Immediate Release CA23/2015 Ngong Ping 360 X Ip Man 3 – Novel Immediate Release CA23/2015 Ngong Ping 360 x Ip Man 3 – novel tourism-film crossover project The world’s first Ip Man Experience Hall to debut at Ngong Ping 360 Donnie Yen makes first appearance at Stage 360 to motivate Hong Kong’s stuntmen (Hong Kong, 2 October 2015) As a world-class tourist attraction in Hong Kong, Ngong Ping 360 is an advocate of local art and show business, continually rolling out new initiatives to attract visitors. Further to our first-ever collaboration with Mr Raman Hui, the “Father of Shrek” in relation to his movie Monster Hunt, we are now partnering with Pegasus Motion Pictures Limited in a crossover project based on its movie Ip Man 3. The project will involve a series of activities designed to provide guests with a refreshing sensory tourism experience. Ngong Ping 360 and Ip Man 3 movie series both hail from Hong Kong and have earned worldwide acclaim. Ngong Ping 360 was named among “10 of the world’s most amazing cable car experiences” by CNN.com in the USA and selected as one of the “Cable cars: 10 amazing rides around the world” by the Daily Telegraph in the UK. With a similar amount of international renown, the Ip Man movie series is an exemplar of Chinese-language movies. This crossover project will bolster the development of Hong Kong’s tourism and film industries, and enhance the status of professional stuntmen in the industry. The world’s first Ip Man Experience Hall to promote the Hong Kong Spirit A highlight of Ngong Ping 360 x Ip Man 3 is the world’s first Ip Man Experience Hall, which will be unveiled on 26 November at Ngong Ping Village. The exhibition will run from 27 November 2015 to 31 January 2016, showcasing selected scenes from Ip Man 3, costumes of the main casts and featured exhibits. Using an advanced augmented reality mobile app, guests will be able to make free downloads and enter the Ip Man 3 movie world. After scanning the QR code with their mobile phones, guests will then be able to take photos with the actors appearing on their phones’ screens. 1/12 Guests holding a Ngong Ping Stage Pass or Stage 360 ticket will receive a price reduction of HK$10 when purchasing an Ip Man 3 movie ticket. Likewise, with every Ip Man 3 movie ticket, guests will receive a price reduction of HK$10 when purchasing a Ngong Ping Stage Pass or Stage 360 ticket. We will also launch a treasure hunt game during the exhibition period. Guests who locate the 10 lost wing chun scripts among the 108 scripts will receive a movie-themed souvenir. At a press conference today announcing the project, Ngong Ping 360 Managing Director Dr Stella Kwan, Chairman of Pegasus Entertainment Holdings Limited and Ip Man 3 Producer Mr Raymond Wong and the movie’s lead actor Mr Donnie Yen shared the concepts, objectives and details behind the collaboration. Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr Gregory So and Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) Executive Director Mr Anthony Lau were also present to show their support for the continual innovation and sustainable development of the tourism industry. Dr Kwan said that “Ngong Ping 360 is a world-class tourist attraction. We are happy to collaborate with Ip Man 3 for yet another novel crossover project between the tourism and film industries. Ngong Ping 360 and the Ip Man movie series both hail from Hong Kong, and are well received by overseas tourists and local audiences. We have much in common and have built rapport swiftly. Leveraging our synergy, we will be able to create a multi-sensory experience with a distinctive Hong Kong style. We hope that this crossover project will attract more local citizens and visitors, and inject new elements into Hong Kong tourism.” Mr So praised Ngong Ping 360 for its efforts in advocating Hong Kong tourism development. He said, “Ngong Ping 360 is a unique attraction in Hong Kong. It has often come up with brand new ideas to offer guests amazing travel experiences on top of its world-class cable car journey. We are glad that Ngong Ping 360 has kept up its efforts to drive innovation during the current challenging situation. This crossover project with the film industry will give impetus to the long term development of both industries.” Mr Lau said that the HKTB fully supports the project and noted that “Ngong Ping 360 x Ip Man 3 will be a promotional highlight project of this year’s Hong Kong WinterFest. As winter is usually a peak tourist season, the HKTB will invite travel industry and media delegations to come to Hong Kong and learn about local tourist attractions and special features. HKTB hopes to attract overseas guests to 2/12 Ngong Ping 360’s Ip Man Experience Hall by introducing the collaboration