Apart from these major ethnic groups, there are about 371 (three hundred and seventy-one) other ethnic groups with diverse languages and phonological structures, which are some time noticeable even within the same socio cultural setting. Majority of these ethnic groups share a lot of historical and deep cultural relationship between them as evidence mostly in the application of customary law that regulate their private life on one hand and the relationship that exist between them on the other hand. Apart from these rules of customary law, the common law and statutory law equally plays a major role in the regulation of these relationships. Some time these rules of customary law are subjected to certain test as prescribed by the common law and the statute in other to determine their validity and applicability. These regulatory mechanisms, also apply to the people that constitute Esan ethnic group. They presently occupy Edo Central Senatorial District consisting of five local government areas in Edo State of Nigeria. Historically they share cultural relationship with the Edos in the area of customary law, however with some noticeable differences in its application in certain areas. One of such area is succession.

Against this premise, the paper identifies the broad challenges besetting teacher education industry, the colleges of education, in Nigeria: especially funding, which impacts on infrastructure; curriculum matters; constitutional and policy matters; as well as administrative and managerial imprudence. The paper recommended some redress strategies which, inter alia, include: the need for huge investment in teacher education through the increase government funding; establishment of endowment funds for teachers; harmonization of conditions of service for teachers across all levels of the teaching profession; and complete overhaul of the regulatory agencies – especially a merger of both NCCE and NTI – to make them a more robust body and in tune with the reality of teacher education.     Editorial Two of the main articles in this issue, those by Clough and Vaughan, present material from case studies in northern Nigeria and southern Malawi. Case studies such as these are able to explore the complex ramifications of rural social and economic relations and to question the abstract generalisations regarding middlemen, households and gender relations advanced by studies with a more macro-societal focus. 'Peasant' studies have tended to base their analyses on the 'household', conceived as a unit of production and consumption. Clough and Vaughan show the importance of situating the study of agricultural production in the context of exchange relations and of examining the changing relations of household members, female and male, to others within and without the households (natal and marital) to which they are affiliated. The articles by Williams and Clough are concerned with crop marketing in Nigeria. The internal food markets, studied by Clough, have largely been developed by African traders. The markets for the main export crops, considered by Williams, were dominated by European firms and, since the second world war, by state marketing boards. Williams locates the origins of marketing boards in the crises of colonial political economy in the 1930s and the need to shore up the British economy in the 1940s. He emphasises that their original justification was to regulate the internal marketing of export crops to defend 'peasants' from 'middlemen'. The result has been to create an instrument for taxing peasants, leading to the collapse of agricultural exports and conferring privileged access to funds and trading opportunities to clients of governments and of governing parties.

Thus far the only people who have been attested with a high level of research to be the descendants of the ancient Mesopotamians are the Assyrian Christians of Iraq and its surrounding areas. Assyria continued to exist as a geo political entity until the Arab-Islamic conquest in the mid 7th century AD, and Assyrian identity, personal names and evolutions of Mesopotamian Aramaic (which still contain many Akkadian loan words) have survived among the Assyrian people from ancient times to this day. (see Assyrian people). However, there have been many claims of ancient mid eastern ancestry (including Assyrian) throughout Europe, Africa (Afrocentric) and even the Americas, none of which have been supported by mainstream opinion or strong evidence, let alone proof. The most long standing and popularised theory has been the attempts to link Assyrian ancestry to the ancient Germans. The Assyria-Germany connection has an early precedent in Jerome, who compared the Germanic invaders of his day to the threats to the Kingdom of Israel described in the Bible, quoting Psalms 83:8, "Assur also is joined with them":[30] The whole country between the Alps and the Pyrenees, between the Rhine and the Ocean, has been laid waste by hordes of Quadi, Vandals, Sarmatians, Alans, Gepids, Herules, Saxons, Burgundians, Allemanni and—alas! for the commonweal!—even Pannonians.
