Journal of Social Welfare and Management49 Volume 5 Number 1, Jan - Mar 2013 Violence in Hindi Movies: A Comparative Study of Two Movies Sonalee Nargunde*, Iliyas Ahmad** Abstract Cinema in India has developed to a large extent and movies are its significant tool. Movies not only provide entertainment to the large audiences but also play some additional roles. The message provided by this medium is more impactful than any other medium because of its reach and easy accessibility. The content provided by the Indian films plays an important role in shaping up its audience. After, reviewing some of the movies, the researcher found a consistent theme of violence in almost all the films and found it important to share it with larger audience. Indian film industry produces more than 800 films annually and almost story line of all the movies is weaved around love, revenge, mafia wars and all this is supported by heavy dose of violence. Critics say that the Indian cinema nowadays is churning out films with persistent theme of violence because of the transplantation of the western ideas resulting in the portrayal of extreme vulgarity on big screen. Film makers follow the steps of Hollywood where most of the movies are much more violent than the bollywood. Movies released in the last few years have seen a continuous increase in the portrayal of violence both in content and subject wise. Keywords: Film violence; Bollywood; Movies. Journal of Culture, Society and Development www.iiste.org ISSN 2422-8400 An International Peer-reviewed Journal Vol.39, 2018 The ‘Item Number’ in Indian Cinema: Deconstructing the Paradox Isha Jain (Corresponding author) National Law School of India University, Bangalore, India Abstract The “item number” is a hyper-sexualised song-and-dance performance that is characteristic to mainstream Bollywood cinema. When viewed in the context of a general tendency towards the censorship of public depictions of sexualized women in other spheres of the Indian polity, the ubiquity and popularity of item numbers reflects a confounding cultural paradox. The aim of this article is to deconstruct this paradox, by identifying the narrative structures and plot devices employed by film-makers to market these performances without suffering the disapproval of either the Indian State apparatus or the purportedly prudish Indian cinema- goer. Introduction The Indian State, through both its formal and informal centres of power, continues to burden the Indian woman with the charge of guarding national pride, culture, and morality.1 The defiling of the Indian woman, synonymous with her sexualisation, is the defiling of India. This parallel is evident in the title of “Mother India”, a 1957 film centred around a de-sexualised, self-sacrificial female protagonist intended to be emblematic of both the ideal Indian woman and of India herself.2 Yet, the Indian film industry has succeeded at carving out a niche for the commodification and sale of female sexuality within a broader milieu characterised by the disapprobation of that very sexuality. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the “item number”,3 a hyper-sexualised cinematic performance that is both paradoxically and quintessentially Bollywood. -

Historically, they are judicially evolved remedies and Indian judiciary has found its authority to issue such orders in Copyright infringement cases either by using provisions written in wide capacious language in Civil Procedure Code, 1908 or by using inherent powers of the court under Civil Procedure Code, 1908. Due to this they lack safeguards or restrictions, giving courts a lot of discretion to play around with. The result of this is that exploitative characteristics have crept into these orders that are causing injustice to a lot of people. The objective of the note is to point out these characteristics and resulting hardships caused by these characteristics. Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights aspires that there should be a balance between Copyright protection and accessibility of cultural goods to the public. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies. -

GLOBAL CINEMA Edited by Katarzyna Marciniak, Anikó Imre, and Áine O’Healy The Global Cinema series publishes innovative scholarship on the transnational themes, industries, economies, and aesthetic elements that increasingly connect cinemas around the world. It promotes theoretically transformative and politi- cally challenging projects that rethink film studies from cross-cultural, comparative perspectives, bringing into focus forms of cinematic production that resist nation- alist or hegemonic frameworks. Rather than aiming at comprehensive geographical coverage, it foregrounds transnational interconnections in the production, dis- tribution, exhibition, study, and teaching of film. Dedicated to global aspects of cinema, this pioneering series combines original perspectives and new method- ological paths with accessibility and coverage. Both “global” and “cinema” remain open to a range of approaches and interpretations, new and traditional. Books pub- lished in the series sustain a specific concern with the medium of cinema but do not defensively protect the boundaries of film studies, recognizing that film exists in a converging media environment.
