welcome /Happy Birthday Micky Dolenz! • BWTB Sept. 13Th 2015
1 2 Playlist Sept. 13th 2015 9AM/OPEN The Beatles - I’m Only Sleeping - Revolver (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: John Written by John and Paul at Kenwood, John’s estate in Weybridge, in one writing session. Recording of the backing rhythm track began at 11:30 p.m. on April 27, 1966. John recorded his lead vocal on April 29. Both the vocal and backing track were recorded at variable speed. It was during the recording of “I’m Only Sleeping” that The Beatles discovered the “backwards guitar.” On May 5, 1966, as the band continued working on the song, George painstakingly transcribed the notes in his guitar solo and flourishes and then wrote them out backwards. He then played them in that reverse order. The tapes were then superimposed BACKWARDS in the mix, playing the solo notes and embellishments in the correct order, but maintaining the eerie backwards sound. “I’m Only Sleeping” was one of three songs issued in America six weeks prior to their official release in the UK. American and Canadian Beatles fans heard “I’m Only 3 Sleeping,” “And Your Bird Can Sing,” and “Doctor Robert” first on Capitol Records’ “Yesterday And Today” album, issued June 20, 1966. The rest of the world had to wait until the first week of August for them to appear on the “Revolver” LP. On U.S. album: Yesterday And Today - Capitol LP The Beatles - Fixing A Hole - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Lennon-McCartney) Lead vocal: Paul On February 9, 1967, the Beatles recorded “Fixing A Hole” at Regent Sound Studio on Tottenham Court Road in London.
