The third chakra is the seat of our personal power, our free will and our life force. It is where our ego lives and our sense of empowerment originates. It is the powerhouse for the self, and determines how we see our place in the world.

Here we will explore our sense of self and our egos, our will power and self esteem as well and seeing how closely related this chakra is to our instincts.

Solar Energy As we move up to the third chakra it is important that we recognise the connection between all the and how the first two earthly chakras have bought us here. The Chakra gave us stability and focus and a groundedness of form - a unity. The Svadhisthana Chakra bought movement, passion, choice, desire and duality expanding us beyond merely existing, toward pleasure and togetherness.

When we take both of these together - matter and movement - we can begin to create energy. Like rubbing sticks together we can create combustion which in physical terms is our and in psychological terms is our enthusiasm, power, will and activity. The "doing" part of us.

The purpose of this chakra - the Manipura - is transformation. The passive elements of earth and water transforming into power and energy. Whilst earth and water will always be subject to gravity and will move downward, this third chakra moves upward like flames, taking us onward and upward on our journey on the Chakra Way!

It is with the use of our WILL that we can begin to find change and continue to grow. In order to release ourselves from well-worn behavioural, and thought, patterns we have to find the strength of will to affect change. Overcoming inertia is the toughest part of this process and getting to know this powerhouse chakra will help us make a start.

We must direct our energy - whilst our solar rising energy empowers us we must bring intentionality by incorporating descending currents of intention from our higher selves and chakras. When these two forces of energy and intention combine that is where we find our POWER. Manipura in action

The health of this solar plexus chakra can be seen in several ways. Physically, we need to look at the solar plexus area which encompasses the area from the lower sternum to the belly button and includes our digestive system. We can look at this area of our bodies to see what state this chakra is in. A large belly often indicates a large ego! The desire to dominate and control and have all the power or even the overblown egotistical need to occupy space. We can all see how common this is! A sunken diaphragm and sunken abdomen can indicate a fear of taking power, or standing out - a literal shrinking back in to the self. Excessive weight can indicate a malfunctioning chakra as the metabolism is not making food in to energy but storing it as fat.

This chakra governs our metabolism and digestive systems - the easily understood combustion of matter (food) into energy (action and heat). As such issues as diabetes, hypoglycemia or any issues such as ulcers, irritable bowel sydrome, colitis, as well as issues with liver and pancreas, relate directly to this centre. We can study ourselves in this chakra by looking at its element - fire. Are you often cold? Do you like hot or cold drinks? Do you crave spicy hot foods or avoid them? Do you sweat easily? Do you suffer with fever or chills when you're not well? Are you quick and energetic or slow and lathargic?

To fully comprehend the solar plexus chakra it is important to have an understanding of the autonomous nervous system of our bodies. These are the automatic systems within us that regulate bodily processes such as heartbeat, and breathing. The autonomous nervous system responds to external factors and to a delicate balance of action or stimulation and relaxation.

There are two sides of the autonomous nervous system that are vital to us - the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response) which will ready the body for action, increase heart rate and glucose, and the parasympathetic nervous system, which enables the body to relax, promotes digestion and lowers heart rate. In our practice it is the 'rest and digest' parasympathetic nervous system that we are encouraging to become prevalent.

Our parasympathetic nervous system is very clearly linked to the and the fight or flight response that is also closely linked to our Muladhara Chakra. Here, we begin to see the inter-weaving and connectedness of the chakras. Understanding the autonomous nervous system allows us to consider the Enteric Nervous System - the part of our nervous system that operates our gastrointestinal system. There are hundreds of millions of neurons connecting the brain to the enteric nervous system - it is scientifically accepted that it is like a second brain! This mind-gut connection monitors our hunger levels, our stress levels and whether we have ingested something bad and extends from our esophagus to our anus.

Whilst it cannot write a symphony or paint a picture it will tell us when we are scared, nervous, anxious, stressed... We have commonly used expressions that show that we know our stomach has a brain! We have learnt to trust our guts, to listen to our gut instinct. Stress can be "gut wrenching", "stomach churning", or give us "butterflies in the tummy".

