Issy-Les-Moulineaux, Mardi 4 Septembre 2012 Bruxelles, Thursday, March 28th 2019 D-100: THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS Key points: ➢ The Grand Départ of Le Tour will take place in a little more than three months’ time, on 6th July, and Brussels is already focused on a doubly historic Tour de France for the Belgians. The centenary of the Yellow Jersey also corresponds with the fiftieth anniversary of when its most prestigious wearer, Eddy Merckx, made his first appearance on the race. “The Cannibal” will once again be honoured in the Belgian capital. ➢ Throughout France, the stage hosting towns and cities on 2019 Tour de France will be decked out in Yellow, just like the Thalys high-speed train that made its first journey between Paris and Brussels in its luminous new livery. ➢ The D-100 festivities will continue tomorrow with the third edition of Dictée du Tour, which brought together 10,000 pupils last year to test their mettle against each other on texts about the Tour de France. CITIES OF LIGHT EVERYWHERE! As we get closer the start of the 2019 edition of the Tour de France, the stage host towns and cities preparing to welcome the riders are celebrating by illuminating their monuments or giving pride of place to the Yellow Jersey in their own special way. Among the illuminations that started yesterday and which will regularly continue to light up these towns and cities until the arrival of Le Tour, the spirit of the Yellow Jersey has especially illuminated the rocks in Saint-Flour, the Garabit viaduct, the town hall in Colmar, the Saint-Julien basilica in Brioude, the town hall in Mâcon, the Opera house and Subé fountain in Reims, the ramparts in Binche, the castle in Pau, the obelisk in Châlon. View the full slide show A THALYS TRAIN IN LE TOUR’S COLOURS This morning, a Thalys train with a brand-new style made a noticeable entrance into the Bruxelles-Midi station to be welcomed by Bertrand Gosselin, Thalys CEO, Eddy Merckx and Christian Prudhomme. Although the riders will have to wait to start their journey on 6th July, this train, with one of the carriages entirely redecorated in the colours of the Tour de France and its Grand Départ, will be making many voyages on the high-speed network until 28th July, when the pack arrives at the Champs-Elysées in Paris. In total, it will cover tens of thousands of kilometres, with thousands of passengers on board! EDDY MERCKX SQUARE IN WOLUWE-SAINT-PIERRE The centenary celebrations for the creation of the Yellow Jersey also correspond with the fiftieth anniversary of Eddy Merckx’s first victory. These two milestones will come together in Woluwe-Saint- Pierre, one of the boroughs of Brussels, where the young boy who grew up to taste triumph spent his youth. The new Eddy Merckx square has been officially inaugurated in the neighbourhood where his family ran a grocer’s shop, pending the installation of a copy of Belgian artist Stefaan de Croock’s work entitled “Tribute to Eddy Merckx”. BICYCLE WEEKEND IN BRUSSELS Brussels’ annual 24-hour cycling meeting for amateur cyclists held in the Bois de la Cambre woods will be devoted to the Tour de France this year. Approximately 6,000 participants are expected for this crazy race, where Eddy Merckx himself will be giving starter’s orders Saturday 30th March at 11.30. All the week-end and the following day, the Place De Brouckère will be taken over for and by Tour de France enthusiasts, with demonstrations and introductions to extreme cycling, exhibitions and bicycle rides through the city. A € 2.5 COIN FOR THE GRAND DÉPART As part of the festivities surrounding the Grand Départ, a special €2.5 euro coin will be issued by the Royal Mint of Belgium on the theme of the Tour de France. This sporty-looking collector’s item, which comes complete with a “coin-card”, will be legal tender in Belgium and can be bought from the web site www.herdenkingsmunten.be. Brussels has changed over the years, and has given more and more space to bikes. The infrastructure still isn't perfect, but things are improving every year. Laying out cycle paths, creating new parking for bikes, increasing the 30km/h zones...there have been many initiatives, both public and private, to encourage the people of Brussels to get on their bikes. Bike for Brussels With Bike for Brussels, Brussels Mobility (regional public service in charge of transport throughout the whole Brussels-Capital region) aims to put Brussels residents in the saddle. In order to do this, the service is supporting several Brussels organisations who promote cycling in the capital. Good parking maps, suggestions of routes to get around the city safely or even key bike-repair places, these organisations communicate with cyclists every day to make cycling in the city easier for them.

