It is no more than a sketch of the latter, and to have attempted the larger task would have required a HAT Handbuch zum Alten Testament volume much greater in size than I have been able to offer. My aim has been to provide the student and general reader with some picture of the HKAT Handkommentar zum Alten Testament main lines of interpretation which have affected the study of the Old Testament, with a particular emphasis upon questions of methodology. JBL Journal of Biblical Literature In doing this I have concentrated upon the work of a few scholars whose contributions appear to me to have been particularly significant and in- KHAT Kurzer Hand-Commentar zum Alten Testament teresting in this respect. Two major departments of the study and interpretation of the Old Th.B. Theologische Biicherei Testament have been almost entirely left out of my treatment. One of these is the linguistic and philological examination of the text and Th.Z. Theologische Zeitschrift language of the literature and the other is that of Palestinian and Near Eastern archaeology. For these omissions I would wish to venture the WMANT Wissenschaftliche Monographien zum Alten und Neuen following reasons, besides my own lack of competence in these Testament specialized fields. One is that both fields of research affect the entire Old Testament, so that to consider them would have required a separate ZAW Zeitschrift fiir die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft section in each of my main chapter divisions. The other is that each of vii these departments of study has grown so enormously in the past century that they properly require separate treatments of their own if they are to be described in a sufficiently meaningful way. For practical reasons I have kept footnotes to a minimum and references to literature to what is essential for a proper understanding of the chronological perspective. I hope I have provided enough informa- tion for the reader to be able to find some further treatments of the main issues that are discussed. That my selection of developments may appear somewhat arbitrary has been unavoidable in order to keep the 1 work within a reasonable length. I have also found it necessary at times to indicate where I think scholars have been wrong, without being able to set out all the reasons for my doing so. Since R. E. Clements the beginning of the Christian era the Old Testament has been used and 1976 read in substantially the same form as that in which it exists today, and its earliest literary sources go back approximately a millennium more. The reasons which led to the quest for a fresh critical understanding of the origins and significance of the Old Testament are certainly to be traced to the years before 1870, and most of the methods and tools of literary and historical scholarship had already become available, and had been tested, by this time. In fact many of the conclusions about the structure and origin of the Old Testament which broke so disturbingly upon the Church and the world in the next decade through the writings in Germany of such scholars as J. Wellhausen and B. Duhm, were cer- tainly not entirely novel or unprecedented. In a great many respects they represented a refinement and consolidation of views that had been propounded for a number of years. What was new was the strength of the case that was now being eagerly canvassed for a fresh critical ac- count of the historical rise of Israel and its religion, and the clarity with which the case was now presented. It made a warm appeal to a wide cir- cle of competent scholarship who were readily able to examine the . Vlll evidence on which it was based. Gnuse In the past fifteen years Old Testament scholars have critically assessed existing paradigms used not only in scholarly research but also in our textbooks and found them to be wanting. In this period of scholarly ferment one cannot be too sure where the new scholarly paradigms will take us, but a new consensus seems to be emerging on a number of issues, some of which may have significant implications for how Christians and Jews draw forth theological and religious meanings from the biblical texts. Two areas of study in Old Testament research have drawn the attention of this author for the past ten years: first, how archaeologists have begun to interpret the process by which the Israelites "conquered" Palestine; and second, how historians of Israelite religion have begun to portray the emergence of monotheism among the Israelites. Many biblical theologians have taken their cue for the creation of biblical or Old Testament theologies from an understanding of these two aspects of Israelite existence. The emergence of new scholarly understandings will cause biblical theologians perhaps to fine tune their explications and stress different nuances in the future. This paper is designed to be a tentative probe in articulating what might be the themes that biblical theologians will stress in the future as they reflect upon the biblical literature of the Old Testament or Hebrew canon. I shall first make some general observations about the nature of biblical theology in the Old Testament. Then a brief summary will be made of some of the significant new directions taken by scholarship in the discussions about the nature of the Israelite conquest and emerging monotheism.