The Enteric Nervous System, which is this gut instinct, can operate without direct signalling from the Central Nervous System. This can be linked to a deep internal listening and reflection of the self-esteem, ego and personality and is in essence intuition.

Our cranial brain is analytical, good at learning, thoughts, memories and practicalities whereas our "belly brain" processes emotions, moods, intuition and information outside the radar of the cranial brain. Directing our Energy

There is quite a nice clear path that we can follow with finding where we are with this chakra. It is like a chain reaction that we will look at here and then go in to more detail on each step of this path.

First, we must light the fire of the solar plexus chakra and we get the flame burning just right. We then have the energy to be active and assert our personal power into actually doing, into action. Once we have our personal power in action we must use our will to direct it in the right way and here we find aligned action where we have conjured our energy and are using it intentionally to get our desired outcome. Once this has been achieved we find that our self-esteem will be strong and we can continue this cycle and keep our solar plexus energy spinning effectively. Fire

Our internal flame lives here in our Manipura and like the heat of fire it will help us create transformation which is the action of this chakra.

We all know that fire can be dangerous and needs to be managed carefully and so it is with our internal flame. You may well have a fire in your house. You keep it well tended - if it burns out of control then your house might burn down and if it is too weak then you will be cold and miserable. Similarly if you have a gas cooker you can easily control the flame to get the desired outcome for whatever you are cooking. But you need to know what the outcome is that you want! Do you want a gentle simmer or a searing heat? What is the goal of the flame? Like a gas cooker we can turn the dial of our internal flame.

To adjust our flame we can use the chakras above and below the solar plexus chakra.

Below we have the watery sacral chakra - so if our flame is burning too high and hot we can cool it with the water of the sacral chakra, soothing the fierce flames with pleasure and fun. Just imagine yourself, super stressed, your flame blazing, you may be angry, controlling... if you were to purposefully and mindfully decide to have some fun - dance around your office, do something creative - then you can imagine how that anger and stress might dissolve. Fire

Above the solar plexus we have the Heart chakra, whose element is air. If our fire is going out or weak we may feel that we are not good enough, powerless or that we have nothing to give. If this is the case then we can flex our heart chakra qualities of self love and self acceptance in order to fan the flames of our Manipura chakra.

If our solar plexus fire burns to strongly then we might literally suffer from "burn out", we will be fatigued, utterly (and literally) exhausted. The other side of this coin is that with the fire burning too fiercely that it will show up as anger controlling issues, domination and aggression - an obvious combustion! Personal Power

It is easy to see how imbalances in this chakra can display themselves in very different ways and can affect our personal power.

Personal power is an inside job. We cannot look to external forces to influence it. Our aim is to be productive and purposeful and this is a self-fulfilling cycle. We create our personal power through DOING! We then have the momentum to grow and continue expanding and become more productive.

But all this has to start somewhere! So where to start? If we feel our personal power is a small, weak little thing then we need to start small. Simply doing an action that matters - anything that has improved your existence or that of someone else - actually making a tangible difference is key. Even if it just tidying your desk or making that call that you have been putting off can kick- start your personal power.

Power is directed energy. However, todays society, education and common parenting methods suggest that conformity, obedience and co-operation are preferred. If this is reinforced with domination or subjugation then the sense of personal power is suppressed. Personal Power

Power issues in our world are rife. With the advent of tech, media, massive corporations, organised governments and nuclear weapons we know that there are very few people who hold a lot of the power. This kind of power is "power over" and we want to make the move toward "power to". When we see our world ruled by these few strangers, our voice feels very tiny, too small to be heard and this reinforces estrangement making individuals easy to control and causing us to lose the concept of power within. When this happens we get stuck in our repetitive lower chakras without being able to change, unable to connect with our enthusiasm, our will and our desires and getting stuck with sameness and clinging to security. In this scenario we see why many people are living in a submissive paradigm - we submit to our parents, our teachers, our bosses, law enforcement and government. Obviously a certain amount of cooperation is required for social purposes but if this submission is fully internalised then connection with the inner will is lost and individuals find themselves powerless.

