WACCAMAW AREA AGENCY ON AGING
As individuals age, changes take place that affect both the mind and body. Tasks once easily completed may become increasingly difficult and require assistance. Family members may find themselves placed in a caregiving role.
As the dedicated Area Agency on Aging (AAA), Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments exists to provide services and resources to seniors and their caregivers in the Waccamaw Region. The AAA offers the support many senior residents need to continue living comfortable, high-quality lives in their own homes for as long as possible.
WRCOG also serves as the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) for the region. The ADRC works to improve awareness of and access to resources and services for seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers.
Services include:
● The Family Caregiver Assistance program, which provides support, information, education and small grants to family caregivers.
● The Insurance Counseling and Referral for Elders (ICARE) program, which provides health insurance counseling for those participating in Medicare, assists with Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage and Medicaid Savings Programs, and helps with coordination of benefits and general insurance information.
● The Information, Referral and Assistance (IR&A) program, which creates connections between community services and those in need of assistance, provides outreach and advocacy and helps guide clients through the aging process.
● The Long-Term Care Ombudsman program seeks to improve the quality of life and care of those residing in nursing homes and assisted living facilities by educating facility staff and community members, investigating complaints, visiting facilities and monitoring conditions.
● The agency works with providers to deliver services such as congregate dining programs, home-delivered meal programs, transportation and homemaking programs. Our providers are:

Part of a larger, nationwide network dedicated to improving the lives of senior citizens and disabled individuals, this arm of Waccamaw Regional offers a range of services to assist seniors, persons with disabilities and their families as they navigate ever-changing programming and service options, and effectively coordinate resources that allow clients to be engaged in their communities and live the highest quality of life possible.

4 ADULT DAY CARE CENTERS
A facility for the supervised care of older adults, providing activities such as meals and socialization, one or more days a week during specified daytime hours. The participants, primarily persons with physical and/or mental limitations who need socialization, physical assistance, and/or psychological assistance, return to their homes each evening. The program is often used as respite by family members caring for an older person who cannot be left alone safely at home.

5 ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES
Adult Protective Services (APS) are social services provided to abused, neglected, or exploited older and/or disabled adults. Elderly and disabled adults who are 18 years of age or older and are victims of actual or potential abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Adult Protective Services will be provided after an assessment has been completed and reveals that the vulnerable adult is unable to provide for his/her own care and protections, and has been or is a potential for abuse, neglect, or exploitation. The person or mandated reporter who has actual knowledge of the abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a vulnerable adult must report the incident where the individual lives to make a referral.

18 HOME CARE SERVICES NON-MEDICAL Non-medical in-home care services are provided to individuals who have non-medical personal needs and require assistance with activities of daily living (ADLS). ADLS include bathing, dressing, walking, transferring up and down, toileting, personal grooming, meal preparation, light housekeeping, shopping, medication management (assist with self-administration), laundry, and in many cases transportation. Respite services are also provided to allow family caregivers a brief rest from their caregiving role. Home care services do not require skilled or medically trained personnel to perform and all are required to be licensed by the State of South Carolina (www.scdhec.gov).

Hospice services are provided to individuals living with a life-threatening illness and focuses on comfort and support rather than the cure of the illness. Hospice services include nursing and home health aide visits, necessary medical equipment and medications related to the life threatening illness. Hospice nurses, home health aides, social workers, clergy and trained volunteers work as a team under the direction of the patient’s physician to provide physical, spiritual, and emotional support. Hospice may be provided in a patient’s home, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Anyone - friends, family, clergy, as well as the patient’s physician may refer an individual to hospice care. Hospice services are reimbursed by most insurance including Medicare and medicaid.