West Baden College INCENT TAYLOR has written: "By general consent 'the Logos', or V'the Word', is one of the greatest titles applied to Christ in the New Testament. Many would say that it is the sublimest title of all. The name is used only by St. John, in the Prologue to the Gospel, i. 1-18 and in the opening words of the First Epistle, i. 1-4; but its ideas colour the teaching of St. Paul in Col. i. 15-20 and of the writer of Hebrews in Heb. i. 1-3."1 The purpose of this article is to synthesize the OT usage of the divine word which is the background of the appli­ cation of the term to Jesus; it is hoped that theologians will find such a synthesis useful. I believe that the background, while complex, is extraordinarily rich and fruitful.2 THE DIVINE WORD IN THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST In tracing the pattern and growth of any OT idea, it is necessary to see whether the idea has roots in the older cultures of the Near East; from such a comparison alone is it possible to determine the degree to which the Hebrew idea is original. The reassessment is carried out via a literary critical, linguistic and contextual analysis of the text, in particular those passages which are generally regarded as Deuteronomistic compositions. The author argues that the history was indeed a well planned and unified work, but one that ended at2 Kgs 23:23 with the reign of Josiah. It was principally a story of Israel’s leaders and Moses and Joshua (Deuteronomy to Judg 2: 10), the period of Israel from the judges to the monarchy (Judg 2:11 to 1 Sam 11:15), and the period of Israel under the prophets and kings (1 Sam 13:1 to 2 Kgs 23:23). Subsequent redaction was carried out in three main stages. The first was a fairly straightforward updating of the history to stage accounted for the exile by applying the history’s critique of the northern kings to the Davidic dynasty. The third stage transferred its attention to the people and sought to transform the history from a story of Israel’s leaders into a story of the people’s failure to observe the law. Introduction One of the most hotly contended issues, perhaps even the most difficult problem of the entire OT book of Amos, is the assessment of Amos' message about the future. Does Amos have a message that contains a future for Israel or, in any case, for an entity within Israel? Do his words contain an eschatology or at least one or more aspects of eschatology? Two foundational considerations are undeniable. The first re- lates to the fact that the book of Amos in its canonical form contains messages that clearly hold out a future, if not for Israel as a whole, then at least for a "remnant of Joseph" (5:15). Whether this future hope is eschatological in nature depends to a large degree, but by no means entirely, upon the definition of eschatology. For our purpose it may suffice to say that we follow the broad definition of eschatology in the sense of an end of the present world order which can either be within the flow of history or, in an absolute and final sense, at the end of all history.'     " (HE{fHEY) SHALL BE PUT TO DEATH" LIVE-PRESERVING DIVINE THREATS IN OLD TESTAMENT LAW ERHARDS.GERSTENBERGER One of the main concems in discussing law and liberty is to distinguish clearly between divine and human regulations in the scriptures. Blurring the boun­ dary line is dangerous. Persons or groups who use divine sanctions or try to exe­ cute divine justice soon will consider themselves vice-regents of God himself. They create theocratic systems claiming to know the absolute values and to ad­ minister the purest set of rules without failing. This attitude implies, on the other hand, a superior insight into the nature of evil and a divine commission to eradi­ cate all evildoers. In this fashion theocratic groups or societies inevitably turn to­ talitarian. In other words, drawing divine sanctions into human law, making legal procedure a vehicle for establishing absolute justice, must result in a totalloss of freedom. For quite a while scholarly research on OT Law has focused on what seemed to be authoritative, "apodictic" traits of the old biblical stipulations. Al­ brecht Alt inaugurated this evaluation in 1934 by publishing his famous essay on the "Origins of Israelite Law."1 The scholarly world virtually in unison accepted his description of divine (and genuinely Israelite) Law as being most of all "un­ tamed and aggressively" potent,2 "neglecting all personal facets of guilt,"3 "relat­ ed to the absolute will of Yahweh, therefore administering only the most rigid punishment,"4 "categorical," "determined," and "unconditional." Nobody seemed to feel offended by the violence of these concepts and their totalitarian conse­ quences.s Nobody questioned the notion of God behind such affirmations of un­ mercifulness.

The name ‘Pentateuch’ means literally ‘the work comprising five scrolls’, from Greek pente and teukhos, which can mean ‘scroll’. It has been used since at least early Christian times for the first five books of the OT, Genesis to Deuteronomy. The Jewish name for these books was usually and still is ‘the law’: Hebrew tôrâ, Greek nomos or nomothesia (the latter is literally ‘legislation’), and it is this name which appears in the NT: e.g. Lk 24:11 , ‘What is written in the law, the prophets and the psalms’, where we meet the threefold subdivision of the Hebrew canon that continues to be used, with the substitution of ‘writings’ for ‘psalms’ as the third section. Cf. also the Greek Prologue to Sirach (c.132 BCE). But there is a much deeper way of asking, and answering, the question, ‘What is the Pentateuch?’, one which goes beyond merely defining its external limits to enquire into its nature. In other words, what sort of a thing is this section of the Bible? This question can only really be answered after a full examination of the text, and one justification for the kind of detailed critical analysis which has been popular in modern OT scholarship is that it enables us to give a well-judged (if complicated!) answer to that question.

Einleitung: Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, verehrtes Auditorium, Ein Vortrag über die Person eines bekannten Wissenschaftlers steht immer in der Gefahr, den Charakter einer Laudatio oder eines lobenden Nachrufs zu tragen. Wie gerechtfertigt eine solche Ausrichtung ist, muss sicher von Fall zu Fall entschieden werden. Allerdings bringt der Charakter einer Laudatio stets die Tendenz der Überhöhung und damit der Unwissenschaftlichkeit mit sich. Obwohl ich im Folgenden versucht habe, dies zu vermeiden, ist es bei einem Vortrag über die Person Albrecht Alt kaum möglich, lobende Worte zu unterlassen. Die für seine Zeit immense Publikationsliste und wegweisende Forschung versetzt auch heute noch in Staunen. Dieser Vortrag konzentriert sich zunächst auf das biographisch ausgerichtete Thema Alt als Privatperson und stellt daran anschließend auf das Thema Alt als Wissenschaftler vor. Die Wissenschaftstätigkeit von Albrecht Alt betrachte ich einerseits seinem literarischem Wirken nach und andererseits seinem Schaffen in Deutschland und Israel nach. Zur Aufarbeitung des Lebens Albrecht Alts wurden im Jahr 2015 von Januar bis Mai aus seinem Nachlass 1444 Fotos, 894 Glasdias und 249 Negative und damit insgesamt 2.487 Bildträger digitalisiert, bearbeitet und katalogisiert. Die Motive der Aufnahmen reichen dabei von der Vorlesungstätigkeit Alts über seine Reisen nach und in levantinisches Gebiet bis hin zu Urlaubsbildern. Dieser digitalisierte photographische Nachlass bildet die Grundlage für meinen folgenden Vortrag. Aufgrund des reichhaltigen Quellenmaterials beschränke ich mich allerdings auf eine repräsentative Auswahl an Bildern und versuche die zwangsläufig entstehenden biographischen Lücken durch die Konsultation von Sekundärliteratur zu schließen, um ein biographisches Gesamtbild Alts zeichnen zu können. 2. Die Person Albrecht Alt Am 20.09.1883 wurde Georg Albrecht Alt als einziger Sohn des Pfarrers Johann Friedrich Christian Alt und der Pfarrfrau Maria Justina Karoline Alt in Stübach in Franken geboren.