Without this internal power we may find ourselves drawn to destructive behaviours such as seeking constant stimulation in the form of alcohol or drugs or being afraid to slow down and feel the emptiness inside. Or we may focus our actions on gaining approval, being seen and having our ego bolstered. Our power needs purpose and this is where our will becomes important. Will

Our self will is our way of directing our personal power. Will is consciously controlled change. There is INTENTION with will.

At our first and second chakras our desires are to move away from pain toward pleasure - this is the basic desire that fuels our will. We might desire better health, more money, a new career, a nice holiday - and all these things come from our sacral, pleasure and fun seeking chakra. However, if the intention does not chime with, or indeed, originate from, our higher consciousness, the desire is just a whim.

Our desires rise from the sacral chakra, our intentions come down from the crown chakra and they meet at the solar plexus chakra where action can take place, using our will to direct that action appropriately to give it direction. In the manipura we house the heat and fire to make transformations required to set in motion changes and developments in order to make your will manifest.

So how do we 'make something happen'? There's no point sitting around waiting for it to fall into our laps - we must affect actual change. We must exercise our will. Will

Will can be seen as simply making choices. How good are you at making decisions..?

At our second chakra our feelings may have been hurt making us feel powerless, a victim of circumstances. But we can decide to see these feelings of pain and powerlessness as a necessary step putting us in touch with our needs which can in turn become fuel for our will. If we choose to blame others then we are giving them the power, waiting for others to change before our lot improves. This we cannot control! When we decide to take back that control and take responsibility then we can start to use our will to make changes and shed the victim status. That is not to deny that victimisation does happen but to recognise that we can use each challenge that comes our way as an opportunity to wake up to our potential.

Here seems an apt place to remind ourselves that we can't control what happens to us, but we can control how we respond to it.

In order to tap into our will be have to overcome inertia. We all know that a person who exercises regularly will have more energy, and so it is with will power. Energy begets energy and it is the will that starts this momentum. Will

We've all heard someone say "Oh, I've no will power at all!" and this is patently nonsense! The first step in developing our will is to acknowledge its existence. We have all created our current lives using our will, but we often fail to recognise our will.

We often tell ourselves - I have to go to work, I've got to do the washing up, etc. This is very disempowering to state that you have no choice in these matters or that they are a dreary obligation. Consider the fact that you choose to go to work because you like getting paid or that you choose to do the washing up because you like a clean kitchen! A subtle shift in attitude will align us with our will.

Even if you are doing something that you don't want to do it is an exercise in getting to know your will - you can ask yourself why am I doing this? Am I trying to please? Am I doing this because I was scared of the consequences of not doing it?

Once we start asking questions we can start to see who or what our will is serving. Is it operating in the service of looking good? Being liked? Keeping the peace? Avoiding responsibility? Remaining invisible? Then once we have identified what our will might be serving we need to investigate what it is betraying. Is keeping the peace perpetuation negative circumstances that you should be confronting? Is pleasing others damaging your self esteem? Will

It can feel really scary to exercise our true will - our free will. It could risk ridicule or criticism or even abandonment. It is especially scary if our family paradigm was based on submission. We sometimes have to be a little daring so that we can start to use and strengthen the muscles of our will but we should do so wisely, trying to really listen to our higher selves. True will is not self-serving or egotistical and doesn't act for the sake of reward but for the 'rightness' of the action.

When we talk about listening to the 'higher self' some may stray in to the territory of using that concept to avoid using their will. Instead asking 'what does the Universe want me to do? I'm waiting for a sign!' or seeking guidance from others like psychics, therapists, guru or teacher. This is perfectly ok so long as it is not used as a way of avoiding responsibility!

