2 Altogether better Durham Stanley Area Action Partnership

What is an Area Action Partnership?

Area Action Partnerships, or AAPs for short, are a way for you to get involved in the work of Durham County Council (DCC), Stanley Town Council, Karbon Homes, Health Service, Durham Police, the Fire & Rescue Service, local businesses and the Voluntary and Community Sector, placing you at the heart of local decision making.

There are 14 AAPs throughout and they work with you to identify and address your local issues and improve the area you live in, its services, its facilities and its appearance.

The Priorities for 2019/20 for Stanley AAP are: 4 Stronger Stanley – Children Young People & Families and Community Safety 4 Supporting Stanley – Older People and Health & Wellbeing 4 Successful Stanley – Employment, Enterprise and Training

If you would like to come along to our monthly task group meetings or just receive our monthly e-bulletin keeping you up to date with local news, please get in touch. See page 4 for contact details.

3 Stanley AAP covers the following towns and villages: , , Causey, Craghead, Clough Dene, East Kyo, East Stanley, Greencroft, , , Kip Hill, The Middles, New Kyo, Oxhill, , Shield Row, Sleepy Valley, , South Stanley, Stanley, Tanfield, , , West Kyo, and White-le-Head.

Stanley Area Action Partnership (AAP) is the community arm of Durham County Council, we work in partnership to give people in Stanley a greater choice and voice in local affairs. The partnership allows people to have a say on services, and give organisations the chance to speak directly with local communities. By working in partnership we help ensure that the services of a range of organisations - including the County and Town Council, Police, Fire, Health, and Voluntary organisations - are directed to meet the needs of local communities and focus their actions and spending on issues important to these local communities.

HANG UP ON FRAUD Older people are targeted ruthlessly by companies over the phone. Many of these are genuine companies trying to sell their products to new customers, but some are criminals who claim to be from a bank, Department for Work & Pensions, County Council or convince them they have a virus on their computer. These criminals aim to obtain personal information or bank details and money is taken from their accounts so quickly that victims have no time to protect themselves. The ‘Beat the Scammers’ project led by Age UK County Durham and supported by Stanley AAP, will prevent older people becoming victims of crime by working in partnership with local agencies to build sustainable resilience across Stanley and help people ‘Hang up on fraud’ with confidence. This includes installing call blockers in the homes of vulnerable older people in immediate need of help. Locally recruited volunteers will help vulnerable residents how to protect themselves from being a victim of scam calls, promote free services such as the Telephone and Mail Preference Services and raise awareness of how technology such as ‘call blockers’ work. For more information or to volunteer to help contact Age UK County Durham on 0191 374 6568 or email [email protected]

WHEELS TO WORK - Transport help to access employment A new scheme is helping people get established in their first six months of employment. Funded by Chester-le-Street and District AAP, Stanley AAP and Mid Durham AAP, with a £50,000 grant contribution from the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, Wheels to Work aims to ensure travelling is not a barrier for those starting in their new role or training. Hiring a moped If you’re 16 or over and have a provisional licence you can hire one of 36 mopeds. You then have the option to borrow either a 50cc moped for £25 a week or a 125cc for £30 a week. Discounts are available for apprentices, students, part-time and zero hours workers. The cost will cover Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), protective clothing, a heavy duty lock, insurance, breakdown cover, servicing and maintenance of the moped. After the loan period, and in partnership with the local Credit Union, there may be an option to buy the moped. Travelling options We recognised that often jobs exist but due to shift patterns and transport routes across County Durham it can be difficult to get to work for the time you need to start. If you are in the North Durham area then I would encourage you to get in touch to see if this scheme can be of benefit. We are looking forward to offering residents in the eligible areas of County Durham the chance to take up work or training opportunities where lack of transport has up to now been a barrier. Contact: Wheels to Work team on 0191 389 7153 or check out the website Wheels to Work for more information.
