    Norge och Sverige gjorde olika vägval efter andra världskriget och ockupationen Andra världskriget och ockupationen 1940 splittrade Sverige och Norge. På grund av externa krafter tog de ställning för och emot neutralitet. Men efterhand blev det trots allt mycket som förenade broderländerna. Nordens gemensamma neutralitetspolitik manifesterades vid ett statschefsmöte i Stockholm 18-19 oktober 1939. Avsikten var att demonstrera stöd för Finland som var under hårt tryck från sin mäktiga granne Sovjetunionen att överge neutralitetslinjen. Ett drygt halvår senare – efter vinterkriget och Nazi-Tysklands ockupation av Danmark och Norge – var Nordens geopolitiska landskap upprivet. En betraktelse över svensk-norska förbindelser under världskriget och den tyska ockupationen kan med fördel utgå från just detta toppmöte. Det var den sista nordiska demonstrationen av neutralitet som strategi för överlevnad i en värld där krigsmolnen hopade sig allt närmare dessa småstater i Europas norra utkanter. Under vintern och våren 1939-40 följde en mycket omvälvande och turbulent period i Norden. Regionens ledare upplevde med rätta den ryska stormakten som ett allvarligt hot men var ännu inte fullt införstådda med konsekvenserna av den pakt som Hitler och Stalin ingått som upptakt till de båda diktatorernas uppdelning av Polen sinsemellan. I skydd av denna så kallade icke-angreppspakt kunde Sovjet angripa Finland och Tyskland kunde rusta för överfall på Danmark och Norge. Europas fokus på nordligaste Norden Europeiska ledare var under denna korta period som aldrig förr fokuserade på Nordens nordligaste geografi. Frankrike och Storbritannien, som efter den tyska invasionen av Polen förklarat Tyskland krig, såg en möjlighet att förvandla regionen till ett slagfält fjärran från egna territorier.