Applying our will requires discipline but it is important that the discipline is led by the want and not the should in our internal dialogue. We need to carefully consider our purpose and to differentiate between will and whim. Whim is generally momentary whereas will has a larger purpose. Aligned Action and Self Esteem Once we have identified the state of our will and we begin to be confident in its/our purpose we can start to examine whether our actions are in line with it. When we are clear about what matters most and that we are acting towards a purpose that is not greedy or selfish but that serves our greater good, our actions will start to align with our will.

Then the domino effect of lighting the fire, connecting with our personal power, identifying our will and acting in alignment with that, will start to feed into our self esteem. In building this well or bedrock of self esteem we will have the strength and confidence to give ourselves momentum.

It is nigh on impossible to take action when self-esteem is low. Without feeling worthiness or enough-ness we can get stuck, debilitating us when action is required. If we allow shame - the demon of this chakra - to occupy us then we will be full of doubts and self recrimination. We then find ourselves wallowing in a pool of inertia which will paralyse us.

As Brene Brown so succinctly puts it "Shame corrodes the very part of us that believes we are capable of change". Our self esteem arises from a realistic sense of self. We need to use the the first three chakras to build our self esteem. If we can be at peace with our physical bodies and have healthy boundaries, be aware of our emotional identity and desires, and then also allow ourselves to take risks, to fail and succeed in order to measure our abilities, we can start to build our self esteem.

Our sense of self esteem is often caught up in others. We may perceive that others have a certain view of us and this may dampen our self esteem. However, if we are loved and loving (fourth chakra work), and communicate well gaining useful feedback (fifth chakra work) we are more likely to be able to love ourselves, and communicate with our interior self in a positive way. If our earthly chakras - root, sacral and solar plexus - are balanced then we don't need external validation, nor to we need our partner or anyone else to make us feel secure, interpret our feelings or bolster our ego. Shame It is worth having a moment to consider this chakras demon of shame. It may well be that in your childhood or as a young person the figures of authority around you used shame to control you. Even if we just received very little approval or respect that might have led us to feel that we were not enough and therefore feel shame.

Shame can take several forms. Inward facing where we self- criticise which might lead to issues with drink and drugs and self abuse or self- punishment which leads to introverted behaviour and in this chakra eating disorders. Outward facing shame can take the form of criticism of others which can be aggressive or even violent or extreme extroverted behaviour such as vandalism.

When we are children we constantly seek approval in order to work out what is acceptable and what is right and wrong. Parents can give these cues without eroded a child's self worth, by making the child feel loved even if their actions are not right.

When we seek approval from others as adults we are giving away our power. If our self esteem is entirely based on whether we make those around us pleased with us we will not be able to heal this chakra and find our own empowerment.

It is possible to still be seeking the approval of a parent even after they have died - we will find a replacement figure from whom we require approval. It is important work in this chakra to observe our shame and where it comes from, see it for what it is and calmly let go of it. Ego Ego is often seen as a derogatory term. If someone is said to have an ego we are usually implying that they are arrogant and power seeking. But our ego is our friend. We need a balanced ego to assist us in learning to grow, love and trust ourselves.

This chakra is associated with two age phases. The first is around toddler age when you realise that you are your own person and not attached to your mother - that you are in fact an autonomous being. We can often see the toddler ego being tested out on poor parents!

The second age phase is that from 15-21. During this phase of development we are beginning to find our sense of self and our place in the world. Where do we fit in? What is our purpose? During this age we are becoming an adult; we have responsibilities within our community and need to develop our sense of integrity. It is during this time that we start to develop our internal honour code. We begin our relationship with our will power which in turn will start to feed into our self esteem, our place in the wider world and the choices we make.

Teenagers of today have the extra challenge of being constantly appraised on social media. Seeking approval can become addictive and egos come to depend on it.

Face to face connection with another human triggers our mirror neurons which allow us to interpret facial expressions and body language and build connection. Meaningful connections engender empathy and it is cultivating empathy that will help the ego to become healthy and balanced. Finding your Power

We can start to balance the power within this chakra in a number of ways. We are looking for EMPOWERMENT. We don't want to be overpowering or underpowered. Understanding the processes we have already discussed is the first step but here are a few more practical ways of breaking powerlessness...