through HKTB’s official website, social media platforms and publication materials.” Mr Wong said he looked forward to the project. “The life philosophy behind Ip Man echoes the Lion Rock spirit: one should never give up no matter how difficult the situation is, one should always confront challenges courageously and one should help the weak with all one’s might. Likewise, in the tourist and film industries or industries of any other kind in Hong Kong, consistent perseverance and a can-do spirit we will overcome the difficulties and hardship caused of the current adverse social and economic climate. Like many filmmakers in Hong Kong, with their unyielding and indomitable spirit, mainland-Hong Kong co-production have grown in the past few years, which has helped Hong Kong’s film industry to recover. We long to see our industry blossom and attract larger audiences to local movies.” Donnie Yen makes first appearance at Stage 360 to motivate Hong Kong’s stuntmen Similar to Ngong Ping 360, Mr Donnie Yen is a keen supporter of the long-term development of Hong Kong’s tourism and film industries. To support Stage 360, he attended the show and personally encouraged a group of hardworking Hong Kong stuntmen. He said that “many artists are not able to showcase their expertise due to external limitations. Stage 360 provides a platform for talented stuntmen to shine, and offers them an opportunity to perform in front of international audiences. I am happy to see that stuntmen at Stage 360 are able to demonstrate creativity within a limited space, through such innovations as a single actor playing multiple roles and even operating more than 10 sets of wires and changing scenes vigorously. These are all testament to the Hong Kong spirit of hard work and perseverance.” Ngong Ping 360 x Ip Man 3 provides dedicated care to the community Ngong Ping 360 x Ip Man 3 has also incorporated an element of community care into the project. Through liaison with and recruitment efforts by Tung Chung Safe and Healthy City, Ngong Ping 360 provided complimentary cable car rides and Stage 360 tickets to 70 students from the Tung Chung Catholic School (Primary Section). During their visit, the students participated in an interactive kung fu session led by Mr Donnie Yen. Furthermore, guests who purchase a Ngong Ping Stage Pass or Stage 360 ticket from 27 November 2015 to 31 January 2016 will gain free admission to the Ip Man Experience Hall. Ngong Ping 360 will donate 10% of proceeds from the package and ticket sales during the period, after deducting operating costs, to The Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong, on behalf of both Ngong Ping 360 and 3/12 Pegasus Motion Pictures Limited. Apart from visiting the Ip Man Experience Hall and watching the kung fu performance at Stage 360, guests will be able to contribute to helping the underprivileged of the community. Dr Kwan added that “with the slowdown of inbound tourists, visitor numbers to Ngong Ping 360 this summer dropped 9% from the same period last year. During July and August, guests from mainland China accounted for 34% for the total, guests from Western and other Asian countries comprised 44% and local guests took up 22%. With the Ngong Ping 360 x Ip Man 3 project, we believe we will attract more international and local guests to Ngong Ping 360.” About Ngong Ping 360 As an important tourist attraction located on Lantau Island in Hong Kong, Ngong Ping 360 offers an exciting opportunity for guests to experience a unique natural and cultural experience. The Ngong Ping Cable Car stretches 5.7km from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping. Guests can visit the Chinese architecturally designed Ngong Ping Village, where they can enjoy a range of dining, shopping and entertainment options and culturally themed attractions including “Stage 360”, “Motion 360” and “Walking with Buddha”. The Ngong Ping Cable Car is a rare example of a bi-cable gondola circulating lift system, and is also the biggest aerial cable car of its kind in Asia. It offers a visually spectacular 25- minute journey with panoramic views of the flora and fauna of North Lantau Country Park, Tung Chung Bay and the Hong Kong International Airport. Ngong Ping 360 received the CILT Award 2013 – Enterprise Award presented by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport in Hong Kong (CILTHK) in May 2014. It was also selected as one of the “Cable cars: 10 amazing rides around the world” in June 2014 by The Daily Telegraph UK and named as amongst “10 of the world’s most amazing cable car experiences” by CNN.com USA in February 2015. About Stage 360 Stage 360 was established in August 2014, officiated by Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers Mr Ng See Yuen.

