  • Europea NEO Brussels BRUSSELS
Europea NEO Brussels BRUSSELS Working with masterplanners KCAP and architects Jean-Paul Viguier, Gustafson Porter’s work at Europea Neo Brussels (‘Europea’) will create high-quality landscape within a new 68-hectare high-end mixed-use district surrounding the Roi Baudoin stadium. Our landscape design ensures this new district integrates into the surrounding urban fabric of Brussels and is chiefly comprised of the areas around the Mall of Europe, Europea gardens and the Euroville Park, home of the iconic Atomium. The design consists of large public spaces and a series of water features which offer rest areas, promenades and playgrounds for children. Our work on the Atomium Esplanade will create a spectacular space where waterfalls complement large lawns, offering a new perspective on the Atomium and the wider Heysel plateau. Won in international competition in 2012 the development was led by Jean-Paul Viguier Associés (France), with Gustafson Porter as landscape architect. The project has been developed by Unibail-Rodamco SE, BESIX and CFE, and encompasses 500 residential units, a 3.5ha park and 112.000m² dedicated to leisure, restaurants, an art district and the retail precinct “Mall of Europe”, a 72000m2 shopping centre which includes 9000m2 of restaurant and leisure facilities. It is estimated to receive 12-15 million visitors a year and is envisaged as a ‘smart city’ with high standards of environmental design. Full completion is expected at the end of 2021. “Development of the city must be organised to enable it to meet the great demo- graphic, economic and social challenges of the next ten years, and to position itself firmly as a cosmopolitan metropolis and capital of Europe.

Bruxelles, Thursday, March 28th 2019 D-100: THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS Key points: ➢ The Grand Départ of Le Tour will take place in a little more than three months’ time, on 6th July, and Brussels is already focused on a doubly historic Tour de France for the Belgians. The centenary of the Yellow Jersey also corresponds with the fiftieth anniversary of when its most prestigious wearer, Eddy Merckx, made his first appearance on the race. “The Cannibal” will once again be honoured in the Belgian capital. ➢ Throughout France, the stage hosting towns and cities on 2019 Tour de France will be decked out in Yellow, just like the Thalys high-speed train that made its first journey between Paris and Brussels in its luminous new livery. ➢ The D-100 festivities will continue tomorrow with the third edition of Dictée du Tour, which brought together 10,000 pupils last year to test their mettle against each other on texts about the Tour de France. CITIES OF LIGHT EVERYWHERE! As we get closer the start of the 2019 edition of the Tour de France, the stage host towns and cities preparing to welcome the riders are celebrating by illuminating their monuments or giving pride of place to the Yellow Jersey in their own special way. Among the illuminations that started yesterday and which will regularly continue to light up these towns and cities until the arrival of Le Tour, the spirit of the Yellow Jersey has especially illuminated the rocks in Saint-Flour, the Garabit viaduct, the town hall in Colmar, the Saint-Julien basilica in Brioude, the town hall in Mâcon, the Opera house and Subé fountain in Reims, the ramparts in Binche, the castle in Pau, the obelisk in Châlon.

PRESS KIT Brussels, 31 May 2019 Brussels by bike 2019 is a year like no other for Brussels. This year Brussels is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Tour de France victory of Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx, as well as being the starting point (Grand Départ) for the 2019 Tour de France. A unique occasion for the European capital to both celebrate cycling and honour its cultural heritage. Cycling in Brussels Brussels boasts no less than 218km of cycle paths. The Brussels-Capital region has seen the number of cyclists double over the last five years. This upward trend, observed since the beginning of the century, has continued with an average annual increase of 13% since 2010. (source: Brussels Bike Observatory). Brussels has changed over the years, and has given more and more space to bikes. The infrastructure still isn't perfect, but things are improving every year. Laying out cycle paths, creating new parking for bikes, increasing the 30km/h zones...there have been many initiatives, both public and private, to encourage the people of Brussels to get on their bikes. Bike for Brussels With Bike for Brussels, Brussels Mobility (regional public service in charge of transport throughout the whole Brussels-Capital region) aims to put Brussels residents in the saddle. In order to do this, the service is supporting several Brussels organisations who promote cycling in the capital. Good parking maps, suggestions of routes to get around the city safely or even key bike-repair places, these organisations communicate with cyclists every day to make cycling in the city easier for them.

Press conference Brussels, 26 October 2009 Fresh Ambition for Brussels Development and Regeneration of the Heysel Plateau Competition : 8 architecture companies chosen www.neobrussels.com 1 NEO: An International Future for the Heysel Plateau On 22 October 2009, the Mayor and City Council named the 8 architecture companies chosen to submit a specific redevelopment plan for the Heysel Plateau. Out of the 28 companies that put themselves forward in response to the invitation to tender issued in June, 8 were chosen based on objective criteria and according to the transparent procedure initiated by the Council’s three-person project steering committee – Mr Thielemans, Mr Ceux and Mr Close. This means that the NEO project is now getting to the heart of the matter: the chosen architects are now going to work on specific redevelopment ideas to make Heysel into a major international centre in Brussels. www.neobrussels.com 2 I. NEO or the Redevelopment of the Heysel Plateau The Mayor of the City of Brussels, Freddy Thielemans, has always advertised his clear intention to develop and redevelop the northern strategic centre on the Heysel Plateau. The redevelopment involves the creation of new infrastructure on the site, and probably relocation and repurposing of some of the pre-existing facilities. The key elements that the redevelopment should incorporate include an international convention centre, a major shopping centre, a 15,000-seat concert hall and a leisure centre to reinforce the appeal of the site. The Mayor and City Council of the City of Brussels expressly wanted to make this redevelopment project a model of transparency and good governance.

(Hint: It’s Not the route) Since the 2019 Tour de France route was unveiled last week, speculation of who will benefit from the time trial-light course has been rampant. Two major narratives have emerged since the release of the course details. The first is that ASO has designed a course with minimal time trials and a preference for shorter, punchier climbs to benefit homegrown contenders like Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot. The second is that the arbiter of the race, Christian Prudhomme and ASO, are tired of watching Team Sky send out their formidable armada of word class riders to sit on the front of the peloton for three weeks with a pace that inevitably and methodically asphyxiates the competition. ASO, the centerpiece of the French cycling establishment, would certainly prefer a French winner of the national tour, and it is no secret that Sky’s stranglehold on the Tour since 2012 has stolen some of the race’s iconic luster. However, the assertion that ASO is tipping the scales in an attempt to foil the British squad has some major flaws. The first major flaw in this argument is that if the French organization truly wanted to put the brakes on Sky’s dominance, they surely wouldn’t have included a 27km team time trial on the second stage. While Sky has never won a TTT at the Tour, the event has seen them solidify their GC leads whenever the event has been included in the route (2013, 2015, and 2018).