(Hint: It’s Not the route) Since the 2019 Tour de France route was unveiled last week, speculation of who will benefit from the time trial-light course has been rampant. Two major narratives have emerged since the release of the course details. The first is that ASO has designed a course with minimal time trials and a preference for shorter, punchier climbs to benefit homegrown contenders like Romain Bardet and Thibaut Pinot. The second is that the arbiter of the race, Christian Prudhomme and ASO, are tired of watching Team Sky send out their formidable armada of word class riders to sit on the front of the peloton for three weeks with a pace that inevitably and methodically asphyxiates the competition. ASO, the centerpiece of the French cycling establishment, would certainly prefer a French winner of the national tour, and it is no secret that Sky’s stranglehold on the Tour since 2012 has stolen some of the race’s iconic luster. However, the assertion that ASO is tipping the scales in an attempt to foil the British squad has some major flaws. The first major flaw in this argument is that if the French organization truly wanted to put the brakes on Sky’s dominance, they surely wouldn’t have included a 27km team time trial on the second stage. While Sky has never won a TTT at the Tour, the event has seen them solidify their GC leads whenever the event has been included in the route (2013, 2015, and 2018).

    Tour de France 2020 The Tour de France is the world’s most famous, and arguably the hardest, cycling race. It takes place every year and lasts for a total of three weeks, covering almost 3500km. History of the Race During the late 19th century, cycling became a popular hobby for many people. As time went on, organised bike races were introduced, and professional cycling became very popular in France. On 6th July 1903, 60 cyclists set off on a race and covered 2428km in a circular route over six stages. 18 days after setting off, only 21 of the original 60 cyclists made it back to the finish line in Paris. The winner was Maurice Garin and this was to be the beginning of the ‘Tour de France’. Except for war time, the race has taken place every year since then and has become more challenging with the addition of mountain climbs and longer distances. The Modern Tour de France The tour begins in a different place each year. The route changes annually too, though usually finishes on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. In 2020, the race starts in Nice in France and ends in Paris after 21 different stages with the riders covering a distance of 3470km. It usually takes place in June and July but this year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the start had to be delayed until 29th August. It will finish on the 20th September. There are 22 teams taking part in the Tour de France, each with eight riders. The reigning champion is Egan Bernal from Columbia.

    The Outer Line The External Perspective On Pro Cycling The 2020https://www.theouterline.com Tour De France Will Be Won in the ITT, Not the Climbs The route for the 2020 Tour de France was recently unveiled. The initial takeaways seemed to be that it is a time trial-light affair that will tend to suit the pure climbers, and that its multiple mountain stages will somehow offer bite-sized, endless entertainment for the short-attention-span millennial audience. A closer look suggests that it probably won’t be that simple. The general consensus is that 2020 will be one for the climbers, as the race features a large number of mountain stages with a healthy dose of summit finishes, just one 36-kilometer individual time trial, and only a handful of stages for the sprinters. Also, as in 2019, there will be time bonuses at the finish and on select penultimate climbs. These characteristics seem likely to combine to create a race that will favor riders who can climb with the best, who can handle technical descents, and who can make split-second tactical decisions on the road, particularly in the event of crosswinds. The problem with this narrative is that it doesn’t really take into account two of the most defining trends of the modern grand tour – (1) world-class time trialists slimming down to extremely light weights in order to win grand tours or, more rarely, (2) natural climbers honing their TT craft to the point where they don’t lose significant time in the race against the clock.

This is the same number of countries as last year because, in spite of many efforts, we were unlucky to find sources or contact persons in new markets. Any help in this respect is very welcome. • The analysis is based on a self‐constructed dataset containing detailed TV viewership information for about 1900 broadcasts of cycling races in 2019 including over 70 broadcasts of women’s pro cycling races and approximately 400 Tour de France broadcasts. Our dataset contains about 200 observations more than in 2018. • Information for this report was mainly collected from public sources. For some markets though the inside help from journalists and media people was needed and highly appreciated.