Break inertia - do something totally different, break repetitive patterns and challenge yourself. Failing is just as useful as succeeding if you learn a lesson. Power is not gained by holding on to what you know is safe.

Avoid Invalidation - receiving criticism from those who don't understand your situation can be crippling. Albert Einstein said "new ideas meet their greatest opposition from those who misunderstand them".

Recognise resistance - when you are putting in lots of effort and finding that it is wearing you down you are coming up against resistance. If the effort is straining then stop and ask yourself how to bring more flow. The likelihood is that resistance is your fear - so what are you afraid of? Imagine how it could be without any resistance and see if you can find effortless flow in your endeavours. Finding your Power

Give your attention - attention focuses energy. Give attention to yourself, to others and accept it from others too. Notice where your attention goes, as where the attention goes your energy is sure to follow!

Anger - let go your anger. You don't have to let it melt away, express it by punching a pillow, pushing a door frame, stomping your feet, yelling and screaming (not at anyone!) to discharge the anger energy.

Digestion - make sure that you keep your digestive system moving and healthy

Set intentions - every day on waking set an intention. Don't make it a massive to do list as you'll feel underwhelmed by yourself at the end of the day! Just set your intention to guide your will. Using a journal will really help you in this.

Laugh - taking things too seriously will make us lose touch with our power. If you can laugh at a situation you have power over it. When things get really bad, laugh at yourself! Finding your Power

Dress sharp. Wear clothes that make you feel confident!

Stand tall! Let your posture give you power.

Notice who makes you want to curl up in a little ball or run away!

Speak up for yourself when needed. Don’t always assume that others are right.

Trust your gut.

Seek out new experiences where you can grow your skills and grow your sense of confidence.

Switch up your daily routine. Removing yourself from your comfort zone will show you that you are in fact able to handle growth in a productive way.

Spend more time in the sun.

Sit around a fire! Light candles. Bring that element of warmth into your house.

Invite your fear to reveal itself to you and examine it with love.

Strengthen your core! NOTES/JOURNAL NOTES/JOURNAL SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA SYMBOLS

Each chakra has lots of different ways of accessing it. It is important that you identify which symbol resonates for YOU!

COLOUR

Yellow represents intellect and energy. This chakra is the solar chakra and so this glowing sun of yellow brings power, energy, focus and strength to us when we visualise it. The sense associated with this chakra is sight so use the colour yellow to connect. Ask how does it make you feel? It is traditionally a happy colour.

MINERALS OR GEMS The manipura chakra is represented by Amber which increases mental clarity and promotes confidence. Yellow Citrine is thought to increase personal empowerment and self esteem. Carnelian, Topaz, Malachite, and Yellow Sapphire help to support, contain and balance the fire energy in our Third Chakra.

FOOD This chakra is supported by starchy foods - energy giving foods! From the banana to complex carbohydrates such as brown rice and sweet potato. All the yellow foods are good here - sweet corn, pineapple, peppers and spices turmeric and ginger can help to keep this chakra warm!

PLANETS It is not surprising that the Sun, whilst not a planet, is representative of the Manipura Chakra. Mars is also associated with this chakra. Named after the Roman God of war it is a powerful planet Whichever of the symbols you like the best use it to connect with your chakra. To work with gems place wear them in a necklace so the stone hangs by your solar plexus or lie down with the gem placed on your upper belly area.

SOUND

The chant or sound for the solar plexus is RAM.

SMELL

The incense linked here are typically fiery - ginger, saffron, musk, sandalwood and cinnamon .

METAL

The metal associated to the solar plexus chakra is Iron. Strength, power and resilience all echo here.

ANIMALS The animal representative of this chakra is even within the symbol of the chakra - a ram. This determined, powerful, agile animal perfectly sums up the energy of this chakra.
