“Identifiers of Success” SNM/SNMTS Grants, Awards & Scholarship Programs funded by the Education and Research Foundation for SNM (ERF) SNM Mission: To improve healthcare by advancing molecular imaging and therapy. ERF Mission: To advance excellence in healthcare through the support of education and research in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging by provision of grants and awards. Grants, Awards & Scholarship Programs Overview Over the past five years the support received from the ERF has enabled SNM to offer a multitude of grants, awards and scholarship programs that mutually benefit and support the missions of both organizations; over $1 million has been distributed in the form of grants, awards, scholarships and continuing education initiatives to physicians, researchers, technologists and technologist students. A detailed list of programs awarded since 2006, and their funding levels, can be found on page 4 of this report. Grants, Awards & Scholarship Programs Highlights Approximately 200 individuals have attended SNM Annual Meetings in order to present their molecular imaging abstracts through the travel assistance received through the SNM/SNMTS Travel & Student Travel Awards. Contributors to the field of nuclear medicine/molecular imaging have been publicly recognized at the SNM Annual Meetings by way of the Mark Tetalman Award & the SNMTS Outstanding Technologist & Educator Awards. Over 150 nuclear medicine technologist students demonstrating academic excellence and financial need have received assistance through the Paul Cole Scholarship and have completed/nearly completed their certificate program, associates or bachelors degrees. Nearly 20 technologists have enrolled in/completed high-level/continuing education through the SNMTS Bachelors Degree Completion, Advanced Practitioner and Clinical Advancement Scholarships. SNM Student Fellowship Awards have given many students in medical school the opportunity to incorporate nuclear medicine/molecular imaging research into their curriculums and have paved the way for many of these students to enter residency programs in nuclear medicine/molecular imaging. These awards have also encouraged collaboration among various departments within institutions. Researchers who have received Seed/Pilot Research Grants have proceeded to extend their seed/pilot projects and have used their research results in applications for continuing grant funding to organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institutes (NCI). Resulting research abstracts have been presented at various SNM Annual Meetings and manuscripts have been published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Cancer Biotherapy and radiopharmaceuticals. The molecular imaging focused awards introduced in 2008 (Molecular Imaging Research Grant for Junior Medical Faculty, Postdoctoral & Predoctoral Molecular Imaging Scholar Programs) have been considered “the highest academic recognition [that I have] ever earned” and have positively impacted the transition of fellows towards further career advancement. At the time of final report submission recipients reported: o Placement as an Investigator I in the department of Molecular Imaging at the Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research. o Various patents/patent applications. o Abstract presentations (both oral and poster) and Travel Awards to attend various international conferences such as the SNM Annual Meeting, World Molecular Imaging Congress Annual Meeting, and the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers’ Nuclear Science Symposium & Molecular Imaging Conference. o Publications in media such as the Journal of Nuclear Medicine, Molecular Imaging, Cancer Research Journal, Protein Engineering Design and Selection, Physics in Medicine and Biology, and the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science. Grant Reporting Guidelines The following guidelines are distributed to all research grant recipients prior to their acceptance of an ERF-funded research grant: SNM Research Grant Report Guidelines Research grant recipients must: Provide the SNM Awards Committee with an interim report six months after the start of the project in the case of a one-year award. Two-year awards must submit the interim report one year after the start of the project. Provide the SNM Awards Committee a final report within 6-8 weeks after project completion, depending on requirements stated in the information accompanying the application. Report Requirements Interim and Final Reports Interim report—3 pp. maximum. Final report—10 pages maximum. Summary statement not to exceed one page—one half page preferred. Restate goal. Restate specific aims and the results of your work toward each aim. Include relevant supporting data. Identify and justify any deviations from the original plan. Summarize expenditures. Explain the problems you have encountered and how they impacted the plan. Additional Requirements for the Final Report Identify any of the original goals you did not reach and explain why. Indicate the future clinical significance from the results of your research. Indicate if the results from your research will o Be submitted for publication. o Be used as preliminary data in a grant application to another granting agency. In the final report, we also urge you to Tell us if the grant helped influence your career and/or its future Suggest how to improve the grant program The SNM is able to provide research grant support because of generous support from individual donors and the generosity of the Education and Research Foundation for SNM. To provide feedback on the impact of our grant programs to our donors, we may ask you to participate in a future survey to track your career advancements, publications, and future grant support. The remainder of this report contains a compilation of the research grant reports that have been collected since 2006. In addition to the research grant reports received a tool that would prove useful to both SNM & ERF is a survey to previous grant/award/scholarship recipients. Potential survey questions can be found on the following page. Example: Grant, Award, & Scholarship Recipient Survey/Questionnaire General Information 1. Name: 2. Email: 3. Phone: 4.