David Martin-Jones KEYWORDS Ip Man, Deleuze, recollection-image, martial arts, physical memory, Chinese diaspora. ABSTRACT This article explores how Gilles Deleuze’s conceptualization of the flashback, as ‘recollection-image’, can assist our understanding of the rendering spectacular of physical memory in contemporary Chinese martial arts movies. The focus is a prominent flashback in the climactic duel in the kung fu movie, Yip Man/Ip Man (Yip, 2008). This recollection-image demonstrates how trained bodies in Chinese martial art movies suggest a slightly different understanding of time and affect from that which Deleuze formulated, based on his observation of US and European films. On textual, cultural and historical levels this article explores the usefulness of martial arts movies for developing our understanding of physicality in cinema, and for reconsidering Deleuze’s ideas in light of the Eurocentrism of some of his conclusions.

When the officer decides to host the “King of Boxing Competition”, East meets West, racial tensions flare and the reputation of Wushu is at stake. book reviews 223 Benjamin N. Judkins and Jon Nielson The Creation of Wing Chun: A Social History of the Southern Chinese Martial Arts. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 2015. pp. 364. $26.95. ISBN 978-1438456942. This outstanding book is the first scholarly examination of the history of a modern Chinese martial art in a Western language. While many of the modern Japanese martial arts have been documented and described, no similar work exists for the myriad of modern Chinese martial arts. Perhaps more impor- tantly, The Creation of Wing Chun is a social history that places the formation and development of the internationally known martial art of Wing Chun in a time and place. Judkins and Nielson have managed to produce a history that is an enjoyable read built on a sound historical foundation. It is a story that says as much about twentieth and early twenty-first century China as about a particular school of fighting. At its root is the history of the development of a Guangdong and Hong Kong identity in the form of a particular martial arts style. That identity formed in contrast to a monolithic Chinese nationality. Wing Chun was distinct and so was the region and culture that produced it. The book also places the history of Wing Chun at the center of a broader story about the place of martial arts in late imperial and twentieth century Chinese society. As the wider, modern, Western world intruded into southern Chinese society, the role of “hand combat” in that environment was called into question.

  • Historicizing Martial Arts Cinema in Postcolonial Hong Kong: the Ip Man Narratives
IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 4 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Historicizing Martial Arts Cinema in Postcolonial Hong Kong: The Ip Man Narratives Jing Yang, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China Abstract: The surge of Hong Kong martial arts films in the new millennium transformed the classic genre with a keen consciousness of history. Based loosely on the life experiences of the Cantonese master Ip Man (1893–1972), Ip Man (Yip, 2008) and The Grandmaster (Wong, 2013) utilize the genre to examine the dynamics between Hong Kong and mainland China by integrating the personal with the national. Against the shifting industrial and cultural orientations of Hong Kong cinema and society, the paper argues that the multifarious discourses in both films exemplify the effort to construct a post-colonial identity in negotiation with mainland China. Keywords: Hong Kong martial arts cinema, history, national discourse, postcolonial identity 59 IAFOR Journal of Cultural Studies Volume 4 – Issue 2 – Autumn 2019 Introduction The martial arts trainer of Bruce Lee, Ip Man (1893–1972), has become a recurrent subject matter of Hong Kong cinema more than a decade after China’s resumption of sovereignty over the territory. In a string of Ip Man films released from 2008 to 2015 (Ip Man [Yip, 2010, 2015], The Legend is Born: Ip Man [Yau, 2010], Ip Man: The Final Fight [Yau, 2013] and a 50- episode TV drama Ip Man [Fan, 2013]), Wilson Yip’s Ip Man (2008) and Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster (2013) recount the life experiences of the Cantonese master whose legacy is the global popularity of Wing Chun art.
