This biodiversity provides a wide range of ecological, economic, social, and cultural services, which have sustained human society in the region over thousands of years and contribute to economic development. Since biodiversity recognizes no national borders, international cooperation is increasingly important for addressing the common challenges in nature understanding and conservation. The aim of the conference initiated by the Federal Scientific Center on the East Asia Terrestrial Biodiversity of FEB RAS (RUSSIA) and Engineering Research Center of Chinese Ministry of Education for Edible and Medicinal Fungi (Jilin Agricultural University, CHINA) was to share knowledge and experiences in the broad field of the North East Asia biodiversity among scientists in a interdisciplinary manner, create networks among specialists and institutions all over the world in order to improve our understanding of regional biodiversity, integrate research outputs into conservation projects and sustainable technologies, to identify further research needs and perspectives. Russia and China were among the first countries which have embodied the idea of transboundary reserves for migrating birds and for big cats. We expect that the regular meeting in the form of such conference will produce a fruitful opportunity to create new international teams and areas to study global and transboundary aspects of biodiversity, to create the mitigation strategies for reducing the unpleasant consequences of climate change, and even to establish the joint enterprises with new technologies for land use, flood and erosion control as well as for conservation of rare and endangered species. We give detailed synonymies and published records for all taxonomic hierarchies, as well as hosts, type localities and repositories of type material; we highlight significant references and include comments on the current taxonomic status of the species. We provide a summary of present knowledge of the biology and ecology for eight species. Also, we give a host-louse list, and a bibliography to the family as complete as possible. All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup­ plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. POELT *) Mit 3 Abbildungen Die Familie Candelariaceae ist erst im Jahre 1954: 11 durch HAKXTLINEN gültig beschrieben worden, obwohl die Ähnlichkeiten der beiden bis 1944 bekannt gewordenen Gattungen Candelaria und Candelariella schon älteren Autoren aufgefallen waren und zudem in den Gattungsnamen zum Ausdruck kommen. Ihre Verwandtschaft ergibt sich aus vielen Übereinstimmungen in Chemismus, Bau von Hyphen, Pykniden und Apothecien, in Ascus-Struktur, Sporenformen und Sporenzahlen. Ihre Unterschiede liegen in der Organi- sationsstufe: Candelaria ist eine mit deutlichen Rhizinen versehene Laub- flechte, die im meist verwandten System von ZAHLBRITCKNER 1926: 231 bei den Parmeliaceae untergebracht wurde, während die Krustenfiechten- gattung Candelariella entsprechend bei den krustigen Lecanoraceae ein- gereiht wurde. HAKTTLINEN loc. cit. bereicherte die Familie um die erst 1941: 29 bzw. 1944: 29 von RÄSÄ'NEN beschriebene Gattung Placomaronea, die eine besondere Lebensform, die der Nabelflechten, vertritt. Einige bei HAKTJLINEN loc. cit. nicht behandelte und einige inzwischen neu aufgefundene Typen geben Anlaß, auf die Gattungsgliederung der Familie erneut einzugehen.     Chapter 1: Introduction In Ecological and Biological Diversity of National Forests in Region 3 Bruce Vander Lee, Ruth Smith, and Joanna Bate The Nature Conservancy EXECUTIVE SUMMARY We summarized existing regional-scale biological and ecological assessment information from Arizona and New Mexico for use in the development of Forest Plans for the eleven National Forests in USDA Forest Service Region 3 (Region 3). Under the current Planning Rule, Forest Plans are to be strategic documents focusing on ecological, economic, and social sustainability. In addition, Region 3 has identified restoration of the functionality of fire-adapted systems as a central priority to address forest health issues. Assessments were selected for inclusion in this report based on (1) relevance to Forest Planning needs with emphasis on the need to address ecosystem diversity and ecological sustainability, (2) suitability to address restoration of Region 3’s major vegetation systems, and (3) suitability to address ecological conditions at regional scales. We identified five assessments that addressed the distribution and current condition of ecological and biological diversity within Region 3. We summarized each of these assessments to highlight important ecological resources that exist on National Forests in Arizona and New Mexico: • Extent and distribution of potential natural vegetation types in Arizona and New Mexico • Distribution and condition of low-elevation grasslands in Arizona • Distribution of stream reaches with native fish occurrences in Arizona • Species richness and conservation status attributes for all species on National Forests in Arizona and New Mexico • Identification of priority areas for biodiversity conservation from Ecoregional Assessments from Arizona and New Mexico Analyses of available assessments were completed across all management jurisdictions for Arizona and New Mexico, providing a regional context to illustrate the biological and ecological importance of National Forests in Region 3.
